Three arrested for gang rape of student at Kolkata law college
Three persons have been arrested in connection with the gang rape of a student at a law college in South Kolkata.
The alleged sexual assault was committed inside the college premises between 7.30 p.m. and 10.50 p.m. on June 25, 2025, a senior official of Kolkata Police official said on Friday (June 27, 2025).
The official said that the accused include 30-year-old Manojit Mishra, 20-year-old Pramit Mukherjee and 19-year-old Zaib Ahmed. One of them is a former student and the rest are current students of the college.
A medical examination of the survivor was conducted at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital.
'The witnesses were examined and their statement were recorded. The P.O (place of occurrence) was visited and it was guarded for pending forensic investigation,' the police officer said.
A First Information Report naming the three accused persons was lodged at the Kasba Police Station based on a complaint by the survivor.
Two of the accused named in the FIR, Mr Mishra and Mr Ahmed, were arrested at around 7.30 p.m. on Thursday (June 26, 2025) from Siddhartha Shankar Sishu Roy Udyan near Talbagan crossing.
The third accused, Mr Mukherjee, was arrested from his residence at around 12.30 a.m. on Friday (June 27, 2025).
The accused's mobile phones have been seized.
The three accused persons are likely to be produced at the Alipore Court on Friday (June 27, 2025). The police will pray for custody of the accused.
The incident of sexual assault comes nearly ten months after a postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and killed at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August last year. The rape of a college student inside college premises once again raises questions on safety and security of women in public spaces in Kolkata.

Nagpur: The Pachpaoli police station set a new benchmark by completing an investigation in a molestation case and preparing charge sheet within just four hours, which is being hailed as the fastest in Nagpur police history. The incident occurred on Thursday at 4.15pm at a skill development centre in Vaishali Nagar. Police said the trainer, identified as Madan Upadhyay, also touched the woman inappropriately. The survivor, initially taken aback by the unexpected turn of events, recovered from the shock and approached the police on Friday. According to the First Information Report (FIR) registered at 2.13pm on Friday, Upadhyay lured the young woman to his centre under the pretext of offering training and assistance in securing a scholarship under the Prime Minister's scheme. As per the complaint, Upadhyay allegedly promised her a job at a reputed organisation but made an outrageous demand: "If you spend one night with me, what will you lose?" An enraged mob nearly lynched Upadhyay, who is also known to deliver sermons, when police intervened and rescued him. After completing the formalities, Upadhyay was released on bail upon furnishing a surety, with a notice issued to him under applicable provisions of the law. Under senior inspector Baburao Raut, a team of Pachpaoli police conducted investigation at an unprecedented speed. The police recorded statements from two key witnesses, prepared a panchnama of the crime scene, and finalised a 21-page charge sheet within four hours. The charge sheet was processed through the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System and submitted for approval to the assistant commissioner of police, Shweta Khade, of Lakadganj division. Cyberabad She Teams nab 51 for indecent acts during 137 decoy operations
The She Teams of Cyberabad Police conducted 137 decoy operations during the week, nabbing 51 individuals for acts of public indecency. While 50 petty cases were registered, one First Information Report (FIR) was lodged. Additionally, 19 complaints were received from women through various channels. A total of 78 awareness programmes and five counselling sessions were carried out across the commissionerate. In a parallel effort, the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) registered one case under the Immoral Traffic Prevention Act, 1986 and two cases of street prostitution in Kukatpally and KPHB. One victim was rescued, and two persons were arrested in a case. In another operation, six female sex workers, a transgender person, and three gay individuals were rescued. The efforts were made as part of its weekly operations between June 23 and 28 by the Cyberabad Women and Children Safety Wing against public harassment and human trafficking.
