Firmly believe people-to-people ties at heart of India-US partnership: India announces eight new consular application centres in US
In a post on X, the Embassy of India in Washington, DC shared a video message by Ambassador Vinay Kwatra.
"Announcing major expansion of our Consular Services in the USA beginning August 01, 2025. Here is a message from Ambassador Vinay Kwatra about this expansion and the positive changes it would bring to our service delivery." Ambassador Kwatra said in his statement that the new Indian Consular Application Centres would be in Boston, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Addison, Orlando, Raleigh, and San Jose. "In addition, we would also be opening another Indian Consular Application Centre in Los Angeles very soon. With the opening of these new Indian Consular Application Centres, our presence to provide extensive consular services and related delivery capabilities would increase and expand significantly. Besides, it would also make the delivery of these consular services faster and more accessible to our vibrant Indian diaspora."The Ambassador said that starting August 1, all the Indian consular application centres would also remain open on Saturdays. He noted that this would help significantly enhance not just the availability of various consular services, but also their accessibility to the Indian diaspora. The Ambassador also mentioned the streamlining of various miscellaneous consular services, which would be made available through the Indian Consular Application Centres, and a few of the important services would, however, continue to be dispersed and made available from the embassy premises.

With the opening of two new consulates in Boston and Los Angeles, which the Prime Minister of India had announced a few months ago, we would be able to further strengthen not just a relationship between our two countries, but also our people-to-people ties, particularly in the areas of Boston and Los Angeles". Ambassador Kwatra requested the members of the Indian diaspora to keep visiting the website of the Indian Embassy, where detailed information about the opening of these Indian Consular Application Centres and the availability of various miscellaneous Consular services would be made available more regularly. As per the Ministry of External Affairs, about 5.4 million Indian origin people (per MEA data; includes 2.07 million NRIs) reside in the US. Persons of Indian origin constitute the third-largest Asian ethnic group in the US. The Indian diaspora has been a catalyst in cementing closer ties between India and the US.Earlier this year, in January, the United States held a dedication ceremony for its new Consulate in Bengaluru, which made it the fifth US consulate in India.

Gaza Civil Defence Says Israeli Attacks Kill 68 In 24 Hours
Gaza City: Gaza's civil defence agency said 68 people were killed by Israeli gunfire and air strikes on Tuesday, including 56 who were waiting near aid distribution sites inside the Palestinian territory. Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP that 30 people were killed by Israeli gunfire while waiting for aid near the southern Gaza city of Khan Yunis. The army told AFP that troops "fired warning shots" in the direction "a gathering of Gazans advancing" towards them in the so-called Morag corridor in the south, but added it was "not aware of any casualties as a result". Bassal said another 20 people were killed and 100 wounded by Israeli fire near the Zikim border crossing in northern Gaza, through which some aid trucks have entered the territory in recent weeks. An AFP journalist reported seeing at least a dozen bodies brought to northern Gaza's Hamad Hospital, where a medical source said the victims had been killed in the incident near Zikim. The army told AFP it was looking into the details of the incident. According to Bassal, six more people were killed and 21 injured by Israeli fire in central Gaza while waiting for food near a distribution centre. The Israeli army, however, denied having opened fire near any aid site in central Gaza on Tuesday. Media restrictions in Gaza and difficulties in accessing many areas mean AFP is unable to independently verify the tolls and details provided by the civil defence and the army. Thousands of Gazans gather daily near food distribution points across Gaza, including four belonging to the US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. Since launching in late May, its operations have been marred by near-daily reports of Israeli forces firing on those waiting to collect rations. Israeli restrictions on the entry of supplies into Gaza since the start of the war nearly 22 months ago have led to shortages of food and essential goods, including medicine and fuel, which hospitals rely on to power their generators. - 'No safety' - Bassal said another five people were killed in a predawn air strike on a tent in Al-Mawasi in south Gaza, an area Israeli authorities designated as a safe zone early in the war. "It's said to be a green zone and it's safe, but it's not. They also say that the aid (distribution) is safe, but people die while obtaining aid," said Adham Younes, 30, who lost a relative in the strike. "There's no safety within the Gaza Strip, everyone is exposed to death, everyone is subject to injury." Mahmud Younes, who said he witnessed the strike, told AFP: "We found women screaming -- they were covered in blood. The entire family has been injured." Bassal also reported six people killed in a strike near Gaza City, and one in another near Khan Yunis. The Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas's armed wing, said in a statement Tuesday that they had bombarded an Israeli command-and-control centre in south Gaza's Israeli-controlled Morag corridor. The army said it had no record of such an attack taking place on Tuesday.

‘Sugar prodn dips 23% in 7 yrs despite rise in cane acreage'
Lucknow: UP's sugarcane sector has witnessed an intriguing trend with sugar production by mills falling by almost 23% between 2017-18 and 2024-25, despite a substantial increase in cane acreage and productivity during the period. Industry sources attribute the dip to diversion of cane for Khandsari, low recovery and adverse weather conditions. Data released by the cane development department shows that the area under cane cultivation increased by almost 28% — from 22.99 lakh hectares in 2017-18 to 29.51 lakh hectares in 2024-25. Likewise, the productivity also increased from 79.19 tonnes per hectare to 83 tonnes per hectare, signifying a rise of around 5%. Even cane production went up from 1820.75 lakh tonnes (LT) to 2456.35 LT during the same period. The number of mills crushing cane also rose from 119 to 122, one of the highest in recent times. However, the sugar production dropped from 120.5 lakh tonnes in 2017-18 to 92.45 lakh tonnes in 2024-25, a fall of around 23%. In 2023-24, sugar production in the state was pegged at around 104.13 lakh tonnes. The cane crushing season in UP ended in June earlier this year. Yet, UP happens to be the biggest producer of sugar in the country, surpassing Maharashtra. The western state was the leading producer of sugar last year when it produced around 110 lakh metric tonnes of sugar. This, however, plunged below 90 LMT in 2024-25. Nationally, the total sugar production is estimated to be around 330 lakh tonnes. The fall in sugar production is largely attributed to the diversion of sugar from cane mills to Khandsari, a traditional, unrefined Indian sugar made from sugarcane juice. It's a natural sweetener that retains more nutrients and molasses than refined white sugar. According to an estimate, UP has around 250 Khandsari units, essentially established in parts of west and central UP. Industry sources said that cane growers diverted their produce to Khandsari units for quicker compensation compared to the one paid by the mills. The shift gained pertinence against the backdrop of the state govt keeping the State Advisor Price (SAP) for sugar at Rs 370 per quintal (for early variety) and Rs 360 per quintal for general variety. Another key reason behind the downturn in sugar production is adverse weather conditions — drought and excess rainfall — besides a drop in the quality of cane. Sources said that the cane recovery reduced from around 10.5% in 2017-18 to a little over 9.5% in current times.
