‘Foundation' Star Lou Llobell on Gaal Dornick's Season 3 Journey

‘Foundation' Star Lou Llobell on Gaal Dornick's Season 3 Journey

Gizmodo10-07-2025
Foundation returns July 11 to kick off its third season, almost exactly two years since season two began. That's a while for fans to wait, but nobody understands the agony of patience like central character Gaal Dornick, who puts herself into extended cryosleep so she can live to face the Mule, the powerful villain we'll meet in the episodes ahead.
And it's not even her first time in the pod. Season three picks up 152 years after season two; Gaal has already been alive for over 100 years on top of that. At a recent Foundation press day, io9 talked to Lou Llobell about what it's like playing the longest-lived human around.
Fortunately, Llobell says, Gaal's actually been sleeping for most of it. 'I don't think she is processing anything when she is in cryosleep, [though] it's obviously a little bit disorienting right when she wakes up.'
Back in season one, Gaal was forced into an escape pod that took her out of commission for a few decades. Later, she added over 100 years to her lifespan when she needed to travel across the galaxy. But the slumber she undertakes while counting down to the Mule is different, Llobell explains.
'This time around she almost makes that decision for herself. It's not like she's thrown into a cryopod like she has been before, and I think there's a difference there, but she obviously hates it, and it's tedious for her. And as much as she was doing it to get to the point of the Mule being in [existence], she now looks at it as kind of an annoying thing.'
That said, Llobell adds, 'Thank god she had [the cryopod], because otherwise she wouldn't have been able to confront the Mule in the way she does.'
In season three, we see the Second Foundation—set up in secret at the end of season two—undergo a leadership shift. Gaal's mentor, Hari Seldon, is quite elderly when season three begins and soon passes away. That means Gaal—a gifted psychic on a planet full of them—has to step up and be the leader.
'She really does open herself up more … these people are like her. She doesn't feel so left out. They have similarities. She's with her people, and there's something about that that makes her feel comfortable and lets her open up,' Llobell said.
And Gaal proves to be worthy of the responsibility. 'I think she listens to her people. I think she's inclusive. I think she allows people to be themselves. And she's got a plan, and everyone respects her, which I think is really important for her to be a good leader, but she's generous, and that helps.'
Season three also affords Llobell the opportunity to explore what she describes as Gaal's darker side, which comes out as she works to put her plan in motion.
'You see her in a completely different light,' Llobell teased. 'She's honed all these skills, and she's not afraid to make sacrifices or take chances in order to get what she needs to get, and it's pretty cool to see the darker side. I wouldn't say it's a dark side, but she's well-rounded now. She's got a different side to her that sometimes isn't very nice, and that's okay.'
There's a direct line from that not-so-nice side back to the man who taught her many hard lessons: Hari Seldon. That includes his fondness for not telling Gaal his true intentions a lot of the time. 'I think [she] probably understands Hari a lot more now and understands why he made [certain] decisions. She obviously hated it [at the time], but she sees the value in it now.'
Foundation viewers have a special connection to Gaal since she provides its narration. It's her voice we hear at the start and end of most episodes, an important place marker in a show that shifts across time and space and follows quite a few different storylines.
'I get to see a lot of footage before it's fully edited together,' Llobell said. 'So it's really cool. But it's funny because the voiceover for this season was kind of—not an afterthought, but we didn't know how much of it we were going to do until we got into the booth.'
In Llobell's mind, 'it's some version of Gaal in the future telling someone … 'Listen, this is what's happened, this is history, this is the story of how we came to be where we are now.''
Foundation season three begins July 11 on Apple TV+.

Ex-Euphoria Actor's New Job Sparks Fan Outrage

Euphoria fans just received a huge reality check after seeing what it's really like being a struggling actor in Hollywood. Nika King is widely known for playing Leslie Bennett (aka Rue and Gia's mom) on the hit HBO series for the first two seasons. Three years after Season 2 debuted in January 2022, it was announced that Season 3 had finally begun filming. It even included a photo of Zendaya on set for additional proof. Delays in production were due to a slew of reasons, which ranged from the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes in 2023 to alleged behind-the-scenes drama with claims of a "toxic" work environment and grueling "18-hour" workdays. During this delay, Euphoria producer Kevin Turen died in November 2023 from multiple heart issues, and Angus Cloud, who starred as the beloved Fez, tragically died of an accidental overdose at the age of 25 in July 2023. On top of all that, two cast members revealed they had no plans on returning to the show: Barbie Ferriera announced the shocking news shortly after Season 2 ended, while Storm Reid revealed she would be focusing on other things, like graduating from USC and working on projects through her production company. The delays also caused strain and stress for some of the cast members, including Nika. In March 2024, during one of her stand-up comedy shows posted on her TikTok, the actor and comedian admitted she was having trouble paying her rent because filming for Euphoria was taking so long to commence. 'People are like, 'We need Season 3.' I'm like, 'Bitch, I need Season 3. I haven't paid my rent in six months. I thought my career was on the rise after Euphoria. I thought I was good. It don't work that way. I called Taraji [P. Henson} and she was like, 'Bitch, get used to it.''While she recently starred in the American drama film Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot, we should note that filming for it began back in 2022. Fast forward to February 2025, Nika announced her "character is not coming back to the show," after she received tons of DMs and comments asking about Season 3. "Unfortunately, I'm not [returning]," she said in a video posted online. "My character is not coming back to the show, but I am forever grateful to HBO, Zendaya, and Sam Levinson for giving me the opportunity to come on set." "Without Euphoria, I was not able to step into who I am as an actor." Fans showered her with words of encouragement on her future endeavors, while also expressing sadness that they won't see her in future episodes. But concern for Nika grew when she recently shared a video of her cleaning what appeared to be a restaurant kitchen. She captioned the clip, "When ppl ask me if I'm filming S3 of Euphoria?" while the caption for the post read, "A job is a job." Reactions ranged from saying how "fucked up" it is that her promising acting career led her to a non-Hollywood position, to applause for her vulnerability in sharing the realities of being a struggling actor in the industry: At first glance, I had similar thoughts, but I quickly found out there was more to her post than meets the eye. After noticing she tagged an account on the post I checked the page out, and discovered Nika not only works in that kitchen, but she co-owns the establishment it's located in. The account is linked to Blue Tree Cafe, a vegan soul food restaurant run by Nika and her mother, Sharon Allen. The page was a pleasant surprise because the food looks delicious, and their playful relationship shines in their videos. And once others caught on as well, But owning a restaurant is no easy feat either. Nika hopped on a popular social media trend where people show how they mask their true emotions while dealing with a crisis — and for Nika, that was the current status of the restaurant. Nika and her mother also set up a GoFundMe as a way to help the establishment from closing. I truly appreciate the transparency, even if it's done through laughter. I don't know about you, but I'm wishing Nika success in all of her passions — acting, comedy, and restaurateur.

When is Euphoria season 3 releasing? Everything we know so far

By Aman Shukla Published on July 21, 2025, 20:20 IST Last updated July 21, 2025, 20:21 IST Alright, Euphoria fans, let's talk about the elephant in the room: we've been waiting FOREVER for Season 3, and the anticipation is killing us. Since that jaw-dropping Season 2 finale back in February 2022, we've been refreshing our feeds, hoping for any crumb of news about Rue, Jules, and the rest of the East Highland crew. So, when is Euphoria Season 3 finally hitting our screens? What's the vibe going to be? And who's even coming back? Here's everything we know so far. When Is Euphoria Season 3 Coming Out? Drumroll, please… Euphoria Season 3 is officially in the works, with cameras rolling in Los Angeles as of February 10, 2025. But—and I hate to be the bearer of bad news—you're gonna need to chill until 2026 to watch it. Yep, you heard that right. According to JB Perrette, the big boss of Warner Bros. Discovery's streaming division, we're looking at a 2026 premiere. No specific date yet, so don't hold your breath for a trailer dropping this week or anything. Why the long wait? Well, it's been a wild ride. The 2023 Hollywood strikes threw a wrench in things, slowing down writing and filming. Plus, the cast is basically a lineup of A-listers now—Zendaya's out here starring in blockbusters, Sydney Sweeney's booking every role in Hollywood, and Jacob Elordi's, well, being Jacob Elordi. Scheduling them all is probably like herding cats. Oh, and let's not forget the heartbreaking loss of Angus Cloud (our beloved Fez) in July 2023, which shook everyone up. On top of that, Sam Levinson, the show's mastermind, is a perfectionist who takes his sweet time crafting each episode. Colman Domingo, aka Ali, spilled that it takes about a month to shoot just one episode because Levinson's so meticulous. So, yeah, 2026 it is. Who is Coming Back in Euphoria Season 3? The good news? Most of the OGs are returning. HBO confirmed the 'principal cast' is back, so you can expect to see: Zendaya as Rue, obviously, because there's no Euphoria without her. Hunter Schafer as Jules, hopefully giving us more of that emotional depth. Jacob Elordi as Nate, still probably stirring up trouble. Sydney Sweeney as Cassie, ready for more unhinged moments. Alexa Demie as Maddy, serving looks and attitude. Maude Apatow as Lexi, the queen of subtle shade. Eric Dane as Cal Jacobs, who's got some serious explaining to do. Colman Domingo as Ali, popping in as a guest star to drop wisdom. What to expect in Euphoria Season 3? Okay, let's get into the juicy stuff. Season 3 is shaking things up with a five-year time jump. That's right—no more high school drama. Our faves are all grown up, navigating their messy 20s. Zendaya teased this back in 2022, saying she was stoked to see where Rue and the gang end up post-graduation. Costume designer Heidi Bivens also confirmed the time jump, so expect some fire new looks (because Euphoria fashion never misses). Sam Levinson's calling Season 3 a 'film noir' vibe, which sounds super dark and moody—think Rue brooding in a trench coat or something. The focus is on Rue grappling with what it means to stick to her principles in a messed-up world. After everything she went through in Season 2 (that intervention scene still gives me chills), we are rooting for her to find some peace. Zendaya, who's not just starring but also executive producing, hinted she wants a bit of 'happiness and joy' for Rue. Fingers crossed, because our girl deserves a break.
