Ministry asks JNU V-C why she skipped meet, views it ‘seriously'
In a letter sent to Pandit this week, a senior official of the Department of Higher Education noted that she had skipped both days of the conference 'without formal approval', despite being 'formally invited well in advance'. Saying that her absence was being 'viewed seriously', the letter said her 'valuable contributions to deliberations on various themes were missed.'
The Vice-Chancellors' Conference was held in Kevadia, Gujarat, on July 10-11. It was attended by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Vice-Chancellors of Central Universities, officials from the Ministry of Education, the University Grants Commission, and other academicians.
JNU hosted its own three-day conference on Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) from July 10 to 12 — inaugurated by former Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar. However, the letter noted that the scheduling overlap had been taken into account and the ministry expected Pandit to attend at least on the second day.
'While acknowledging that this conference coincided with the conference on IKS at JNU, it was expected that you would join the Vice-Chancellors' Conference on the second day (11th July 2025), following the inaugural event at your university,' the letter said, and asked Pandit to apprise the ministry of the reasons for her absence.
The Indian Express did not receive any response to calls, messages and emails sent to the V-C and the media relations officer. Higher Education Secretary Vineet Joshi declined to comment on the matter. However, a senior official in the ministry confirmed that the JNU V-C was the only institutional head to whom such a communication was sent, as she was the only one absent from the conference.
'She should have gone for both things — both were important. People could have benefitted from her presence at the Vice-Chancellors' conference,' the official said.
'When people get together, it's an opportunity to exchange ideas. This sort of communication is just to remind somebody that if one is in some position, it is not just about doing well in that position. So much money was being spent, so many people were coming for this conference, and time was spent learning from each other… this was a reminder that this is important,' the official said.
According to the official, such communications have been sent in the past to absentees to 'sensitise' them.
The two-day conference focused on Central Universities as 'drivers of educational transformation' and their contribution to Viksit Bharat @2047, as well as on 'critical themes in higher education policy, institutional governance, research and innovation, and national development priorities,' according to a Press Information Bureau statement.
The discussions at the conference aimed to assess 'how the Central Universities are aligned with the policy's next-phase goals', 'foster dialogue among academic leaders on institutional innovations, enabling environments and shared challenges,' and 'prepare institutions for upcoming policy milestones, regulatory transitions, and the global academic landscape of 2047.'

Neglecting Tagore's Legacy: Students Protest To Demand Campus For Bangladesh's Rabindra University
Last Updated: Students and teachers at Rabindra University have been taking classes on the Dhaka-Pabna National Highway, leading to trouble for commuters The legacy of Rabindranath Tagore, the Nobel laureate who composed Bangladesh's national song, is under fresh scrutiny after miscreants recently vandalised his ancestral house in Sirajganj. Adding to the growing concern is the plight of Bangladesh's Rabindra University, an institution named in the Nobel laureate's honour, which still lacks a permanent campus after its inception. Students and teachers at Rabindra University have taken to the streets since July 26, staging a continuous protest on the Dhaka-Pabna National Highway. They are demanding immediate construction of a permanent campus—a promise long overdue. Demonstrations include symbolic classroom sessions on the highway, human chains, and road blockades, causing major disruptions to commuters. The university, established during then prime minister Sheikh Hasina's tenure, officially began its academic activities in the 2017–2018 session. Although 100 acres of land were allocated in Shirajgunj and a Rs 519 crore project has been approved by the Ministry of Education, the project still awaits final approval from ECNEC (Executive Committee of the National Economic Council). Protesters, including faculty members, students, and local citizens, claim the delay is due to a negative environmental report submitted by Environment and Forest Affairs Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan. During a recent highway protest, students chanted slogans demanding her resignation, alleging that her report has stalled the project without justified reason. 'This university is in the name of the great Rabindranath Tagore, who gave us our national song, yet we are being denied a permanent campus," said Zakaria, a first-year PG Sociology student, speaking to News18. 'We have been protesting for the last three months. We are bleeding from our hearts because we cannot even properly respect Tagore. We will go for bigger protests if ECNEC doesn't act." As part of the protest, university teachers held symbolic classes on the highway, where students attentively attended 12 classes across five departments. The powerful and poignant act was meant to highlight the poor academic conditions students are currently facing in rented facilities. Currently, the university operates out of two rented buildings—Shirajpur Mohila College and Saifuddin Yahia Degree College—with over 1,200 students, 34 teachers, 54 officers, and 107 staff. Lacking hostels, a proper campus, and basic infrastructure, the university falls far short of standard higher education expectations. 'We don't know what's in the environmental report, but the way this project is being neglected is unacceptable," said Nazrul, the university's Proctor. 'This is not about politics—it's about our fundamental right to education and respect for Tagore's legacy." Protesters have vowed to continue their movement until the Development Project Proposal (DPP) is fully approved and construction begins. According to organisers, highway blockades will continue until at least August 10 and may escalate further if their demands are not met. CM Sai calls on PM Modi, extends invitation for Chhattisgarh's silver jubilee celebrations
New Delhi: In a significant engagement at Parliament House on Friday, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, extending a formal invitation to grace the upcoming 'Amrit Rajat Mahotsav' in Raipur on November 1. The event marks the 25th anniversary of Chhattisgarh's formation and is being celebrated as the Silver Jubilee Year. During the meeting, Chief Minister Sai briefed Prime Minister Modi on the state's developmental roadmap, highlighting key priorities and public welfare initiatives. He emphasised that the Prime Minister's presence would lend historic gravitas to the celebrations and serve as a source of inspiration for the people of Chhattisgarh. CM Sai also presented the state's long-term strategic blueprint - Anjor Vision @ 2047 - which outlines Chhattisgarh's roadmap toward sustainable growth in alignment with the national goal of a developed India. The document proposes sectoral reforms across education, healthcare, agriculture, industry, innovation, and environmental sustainability. Drawing from the Centre's Jan Vishwas Act 2023, the Chief Minister informed the Prime Minister about the passage of Chhattisgarh's own Jan Vishwas Bill 2025, aimed at enhancing transparency and accessibility in the justice system. Urban development featured prominently in the discussion, with CM Sai detailing the formation of the Chhattisgarh State Capital Region Development Authority (SCRDA). This body is tasked with transforming 'Nava Raipur' (new Raipur) into a smart, modern urban hub through planned infrastructure and governance. On the economic front, the Chief Minister reported robust momentum in industrial investment and job creation, catalysed by the state's Industrial Policy 2024-30. He noted that the policy's single-window clearance system and targeted incentives, especially for enterprises employing over 1,000 workers, have significantly boosted investor confidence. Between November 2024 and July 2025, Chhattisgarh received investment proposals worth Rs 6.65 lakh crore from 84 companies. Among the marquee developments is the foundation of India's first semiconductor unit in Nava Raipur, alongside the launch of construction for an AI data centre. The state is also prioritising sectors such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, ready-made garments, and IT services to position itself as a technological and industrial powerhouse. Turning to education, CM Sai underscored efforts to rationalise schools and deploy trained teachers in tribal and remote regions. The integration of digital tools is central to the state's push for equitable and effective learning outcomes. Two flagship projects - Medicity and Edu City - are underway to bolster healthcare and education infrastructure. The Medicity in Raipur is envisioned as a cutting-edge medical hub, expected to generate substantial employment and elevate Chhattisgarh's profile in the health sector. The Chief Minister also briefed Prime Minister Modi on rehabilitation and confidence-building measures in the Maoist-affected areas. He credited the state's sensitive and forward-looking policies for encouraging large-scale surrenders and reintegration of former Maoists.
