KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 — The decision on whether Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matin's parents, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari and Ismanira Abdul Manaf, will be called to defend themselves or acquitted by the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court on charges of neglecting the six-year-old autistic child to the point of causing physical harm to him, will be known today.
Judge Dr Syahliza Warnoh is scheduled to give the decision at the end of the prosecution case at 9 am.
If the court decides that the prosecution has succeeded in proving a prima facie case against Ismanira and Zaim Ikhwan, then they will be called to defend themselves, while if not, the two accused will be released and acquitted of the charges.
On April 24, the prosecution closed the case after calling 28 prosecution witnesses throughout the 20-day trial which began on February 4.
Among the prosecution witnesses called to testify were the first person to find Zayn Rayyan's body, Faizul Najib Abd Munaim, Auni Afiqah Abas who was Zayn Rayyan's caregiver, forensic medical consultant Dr Rohayu Shahar Adnan, three investigating officers and two 10-year-old child witnesses.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Raja Zaizul Faridah Raja Zaharudin, Aqharie Durranie Aziz and Nur Sabrina Zubairi, while lawyers Haresh Mahadevan, Ramzani Idris and Lavanesh Haresh represented both accused.
Zaim Ikhwan and Ismanira, both aged 30, were charged with neglecting Zayn Rayyan in a manner likely to cause physical harm to the victim in the vicinity of Block R, Idaman Apartment, Damansara Damai up to the nearby river area between 12 noon on Dec 5 and 9.55 pm on Dec 6, 2023.
They were charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 read with Section 34 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment or a fine of RM50,000 or both, if convicted.
Zayn Rayyan, 6, was reported missing on December 5, 2023 and his body was found the next day in a stream near his house. — Bernama

'The victim claimed he had dealings with an individual who offered the scheme on April 29 and was attracted to invest after being promised high returns. 'He was then instructed to download a mobile application called 'CDT MAX' before transferring money into seven different bank accounts provided for the investment. A total of 15 transactions were made, amounting to RM1,449,750,' he said in a statement. Abdul Malik added that the victim realised he had been scammed when he was asked to make additional payments in order to withdraw his so-called investment profits. MIRI, July 22 — A local man has died after he was crushed by a four-wheel-drive vehicle while performing maintenance work at a workshop located behind a petrol station at Piasau here yesterday. Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah confirmed the incident in a statement, saying a police report was lodged at the Miri Central Police Station following the fatal accident. 'The case is being investigated as a sudden death report (SDR),' he said, adding that the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. He urged members of the public who may have witnessed the incident or have relevant information to come forward and assist in the investigation. They may contact the Miri Central Police Station at 085-427 093 or reach out to Investigating Officer Inspector Nixon Malang at 016-886 5949. KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — A motorcyclist was injured in the neck after being ensnared in a kite string while riding along Jalan Lingkaran Tengah 2, heading towards Sri Damansara near Kepong Metropolitan Lake Garden yesterday. Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief ACP Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said that in the 6pm incident, the 27-year-old victim was riding his motorcycle in the middle lane when his body snagged a kite string, which cut his neck before the string snapped. 'The victim then stopped by the roadside and sought treatment at a polyclinic in Selayang for rope friction burns to his neck,' he said in a statement here today. Mohd Zamzuri said the case is being investigated under Section 80 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for placing objects across the road, obstructing traffic. Earlier, a 41-second video recorded by the victim went viral on social media, showing an injury to his neck caused by a kite string. The victim also requested police to take action against anyone flying kites near the road in question. — Bernama
