We Were Liars Season 2: Release date speculation, cast and plot details – Everything we know so far

Business Upturn2 days ago
If you're still trying to emotionally recover from that We Were Liars Season 1 finale on Prime Video, you're not alone. Based on E. Lockhart's bestselling YA novel, the show had us hooked from the start—with its sun-drenched mystery, twisted family secrets, and that jaw-dropping twist. And now that all eight episodes have dropped, fans are asking the big question: Are we getting a Season 2?
Let's break down everything we know (and what we're hoping for) about a potential second season—casting clues, release date buzz, and where the story could go next. Is 'We Were Liars' Season 2 Happening?
As of June 2025, Prime Video hasn't officially renewed the series yet. But don't freak out just yet—things are looking pretty promising. The show shot straight to No. 1 on the platform after it premiered on June 18, and the creators are definitely interested in doing more.
Showrunners Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie have said they've had 'endless conversations' with Prime Video about continuing the story. In an interview, Plec mentioned they're just waiting on viewership numbers to roll in before getting that green light. 'We're looking forward to the data working in our favor,' she teased. When Could We Were Liars Season 2 Arrive?
Assuming Prime Video gives the go-ahead soon, a new season probably wouldn't drop until late 2026 or early 2027. Here's why: Season 1 started filming in June 2024 and premiered a year later. So if Season 2 starts production by mid-2026, we're looking at a similar release window. We Were Liars' Season 2 Expected Cast
That totally depends on where the story goes. But here's what we can say based on that emotional finale.
In Season 1, we followed Cadence Sinclair Eastman (played by Emily Alyn Lind ) as she unraveled the dark truth behind a fire that killed her cousins and boyfriend during one tragic summer on Beechwood Island. In the end, we learned she'd been seeing ghosts the whole time—Johnny, Mirren, and Gat were long gone, and Cadence had blocked out the truth.
But then came the twist: Carrie (Cadence's aunt, played by Mamie Gummer ) also sees Johnny's ghost. That tiny moment totally changes the game—and hints at a Season 2 that dives into Carrie's story, addiction, and grief.
So, we could definitely see Mamie Gummer and Joseph Zada (Johnny) return in a big way. Even though Johnny's dead, his ghost might be sticking around for more emotional haunting.
Also likely to return: Emily Alyn Lind as Cadence, Caitlin FitzGerald as Penny, Candice King as Bess, and possibly Rahul Kohli, David Morse, and others—depending on flashbacks or timelines.
That said, if Season 2 follows Lockhart's prequel novel Family of Liars (more on that in a sec), we may get an entirely new cast playing younger versions of the Sinclair sisters back in the 1980s. We Were Liars' Season 2 Potential Plot
Season 1 covered the whole We Were Liars novel, following Cadence as she unraveled the truth about the fire. That final scene with Carrie and Johnny's ghost pulls straight from Family of Liars , so Season 2 seems poised to dive into that prequel. Set in 1987, it's Carrie's turn to spill her secrets, telling Johnny's ghost about a summer that shaped the Sinclair sisters' lives. Think family dysfunction, a mysterious death (their little sister Rosemary's drowning), and plenty of those dark, beachy vibes we love.
But don't count out Cadence's story. Emily Alyn Lind hinted to Variety that Cadence's baggage doesn't just vanish, and her grandfather's threat to expose her could loom large. Plec called Family of Liars the 'Sinclair sister villain origin story' in Swoon , but they might weave in present-day drama too. There's also We Fell Apart , a new Lockhart novel out November 4, 2025, with new characters in the same Gothic world. It's not a direct sequel, but it could inspire some fresh twists. And are those ghosts real or just in their heads? The showrunners are keeping us guessing, which only makes me more excited.

Amazon is shutting down its Freevee app in August

Amazon plans to shut down its standalone Freevee app in August, according to an in-app notice to users. The free, ad-supported streaming service is directing viewers to continue watching Freevee content on Prime Video. 'Prime Video is the new exclusive home for Freevee Tv show, movies, and Live TV,' the notice to readers states. 'The Freevee app will be accessible until August 2025. Continue watching your favorite Free Originals and our library of hit movies, shows, and live TV on Prime Video for free, no subscription needed. Download Prime Video to get started and sign-in with your Amazon account.' The move doesn't come as a surprise, as Amazon confirmed back in November 2024 that it was sunsetting the service and integrating its content into Prime Video. Amazon said in a statement at the time that it had 'decided to phase out Freevee branding. There will be no change to the content available for Prime members, and a vast offering of free streaming content will still be accessible for non-Prime members, including select Originals from Amazon MGM Studios, a variety of licensed movies and series, and a broad library of FAST Channels — all available on Prime Video.' Image Credits:TechCrunch/Screenshot Amazon's decision to shut down the service likely reflects a strategic move to simplify its offerings and centralize content on a single platform. Instead of operating two separate services, the company is consolidating its streaming efforts around Prime Video. Launched in 2019, Freevee is available in the United States, United Kingdon, Germany, and Austria. The service was initially called 'IMDb TV' and later rebranded to Freevee in 2022. Popular original series on Freevee include Emmy-nominated reality comedy show 'Jury Duty,' crime show 'Bosch: Legacy,' soap opera 'Neighbours,' and more. These shows are accessible on Prime Video under the 'Watch for Free' section. Techcrunch event Save $450 on your TechCrunch All Stage pass Build smarter. Scale faster. Connect deeper. Can ‘The Bear' Avoid Eating Itself Alive in Season 5?

Former Chicago wonder chef Lane Regan brought a unique forager's perspective to the city with their Michelin-starred restaurant, Elizabeth. Regan held a certain affinity for bear, serving the animal in a variety of ways to anxious diners who perhaps expected A5 wagyu on their plates instead. Dining at Regan's restaurant and underground dinners was the second thing I thought of when FX announced, in a mild upset, that The Bear would return for Season 5. We won't make the mistake of labeling this season as a finale. The network surprised us by renewing the show less than a week after Season 4 — strongly suspected to be the last season — dropped. Diabolical! Beyond game meat, the first thing that Season 5 of The Bear triggered was a throwaway joke from 1987's Spaceballs , the Mel Brooks parody of Star Wars . The gag proposed a fictional sequel, Spaceballs II: The Search for More Money . Though it's a dated reference, the gag still resonates with current moviegoers plagued by soulless superhero sequel syndrome, the kind of flicks that were green-lit without a story in place but with plenty of marketing and merchandising potential. In other news, they're actually making a Spaceballs II . For The Bear , Season 4's finale provides Jeremy Allen-White an escape route where he can leave the show without worrying about figuring out how to relive the glory days of Seasons 1 and 2. Contractual obligations with the cast didn't make Season 5 a given, but they're going to give it a go even though Season 4 meandered with an uncertainty that suggested the writers and cast also didn't know the series' fate. Without White's pretty blue eyes, there's more room for the rest of the ensemble to shine, and that was telegraphed in Season 4 when Marcus (Lionel Boyce) was listed in Food & Wine's Best New Chefs. Pastry chefs rarely take leadership roles at restaurants, and there aren't many Black men baking cakes at restaurants. Elevating a likable character like Marcus would give Season 5 the extra zest the show badly needs. Television sometimes needs to take care of viewers, akin to how restaurants take care of diners. Assuming White's role will be reduced, Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) is also poised for a breakout. Carmy realized he was not only getting in his own way, but also in Syd's. The Bear has been a nostalgia-fueled running of the restaurant gauntlet without the realization of how the industry has changed. The first four seasons we've been treated to countless montages revealing Carmy's tortured soul as he's been victimized by being a Berzatto. Just like Carmy, viewers are burned out in attempting to summon empathy. Those Calvin Klein ads only bought so much goodwill. It's time for Syd to step up and for Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) to see her potential and appreciate greatness. Carmy's journey of self-realization feels like it mirrors the show's evolution. Even in a world where we're told to 'shut up and dribble,' one where more customers feel that restaurants should only focus on the food without attaching a backstory or pulling on the strings of ethical consumption, The Bear appears on the cusp of finally making a point. It's so close . Elizabeth closed in 2022 after Regan left Chicago in 2019 to open the Milkweed Inn, a bed and breakfast about 400 miles from Chicago, deep within the Hiawatha National Forest. It's the kind of serenity that would appeal to Carmy. With four seasons under its belt, it's unclear what The Bear wants to offer something more than a melange of catch phrases mixed with tributes to Chicago. The most optimistic fan will invest in Season 5, pinning hopes that this is the season where nuance gives way to substance. Perhaps it will reveal a meaningful critique of the industry or a continuation of the non-stop kinetic energy of the first two seasons — television that struck all the right chords of the emotional spectrum. But given the downward spiral Seasons 3 and 4 took, expectations have once more shifted. Maybe Carmy can take us with him to whatever shelter he finds to escape in Season 5. See More:
