Emotional tribute to 'Johnny Hockey' as Meredith Gaudreau announces Blue Jackets' 1st-round picks

Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — Meredith Gaudreau announced the Columbus Blue Jackets' first-round picks in the NHL draft Friday night, 10 months after her husband, John, was killed along with his brother while riding bicycles on the eve of their sister's wedding. Fans at the Peacock Theater chanted 'Johnny! Johnny!' in honor of the late player nicknamed 'Johnny Hockey' and cheered Meredith as she spoke. 'I just wanted to take this time to thank every single team and every single fan base for your support for my family this past season,' Gaudreau said. 'It's truly an honor to be here, and from the bottom of my heart, I thank you.' Gaudreau then said the Blue Jackets with the 14th pick were taking Jackson Smith, who later called it a surreal experience. Smith on a video call with reporters added he was grateful to be part of the poignant scene. "It was incredible," Smith said. 'Just to see the support in the stands, in the crowd, for the Gaudreau family, it was an incredible moment, so to be picked right after that felt even extra special for me.' Gaudreau returned not too long after to announce Russian goaltender Pyotr Andreyanov was the team's choice at No. 20. ___ AP NHL:

Days of Our Lives June 25: If Johnny Didn't Shoot EJ, Who Did?

Sigh. Here we are, still not knowing who shot EJ. In the Wednesday, June 25 episode of Days of Our Lives, Johnny finally told his story. Johnny (Carson Boatman) told Roman (Josh Taylor) and Marlena (Deidre Hall) that his anger had him seeing red, and parts of the night someone shot EJ (Dan Feuerriegel) were hazy to him. He knows he took the gun from Roman's lockbox and headed to the DiMera mansion. He remembered seeing his dad and being so angry, and pointing the gun at him. And then EJ turned around and asked him what he was doing. He said he never meant to hurt me. And that he didn't mmean for me to have to pay for all the horrible mistkaes that he made. But that the damage was already done. So all that was left was for him to stop me from making the same mistakes that he did. EJ then asked Johnny to give him the gun, and he did. And yet somehow, that gun — Roman's gun — ended up in the planter outside the mansion. So, someone else came in and used that gun to shoot EJ because one bullet is missing, according to Roman. Those were profound and self-aware words from EJ. Yet, ever since that night, Johnny has directed an explosive anger at his dad. He's only now coming out of it, and that must be why he's finally able to tell his story. READ THIS: Here's what's coming up next on DAYS. So, who do we direct our suspicions at now? The show has run through a million different potential culprits. Johnny seemed like too obvious a choice, and we're happy that he wasn't able to pull the trigger. After all, we need Johnny and Chanel (Raven Bowens) to be a happy couple for a while. Maybe we take a look at young Rachel (Alice Halsey), who's clearly suffering in the wake of so many things going wrong in her life. Her stomach issues may indicate a bigger problem. This could be a physical manifestation of a psychological MOAS — Mother Of All Secrets. That Rachel was the one to shoot EJ. It feels like she's one of the only suspects left. That or somehow Adult Rachel (Roslyn Gentle) or Arnold (Galen Gering) somehow did it. Whoever shot EJ, can we all band together and pray that they wrap this mystery up sooner rather than later? READ THIS: What you need to know about the Jensen Ackles (ex-Eric Brady, DAYS) Action Series, Countdown. LOVED Brady (Eric Martsolf) bringing up going to a Cubs game with Philip (John-Paul Lavoisier) when he gets out of the hospital. Loved even more how Philip specified wanting to go to a Chicago Cubs / St. Louis Cardinals game. While this DAYS episode was filmed eight to ten months ago during the 2024 baseball season, what a coincidence that on the day this episode aired, the Cubs are in the midst of a four-game series with the Cardinals in St. Louis. READ THIS: Love is Love in the Afternoon: Here's which soap won Pride Month. It's kind of crazy that Xander (Paul Telfer) wouldn't be happy with a co-parenting situation with Sarah (Linsey Godfrey). Why he thinks he should have full custody of Victoria is unbelievable. Does he equate Sarah lying to him with everything that he's done? Please do not let this be a Brady/Kristen (Stacy Haiduk) situation where the judge didn't take any of Kristen's past crimes into consideration, and she got full custody of Rachel. Because everybody knows what Xander's done to Sarah and many others in town. That's the only way other than bribery that Xander could get full custody. What are your thoughts on Wednesday's DAYS? Let us know in the comments.

‘We Were Liars' series review: No one cares what you did last summer

However many synonyms one finds for dreadful, they will not be enough to describe this lazy adaptation of E. Lockhart's 2014 YA psychological thriller. The characters are largely unlikeable, and things do not go well for the only loveable ones — Frances and Eleanor, the sweet, goofy golden retrievers. The Sinclairs are an obscenely rich family who always summer at Beechwood, their private island. Cadence (Emily Alyn Lind) is the eldest Sinclair grandchild. She remembers the Beechwood summers as being a time of fun and games with her cousins, Mirrin (Esther McGregor) and Johnny (Joseph Zada), and Gat (Shubham Maheshwari), the little Indian boy who Cadence found in the boathouse and who is then absorbed into the Sinclair fold. Harris (David Morse) is the Sinclair patriarch who believes strongly in 'the Sinclair way.' His three daughters — Penny (Caitlin FitzGerald), Cadence's mum; Carrie (Mamie Gummer), Johnny's mother; and Bess (Candice King), Mirrin's mum,— have disappointed him. Cadence names the summers by her age. While summers until she turns 16 are golden, Summer 16 goes wrong, and Cadence finds herself washed ashore on the beach with no memory of what happened. In Summer 17, Cadence returns to Beechwood to find things changed and no one willing to tell her what happened the previous summer. The island-in-the-sun setting combined with a benevolent tyrant and a death does not make for an Agatha Christie-style whodunnit. We Were Liars plods along ponderously, ambushed by stereotypes at every corner. Colonialism, racism, privilege, 'outrage addiction,' and Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights are skipped past in a shallow checklist. We Were Liars (English) Showrunners: Julie Plec & Carina Adly Mackenzie Cast: Emily Alyn Lind, Caitlin FitzGerald, Mamie Gummer, Candice King, Rahul Kohli, Shubham Maheshwari, Esther McGregor, Joseph Zada, David Morse Episodes: 8 Run-time: 51-61 minutes Storyline: An affluent teen cannot remember what happened to her the previous summer and the more she tries to find out, the worse it becomes The three sisters have their own issues. Carrie is a recovering addict, Bess's husband Brody (Dylan Bruce) has embezzled his clients' money and the trust fund, and Bess is having an affair. The three women need money and on their mother, Tipper's (Wendy Crewson) passing, the gloves are off as the women plot to get all the Sinclair money and Tipper's pearls. Harris uses his wealth to control his daughters in a pale imitation of Shakespeare's King Lear. Ed (Rahul Kohli), Gat's uncle, is in a long-term relationship with Carrie, who is torn between love and all that lovely Sinclair money as Papa Sinclair will not countenance a marriage to an Indian. The second generation of Sinclairs have standard rich-people problems: from artistic Merrin feeling she is not seen, to Johnny's easy use of his privilege. Gat goes to India for the holidays and returns enlightened, which in turn prompts Cadence to question her generational wealth and her grandfather's ivory collection. There is also the annual lemon race where everyone dresses in shades of yellow, and which Cadence denounces as more colonialism, apart from many other non-events dotted through the eight episodes till we come to the big twist, by which time no one cares what happens to these spoilt rich people. The clothes are nice and beachy, but all the women seem to have gone out of their way to have terrible hair. Cadence dyeing her hair black works as a visual cue if one wishes to differentiate between Summer 16 and Summer 17. The voice-over is flat, and the struggles of the cast with their thinly-written parts are obvious. There are plot points that go nowhere, including one about the fourth Sinclair daughter — unless that is going to be revealed in Season 2. Shudder. We Were Liars is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video
