Indian Railways: Engineer who designed Vande Bharat Express is unhappy with Amrit Bharat Train due to....
The Indian Railways has inducted its newest Amrit Bharat trains into its fleet. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently flagged off four non-AC Amrit Bharat trains, giving the gift of high-tech trains to the people after the Vande Bharat trains. The Railways is planning to run as many as 100 Amrit Bharat trains on major stations. It is a non-AC sleeper class train which has 12 sleeper class coaches and 8 general class coaches. However, former General Manager of the Integral Coach Factory, Sudhanshu Mani, the person who made the Vande Bharat Express, is not happy with the Amrit Bharat trains. According to Mani, there should be no place for such non-AC trains in developed India.
According to media reports, Mani said that the time has come to decommission non-AC sleeper class trains as they do not match the dream of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's developed India.

'Earlier such things were being said that the railways will make only AC trains. I liked this idea because with this, even a poor man can travel in AC. It was like Garib Rath. Today the poor do not have money, so they should be given the facility of traveling in AC at a low fare. Tomorrow, when the country develops and the poor also have money, then you can raise the rent,' he said,
How Will The Loss Of Railways Be Compensated?
As per Mani, poor people also deserve better facilities. Now it is shameful to talk about non-AC trains in developed India. He advocated for government intervention to improve the travel experiences of marginalised people, suggesting that the government can give the poor a chance to travel in Garib Rath or at a lower fare. Talking about the loss to Railways, he suggested that it can be compensated by trains like Vande Bharat.

Increase Vande Bharat Trains Speed
The former railway official suggested that passengers can pay a higher fare if the speed of Vande Bharat trains is increased. Currently, the average speed of Vande Bharat trains is 70 to 90 km, which can be increased to 100 to 150 km.
The Amrit Bharat train is a push-pull train. This means these trains have engines on both the front and back sides. The Railway Ministry promotes Amrit Bharat trains as low-cost, high-speed trains.

How many new trains has Centre introduced to improve regional connectivity in last one year?
Indian Railways new trains: Indian Railways (IR) is considered as the backbone of the national economy. In recent years, it has undertaken several initiatives to enhance connectivity, including the introduction of new trains, track doubling and expansion, and the construction of Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and Road Under Bridges (RUBs). Apart from these, the national transporter is also actively redeveloping stations across the country under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS). Since the railway network spans across state boundaries, train services are introduced based on operational requirements across various regions. This raise an interesting question: how many new trains have been introduced in the past year? The question surfaced after Rajya Sabha MP Medha Vishram Kulkarni asked Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for details on the number of new trains launched over the last year. She also sought information on how many trains pass through Maharashtra, particularly Pune city. In response, Vaishnaw on Friday (July 25, 2025) informed that Indian Railways introduced a total of 182 new train services during the period 2024–25 and 2025–26 (up to June 2025). With the launch of these new trains, the regional connectivity has improved further. 'To cater to the needs of passengers, IR, during 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 (upto June,2025 ) have introduced 182 train services of which the following 20 train services, on originating/Terminating basis, are catering to the needs of stations located in the State of Maharashtra…,' the minister added. The minister also stated that a new train will be introduced between Pune and Rewa. He also stated that CSMT-Jalna Vande Bharat train will be extended. '…it has also been decided to introduce a new train between Pune and Rewa [with commercial stoppages inter alia at Gondia, Nagpur, Wardha, Akola, Bhusaval, Manmad, Kopargaon, Ahmednagar, Daund] and to extend 20705/20706 Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj (T) – Jalna Vande Bharat Express (six days a week) upto Hazur Sahib Nanded,' he said. The Railway Minister also noted that Pune, Nasik and Aurangabad are presently being served by 291, 155 and 62 train services, respectively. 'Moreover, introduction of new train services is an ongoing process on Indian Railways subject to traffic justification, operational feasibility, resource availability, etc,' Vaishnaw added. NGT pulls up OSPCB for violating own norms
CUTTACK: In a significant ruling, the National Green Tribunal (NGT's) east zone bench has pulled up the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) for granting permissions in gross violation of its own environmental guidelines to the Rengali railway siding operated by East Coast Railway (ECoR) in Sambalpur district. The petition, filed in 2024 by high court advocate Shivsankar Mohanty, alleged that loading and unloading of raw materials at the goods shed, situated at Rengali railway station, was causing serious environmental and health risks to the nearby residential population. The bench comprising Justice B Amit Sthalekar (Judicial Member) and Dr Arun Kumar Verma (Expert Member) held that the Rengali railway siding is dangerously close to multiple sensitive public spaces. These include a government primary school at Chhauldhipa (100 m), another school at Station Basti (130 m), a modern public school (110 m), a Shiva temple (120 m), and a Maa Durga temple (95 m). 'We are surprised as to how the Consent to Establish and Consent to Operate was granted by the Odisha State Pollution Control Board at the initial stage itself,' the bench observed, pointing out that the Board had violated its own guidelines dated April 16, 2010. Although the Rengali siding is currently non-operational and was used for only about a month, the Tribunal expressed concern over the regulatory failure. However, it ruled out the imposition of environmental compensation on the Railways, noting that the OSPCB had not alleged any fraud on the part of the former in obtaining the consents. 'The Railways cannot be penalised for the gross lapses committed by the Odisha State Pollution Control Board while granting Consent to Establish in violation of its own guidelines,' the bench stated. The Tribunal also took note of a fresh application submitted by the Railways on August 12, 2024, seeking consent to handle 13,500 MT of coal per month at the same site. It directed that no fresh Consent to Establish be granted in violation of the existing guidelines.

Why Vande Bharat trains have seen a dip in average speed: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw explains
Indian Railways, Vande Bharat train: Developed by the Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF), the Vande Bharat trains have significantly enhanced intercity connectivity while reducing travel time. Since its inception in 2019, these trains have been running with full occupancies. At present, there are around 140 Vande Bharat train services running across the country. As Vande Bharat trains are emerging as a popular travel choice, it's important to understand the speed at which this semi-high-speed train operates. The question gains relevance as Dr Fauzia Khan, a Rajya Sabha MP, sought clarification from Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on whether the government is aware that the average speed of Vande Bharat trains has decreased from 84.48 kilometre per hour in 2020-21 to 76.25 kilometre per hour in 2023-24 due to incomplete track upgradation and infrastructural constraints. The NCP MP also asked about the steps taken to expedite track modernization to enable Vande Bharat trains to run at their designated speeds. In response, Vaishnaw, in a written reply on Friday (July 25), stated that the Vande Bharat Express trains are designed for a top speed of 180 kmph, while their maximum operating speed is 160 kmph. 'The Vande Bharat trains presently running over the Indian Railway network are SemiHigh speed train services with design speed of 180 kmph and maximum operating speed of 160 kmph,' the Union Minister said. Elaborating further, the minister said that the average speed of the train depends upon various factors. 'The average speed of the train depends upon geometry of the track, stoppages enroute, maintenance work in the section etc,' he said. Vaishnaw also stated that the upgradation and improvement of railway tracks on Indian Railways to increase the speed potential have been carried out in a big way during last 10 years. 'The measures for track upgradation include use of 60 kg rails, wider base concrete sleepers, thick web switches, longer rail panels, H Beam sleepers, modern track renewal and maintenance machines etc,' the minister said. He also added that there has been significant increase in speed potential of the tracks.
