PhilHealth removes 45-Day benefit limit for members
PhilHealth President and CEO, Edwin Mercado, explained in a statement on March 20 that the policy, which has been in place since 2006, is now considered an 'outdated cost-containment strategy.'
Mercado acknowledged the policy's initial purpose but emphasized that with recent changes in the payment system, it is time for reform. He highlighted that medical needs are unpredictable, and many services require coverage beyond 45 days.
Under the old policy, members were entitled to a maximum of 45 days for room and board, with an additional 45 days shared among dependents. PhilHealth has already expanded coverage in some areas, such as hemodialysis, which was increased from 90 to 156 sessions.
The state health insurer is committed to ensuring that Filipinos with chronic illnesses or severe conditions continue to receive the necessary care.
However, PhilHealth stressed that benefits should be utilized based on medical necessity, and patient care will be monitored to ensure proper adherence to clinical standards and reimbursement rules.

The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) will open its doors days before the much-anticipated Bagong Bayani ng Mundo – OFW Serbisyo Caravan officially kicks off in Dubai. As part of the pre-caravan rollout from July 28 to 30, PhilHealth will set up at the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Dubai, offering vital services including membership registration, record updates, claims processing, and issuance of PhilHealth IDs and Member Data Records (MDRs). Pre-registration is required to access the services, but walk-in clients with flights the next day may also be accommodated, according to the MWO-Dubai. Marcos vows to cut patient costs, eyes PhilHealth reform
President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. has pledged to reduce Filipinos' out-of-pocket healthcare costs, including patient contributions to PhilHealth, as part of his administration's goal to provide more accessible medical services. Speaking during the ceremonial turnover of patient transport vehicles on Wednesday, Marcos said that PhilHealth coverage is being expanded in terms of both scope and services. 'We're increasing PhilHealth's insurance coverage and expanding the services it provides,' the President said. Marcos acknowledged that patients still pay for some services but emphasized a gradual reduction in their financial contribution. 'Even when patients go for a check-up or treatment, they still contribute. We're working to bring that cost down slowly,' he said. The President expressed hope that, as the economy improves, contributions might eventually be eliminated, leaving only a minimal administrative fee. 'In other countries I've seen, patients only pay around a hundred pesos for administrative costs. That's our aspiration,' he added. However, he admitted that current funding is not enough to fully realize this vision. 'Our system isn't yet sufficient. Funding is always tight. But we are adjusting the budget carefully to accelerate healthcare improvements for the public,' Marcos explained. This initiative is part of a broader push by the administration to provide better financial protection and healthcare access for Filipinos.

In a TikTok video posted by @ Tito Michael shared his surprise and gratitude upon receiving a gold coin and a letter of appreciation—an initiative from the UAE leadership to honor the bravery and dedication of medical frontline workers. He shared that the letter, which accompanied the coin, expressed the President's appreciation to those who played a vital role in the country's pandemic response. 'It says here, 'To all of our frontline heroes, it is a great privilege to extend my sincere and heartfelt thanks to you for the vital role that you played in response to the COVID-19 pandemic,'' he read in the video. Tito Michael recalled how he served as a team leader in the ICU of his facility, stepping up during a time when critical care nurses were urgently needed. He said he had no idea how he managed to survive the ordeal, describing it as one of the most difficult periods in his nursing career.
