FBI extradites '10 Most Wanted' list fugitive from Mexico: Patel
FBI Director Kash Patel said Francisco Javier Roman-Bardales, a Salvadoran national, was extradited on Monday night and is being transported to the U.S. The federal law enforcement agency worked with the Department of Justice (DOJ) and 'other interagency partners.'
'He was arrested in Mexico and is being transported within the U.S. as we speak, where he will face American justice,' Patel said in a Tuesday morning post on the social platform X.
Patel touted the extradition as a 'major victory both for our law enforcement partners and for a safer America.'
'Thank you to our brave personnel for executing the mission. And thank you to Mexico's SSPC and FGE teams for their support of the FBI in this investigation and arrest,' Patel wrote, referring to the Secretariat of Security and Civilian Protection (SSPC), Mexico's government agency tasked with supervising public safety and security.
Mexican authorities said they arrested Roman-Bardales, 47, Monday in Veracruz, Mexico, on the Teocelo-Baxtla highway.
According to a joint statement from the Mexican Defense Ministry, Navy, Office of Attorney General, the National Guard and SSPC, Roman-Bardales was informed of his arrest, his legal rights were read out to him and he was transferred to Mexico City, 'where he will be taken to the appropriate authority, where he will subsequently be deported to the United States where he is wanted.'
The fugitive was wanted by the FBI for his alleged involvement with MS-13's operations in both Mexico and the U.S.
He was charged with 'several offenses' over his supposed role in 'ordering numerous acts of violence against civilians and rival gang members, as well as his role in drug distribution and extortion schemes in the United States and El Salvador,' according to the FBI.
The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York issued an arrest warrant for Roman-Bardales on Sept. 22, 2022, after he was charged with 'conspiracy to provide and conceal material support and resources to terrorists; narco-terrorism conspiracy; racketeering conspiracy; and alien smuggling conspiracy.'
The FBI was offering up to $250,000 for information leading to Roman-Bardales's arrest. The agency website was updated to list him as 'captured.'
The Trump administration last month designated MS-13, which is believed to have originated in Los Angeles in the 1980s; the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua; and half a dozen Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations.
The Hill has reached out to the DOJ for comment.

This was a conspiracy that Donald Trump, Pam Bondi, and these MAGA extremists have been fanning the flames of for the last several years, and now the chickens are coming home to roost. I discussed how the communication and transparency could be much improved, how the base wasn't going to just move on, and provided options for ways forward. "Now, I'm giving them space to operate. The ball is in their court, and I'm trusting those in charge, many of whom I know personally and consider friends, to find a solution, which I'm confident is in the works. I will be more than happy to talk about Epstein again as updates come." Kirk then replied with a full quote of his remarks. What Happens Next The DOJ's findings and the Trump administration's messaging will likely continue to influence public and political discourse and opinion. Active shooter killed in attempt to ambush Border Patrol agents in Texas
An active shooter armed with tactical gear and a rifle opened fire upon Border Patrol agents as they arrived at a Border Patrol annex facility in McAllen, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley on Monday, law enforcement sources say. Agents and local police returned fire and killed the gunman. No federal agents were hit, but one McAllen police officer was struck. Law enforcement sources say the officer is in stable condition. "This morning an individual opened fired at the entrance of the United States Border Patrol sector annex in McAllen, Texas. Both Border Patrol agents and local police helped neutralize the shooter," the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement to Fox News. "This is an ongoing investigation led by the FBI. More information will be shared as it becomes available." Law enforcement believes the attack was a purposeful ambush targeting Border Patrol officials. Local police say they will hold a news conference on the attack later Monday. The incident comes just days after another Texas police officer was shot Friday night near U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Prairieland Detention Facility, authorities said. "We are closely monitoring the attacks on DHS detention facilities in Prairieland, TX, and Portland, OR, and are coordinating with the [US Attorney offices] and our law enforcement partners," said Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche on X. "The Department [of Justice] has zero tolerance for assaults on federal officers or property and will bring the full weight of the law against those responsible," he added. Several suspects were arrested after an officer with the Alvarado Police Department was shot at around 11 p.m. while responding to reports of a suspicious person, FOX Dallas reported. When the officer tried making contact with the person, shots were fired and the officer was struck in the neck. The officer was flown to a Fort Worth hospital for treatment and was later released. Several armed suspects fled but were arrested with the help of the Johnson County Sheriff's Office and other authorities, the news station reported.
