Brahmin politics simmers in UP as parties vie for their support

Time of India2 days ago
Lucknow: Amid the PDA poll narrative of the opposition, it is Brahmin politics that has started simmering in Uttar Pradesh.
The situation came to the fore days after senior SP functionary and leader of opposition in UP assembly, Mata Prasad Pandey, accused the BJP of "insulting the Brahmin community".
Now, the focus is on BJP's next move to counter the charge.
Pandey, a Brahmin, ratcheted up the recent incident in which UP minister of state for women and child welfare, Pratibha Shukla, staged a dharna on July 24-25 at Akbarpur police station, accusing cops of targeting her aides. Her husband and former MP, Anil Shukla Warsi, who was present at the dharna, claimed that Brahmins were being unfairly targeted. He even called up deputy CM Brajesh Pathak, urging him to intervene in the case and protect the "interests of Brahmins".
The SP functionary's accusation that the BJP has insulted Brahmins is seen as an attempt to breach BJP's upper-caste vote bank, especially Brahmins.
BJP sources said the party may seek to neutralise the opposition charge by hefting a Brahmin face at a prominent position within the organisation in UP or the Centre in a bid to consolidate its position among the upper caste, which has been traditionally supportive of the saffron outfit since the peak of the Ram temple movement in the early 1990s.

This, experts said, may help the BJP send a reassuring message to the community besides undercutting the SP's narrative that the BJP was getting overly focused on non-dominant OBCs at the cost of Brahmin representation. SP ally Congress too has been seeking to firm up its presence among the Brahmins since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections when it appointed senior party leader Avinash Pandey as in charge of UP.
BJP has been elevating Brahmins at prominent positions.
The foremost example was the appointment of Brajesh Pathak as deputy CM in the UP cabinet. Pathak replaced Dinesh Sharma, who held the position during the first tenure of chief minister Yogi Adityanath. Sharma is now a Rajya Sabha MP and one of the contenders for the post of UP BJP chief. Another Brahmin face who is eyeing the top organisational job is former Basti MP and current party in charge for Assam, Harish Dwivedi.
In the UP BJP organisational structure, two vice-presidents — Vijay Bahadur Pathak and Triyambak Tripathi — and one general secretary — Govind Narayan Shukla — are Brahmins.
A BJP functionary said the party certainly looked to consolidate its support among the Brahmins. Experts underscored how the social engineering comprising Brahmins swung the political fortunes of BSP chief Mayawati, who got an absolute majority for the first time in 2007. The community is also said to have supported SP in 2012 before shifting back to BJP in 2017.

2 Samajwadi Party leaders booked over PDA Pathshala, school merger protest

An FIR was registered against Samajwadi Party leader Rachna Singh Gautam on Friday for allegedly conducting an unauthorised 'PDA Pathshala' (classroom) outside a government primary school at Shahampur Garhi village in Bilhaur development block of Kanpur. A PDA Pathshala started by SP in Uttar Pradesh. (SOURCED) Police have also registered a case against a Samajwadi Party leader and a dozen people in Bhadohi for allegedly involving schoolchildren in protest against the Uttar Pradesh government's decision to merge schools with low enrolment, officials said. The 'PDA Pathshala' in Bilhaur violated multiple regulations, including provisions under the IT Act and the Right to Education (RTE) Act, officials said. Gautam supposedly held such 'classes' in other villages as well. Gautam organised the 'pathshala' without prior approval from local authorities, and continued with the programme despite objections from the school administration, according to the complaint of the block education officer (BEO). Children were allegedly taught political slogans and references associated with the SP's PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) campaign in the 'pathshala' held in the vicinity of a government school. BEO Ravi Kumar Singh confirmed that photographs and videos of the event had been submitted to the district administration. In the visuals, students are seen reciting phrases linked to the SP, while some videos also allegedly show incorrect basic educational content being taught. These materials were circulated on social media by Gautam herself, Singh said. The BEO said, 'Running such parallel educational setups without any official recognition or permission is illegal. No arrangement can operate alongside a government institution without due process. What was done here is unauthorised.' Kanpur's additional DCP West Kapil Dev Singh stated that a case had been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the IT Act. 'The matter is under investigation,' he said. The FIR includes charges related to misuse of a government facility, spreading misinformation, and political exploitation of children. In a statement, Gautam alleged that the FIR was politically motivated. 'The government is trying to silence voices who are working for marginalised children. I will continue holding such classes. The closure of schools affects the PDA children the most,' she said. In Bhadohi, district magistrate Shailesh Kumar said 40 students of the primary school in Sikandra village under Aurai block were shifted to a vacant anganwadi centre in nearby Pilkhani village -- around 800 metres away -- with the consent of their parents. He said local Samajwadi Party leader Anjani Saroj, along with her supporters, visited the anganwadi centre on Wednesday and distributed pencils, erasers and other items to the children. Later, she allegedly lured the students with toffees, handed them banners and posters and led them in a protest march back to the Sikandra primary school. The matter was probed by the chief development officer and the sub-divisional magistrate, following which the school's headmaster lodged a complaint with the Chauri police station, the DM said. A case was registered against Saroj and others on Thursday evening, officials said. In view of the alleged negligence in the matter, a departmental inquiry has been ordered against Ramakant Singroul, assistant education officer of Aurai, he added. Station house officer of Chauri, Ramesh Kumar, said a case has been lodged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita based on a complaint by headmaster Sabhajit Yadav. (With agencies)

Arrest of nuns in Chhattisgarh: Rajeev Chandrasekhar meets Thrissur Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath

THRISSUR: BJP state chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Friday visited Thrissur Archbishop and president of Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI), Mar Andrews Thazhath, and assured all support for the release of two Malayali nuns arrested in Chhattisgarh. Speaking to the press after the meeting, Mar Thazhath said this was not the first case of arrest involving nuns. There should be a mechanism to ensure justice for the nuns who conduct social work and charity. He added that the Church welcomed the support extended by all, irrespective of political inclinations. Minority rights should be protected across the country, he said. 'The BJP has been following up the case since the moment it was brought to our notice. Judiciary and the legal system will take their own time. But, it is assured that the Chhattisgarh government would not oppose the nuns' bail plea when it comes up before the court. Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah had personally communicated it to me, and I visited Mar Andrews Thazhath to communicate this to him,' Rajeev said. It was a misunderstanding which led to the arrest of the nuns, he said. Two nuns Vandana Francis and Preeta Mary were arrested by Durg police as they were accompanied by tribal girls from Chhattisgarh. They were accused of human trafficking and conversion. However, it is reported that the girls were taken out of their homes for jobs with their consent as they were above 18 years and with their parents' knowledge. The girls follow Christian faith. However, while taking human resources from Chhattisgarh, agents or employers are supposed to register it on a portal even if it is within the state. 'In this case, this registration was not done,' he added.

Nuns arrest due to ‘misunderstanding', will be released soon: BJP state chief

Thrissur (Kerala): BJP state chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Friday said the arrest of two nuns in Chhattisgarh over allegations of human trafficking and forced conversion was due to a 'misunderstanding' and that they will be released on bail soon. Chandrasekhar made the statement after meeting with Archbishop of Trichur Andrews Thazhath, the president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI), to brief him that the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister have assured the nuns would be released on bail. The BJP state president said that both the PM and HM assured him that the state government will not oppose the bail pleas of the nuns. 'It is a judicial process. Let it happen. I only want to say that don't politicise the issue. We are not seeing it as politics. We are only trying to help the people. This was a misunderstanding,' he contended. Chandrasekhar said that there is a law regulating private placement agencies in Chhattisgarh which requires that young women moving from one district to another for jobs have to register on a portal. 'That was not done. Hence, the misunderstanding and the subsequent police action,' he said. Meanwhile, Archbishop Thazhath, after the meeting with the BJP state chief, told reporters the church wants the nuns to be released on bail during the day. He said it was 'painful' to hear about the action taken against the nuns. The Archbishop also said he informed Chandrasekhar about the increasing attacks on the Christian community in the country and the need to ensure their security. Nuns Preethi Merry and Vandana Francis along with Sukaman Mandavi were arrested at Durg railway station on July 25 following a complaint by a local Bajrang Dal functionary who accused them of forcibly converting three girls from Narayanpur and trafficking them.
