Health screening scheme launched under TN CM Stalin's name despite court order pending clarification
The CM inaugurated the scheme, under which health camps will be organised across the state with a comprehensive list of diagnostic tests and consultations with specialist doctors available to the public, at St Bede's Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School in Santhome.
A total of 1,256 camps are planned across the state. The first phase of the camps was conducted in various places across all districts on Saturday. The tests available at the camps included blood profile, ECG, echocardiogram, and ultrasound.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister urged the people to make use of the camps, which will be conducted every Saturday. He said the government's aim is to ensure that medical services accessible to the affluent are also available to the poor and needy in both urban and rural areas. He stated that such camps are organised to provide medical care to those who are unable to visit hospitals.

With 268 cadaveric donations in 2024, Tamil Nadu bags centre's award
CHENNAI: Health Minister Ma Subramanian on Saturday said Tamil Nadu has bagged the award from the union government for highest number of cadaveric donations (268) in the country in 2024. Speaking at the launch of 'Nalam Kaakum Stalin' by Chief Minister MK Stalin, Subramanian said Union Health Minister J P Nadda recently presented the award to Dr N Gopalakrishnan, member secretary, Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN). Thanking those who saved many lives with their organs, Stalin, in a post on X, recalled that he had pledged for his organs to be donated even when he was Deputy Mayor of Chennai. Subramanian said the number of cadaveric donations has seen a notable increase after CM's announcement in September 2023 that state honours will be accorded to the deceased whose organs are donated after they are declared brain dead. Subramanian said since then organs of 479 brain dead people have been harvested with the consent of their families since then, saving the lives of thousands of people. According to the TRANSTAN data, in 2024 the state received 268 donors, of which 146 were from government hospitals (54.48%) and 122 from private hospitals(45.52%). Of the 268, a total of 218 were male donors and 50 were female. Of the donors, 863 major organs, and 637 minor organs were utilised. In 2022, the state received 156 donors and this increased to 178 in 2023 and 268 in 2024. The number of cadaveric donations last year is the highest since 2008.

CM launches specialty health camps
Chennai: Chief minister M K Stalin launched specialty health screening camps, Nallam Kaakkum Stalin, across all districts, starting from Chennai on Saturday. Over the next six months, 1,256 high-level health camps will be organized on all working Saturdays, where experts from at least 15 different specialties will provide tests and free consultations. "The test reports will be given to you in a file. This will serve as your medical history," said Stalin, who underwent a cardiac procedure last week. "This is the first stage programme I am participating in, outside Fort St George, after being discharged from the hospital," he said. He said he felt dizzy during his morning walk and was taken to the hospital, where he was admitted for some tests. Stalin said he continued to work from the hospital reviewing the Ungaludan Stalin camps and writing to PM Modi, who visited Tamil Nadu. "After discharge, govt officials suggested we postpone all events, but I declined. Meeting people will help me heal better. This scheme is people's welfare, and that is my welfare," he said amidst applause. The camp aims to target people above 40 years, particularly those with chronic diseases and mental health conditions, pregnant women and nursing mothers, people with disabilities, and tribal and marginalized populations. Specialists from departments such as cardiology, neurology, and ENT, and diagnostics including ECG, ECHO, ultrasound, and X-ray, besides blood tests. Reports will be digitalized and tracked through the department's internal software. "Tamil Nadu must be the top state in offering medical services and protecting the health of people," he said. Earlier, chief secretary N Muruganandam said while Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam offers treatment at people's doorsteps, Nallam Kaakkum Stalin offers master health and preventive health checks. More than 500 labourers from the construction and industries sectors attended the camp organized at the Sarkar Samakulam Govt Higher Secondary School in Coimbatore. Over the next six months, 1,256 high-level health camps will be organised on all working Saturdays, where specialists from at least 15 different specialties will provide tests and free consultations. In Madurai, a total of 1,005 people turned up at the camp held at Govt Model Girls Higher Secondary School at Othakadai. Commercial taxes minister P Moorthy presided over the inauguration. In Trichy, the camp was launched by municipal administration minister K N Nehru at Thillai Nagar. Officials said that 45 such camps will be conducted in the city. Deputy director of health services (DDHS), Madurai, Dr P Kumaragurubaran, said there were facilities for ECG, echo tests, x-rays, and scans in the camp. After registration, blood sample of the patients was collected, before they were sent to the general physician. They were further advised to go to specialists, the DDHS said. "They leave the premises with their medical report as well as the medicines prescribed," he said. Nehru said patients requiring follow-ups and intensive treatments will be treated using the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance (CMCHIS) scheme. Disability certificates can also be obtained from the camp. Those requiring cataract surgeries were referred to KAPV govt medical college hospital. Officials said Ayushman Bharath Health Account (ABHA) cards were provided for beneficiaries based on their Aadhaar card. The Madurai camp also had a cancer screening facility for cervical cancer and breast cancer, both of which can be identified immediately. In paediatrics, a six-year-old was identified with heart disease and referred to a govt hospital. In obstetrics and gynaecology, doctors observed anaemia and high blood pressure in most patients. They were made aware of cervical cancer screening to be undertaken every three years for married women, and how to identify breast cancer at home. District collector K J Praveen Kumar and Govt Rajaji Hospital dean Dr L Arul Sundaresh Kumar visited the camp. Areas concentrated with urban poor in Trichy city will be focused in the next set of health camps expected to go on for a year. Reacting to a question on a case filed by AIADMK leader C Ve Shanmugam challenging the usage of CM Stalin's name in govt schemes, Nehru said, "Even they (ADMK) launched several schemes after their leader Amma (J Jayalalithaa)."
