FBI extradites '10 Most Wanted' list fugitive from Mexico: Patel
FBI Director Kash Patel said Francisco Javier Roman-Bardales, a Salvadoran national, was extradited on Monday night and is being transported to the U.S. The federal law enforcement agency worked with the Department of Justice (DOJ) and 'other interagency partners.'
'He was arrested in Mexico and is being transported within the U.S. as we speak, where he will face American justice,' Patel said in a Tuesday morning post on the social platform X.
Patel touted the extradition as a 'major victory both for our law enforcement partners and for a safer America.'
'Thank you to our brave personnel for executing the mission. And thank you to Mexico's SSPC and FGE teams for their support of the FBI in this investigation and arrest,' Patel wrote, referring to the Secretariat of Security and Civilian Protection (SSPC), Mexico's government agency tasked with supervising public safety and security.
Mexican authorities said they arrested Roman-Bardales, 47, Monday in Veracruz, Mexico, on the Teocelo-Baxtla highway.
According to a joint statement from the Mexican Defense Ministry, Navy, Office of Attorney General, the National Guard and SSPC, Roman-Bardales was informed of his arrest, his legal rights were read out to him and he was transferred to Mexico City, 'where he will be taken to the appropriate authority, where he will subsequently be deported to the United States where he is wanted.'
The fugitive was wanted by the FBI for his alleged involvement with MS-13's operations in both Mexico and the U.S.
He was charged with 'several offenses' over his supposed role in 'ordering numerous acts of violence against civilians and rival gang members, as well as his role in drug distribution and extortion schemes in the United States and El Salvador,' according to the FBI.
The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York issued an arrest warrant for Roman-Bardales on Sept. 22, 2022, after he was charged with 'conspiracy to provide and conceal material support and resources to terrorists; narco-terrorism conspiracy; racketeering conspiracy; and alien smuggling conspiracy.'
The FBI was offering up to $250,000 for information leading to Roman-Bardales's arrest. The agency website was updated to list him as 'captured.'
The Trump administration last month designated MS-13, which is believed to have originated in Los Angeles in the 1980s; the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua; and half a dozen Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations.
The Hill has reached out to the DOJ for comment.

US launches new bid to keep migrants detained by denying hearings, memo shows
The Trump administration is launching a new effort to keep immigrants who entered the US illegally detained by denying them bond hearings, an internal memo showed, a change that could further swell the numbers of those held. The guidance by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a portion of which Reuters reviewed, could be applied to millions of people who crossed the border illegally and are contesting their deportation. 3 A bus is pictured at the Bluebonnet Detention Facility, where Venezuelan migrants at the center of a Supreme Court ruling on deportation are held, in Anson, Texas, on April 20, 2025. REUTERS President Donald Trump has vowed mass deportations, which he says are needed after high levels of illegal immigration under his predecessor, Democrat Joe Biden. Congress passed a spending law this month that provides funding to detain at least 100,000 people, a steep increase over the record 58,000 in custody by late June. The Washington Post first reported the new ICE policy limiting bond hearing eligibility, citing a July 8 memo by its acting director, Todd Lyons. The guidance shared with Reuters called for ICE to interpret several immigration law provisions as 'prohibitions on release' after an arrest, adding the shift in policy was 'likely to be litigated.' 3 A US Department Of Homeland Security and US Customs and Border Protection sign is displayed at the US Customs and Border Protection Headquarters on May 18, 2025 in Washington, DC. REUTERS It encouraged ICE prosecutors 'to make alternative arguments in support of continued detention' during immigration court hearings. The new policy appeared to reverse legal standards governing detention for decades, said Tom Jawetz, a former homeland security official in the Biden administration, calling it 'a radical departure that could explode the detention population.' The US Department of Homeland Security and ICE did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Charlie Kirk Says He Is 'Done Talking' About Jeffrey Epstein for the Moment
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Turning Point USA cofounder and CEO Charlie Kirk said he is "done talking about Epstein for the time being" on his podcast Monday amid the firestorm of backlash the Trump administration has faced following a memo on sex offender Jeffrey Epstein's death and investigation last week. Newsweek reached out to the Department of Justice (DOJ) via online form for comment. Why It Matters The Epstein case has remained a lightning rod in American political discourse, fueling conspiracy theories and mistrust in governmental institutions over the past several years. The controversy reignited after the Justice Department's recent memo concluded there was no evidence of a client list or blackmail materials, contradicting previous statements. Disagreements and criticism over the handling of the Epstein investigation have intensified from both President Donald Trump's supporters and detractors. The fallout has deepened divisions within conservative ranks, as prominent figures debate the credibility of the government's official narrative and the conduct of officials like Attorney General Pam Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel and FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino. Amid the backlash, Trump has publicly defended Bondi. (Photo by) Turning Point USA cofounder Charlie Kirk is shown as President Donald Trump, not pictured, speaks during a swearing-in ceremony for interim U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C. (Photo by) What To Know Kirk made his remarks following the release of a joint memo from the DOJ and FBI saying there was no evidence that Epstein maintained a "client list" and reiterating that the disgraced financier died in 2019 by suicide in his prison cell. While speaking on his podcast, The Charlie Kirk Show, on Monday, Kirk mentioned the Epstein controversy: "Plenty was said this last weekend at our event about Epstein. Honestly, I'm done talking about Epstein for the time being. I'm gonna trust my friends in the administration, I'm gonna trust my friends in the government to do what needs to be done, solve it, ball's in their hands. I've said plenty this last weekend. So, if you guys want to see my commentary on it, that's fine. We have escalatory action potentially being taken in Ukraine and Russia. We have tons of announcements happening when it comes to NATO." Kirk was referencing a Turning Point USA's Student Action Summit held over the weekend in Florida. Continuing in the video, Kirk said: "But let me just say this again—everyone knows my opinion about the Epstein thing, the messaging fumble. I would love to see the DOJ move to unseal the grand jury testimony. I think that would be a big win. I would love to see that. And I'm gonna trust my friends Kash Patel, Dan Bongino, my friend Pam Bondi. All these guys. I'm gonna—Todd Blanche—I'm gonna trust them to solve it. Ball's in their court. I think that there was plenty of, let's say, speeches that were directed towards this topic this last weekend. So, we don't need to spend our valuable time on this program relitigating it." CNN also reported, citing three people familiar with the matter, that the president called Kirk over the weekend to express his support for the attorney general amid the strife. Kirk has repeatedly called for the Epstein list to be released, saying it would be "one of the surest ways to rid our billionaire class of the corruption and cowardice that currently plagues it." He also called on voters to pick Trump ahead of the election to ensure its release. (Photo by) Turning Point USA cofounder Charlie Kirk speaks after President Donald Trump's inauguration during an event at Capital One Arena on January 20 in Washington, D.C. (Photo by) What People Are Saying House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Monday, while speaking to reporters: "The American people deserve to know the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth as it relates to this whole sordid Jeffrey Epstein matter. Democrats didn't put the Jeffrey Epstein thing into the public domain. This was a conspiracy that Donald Trump, Pam Bondi, and these MAGA extremists have been fanning the flames of for the last several years, and now the chickens are coming home to roost. The American people deserve to know the truth. "What if anything, is the Trump administration and the Department of Justice hiding? What are you hiding? If you're not hiding anything, prove that to the American people, and if you are trying to hide something, as many of Donald Trump's MAGA supporters apparently believe, then the Congress should actually work hard to try to uncover the truth for the American people. "There are only two things that are possible here. Option one, Donald Trump, Pam Bondi and the MAGA extremists intentionally lied to the American people for years about the Jeffrey Epstein situation. That's option one. "Option two is that, in fact ... is reason for the American people to be concerned, as it relates to what information has not been released that could be damaging to the Trump administration and the friends and family of the Trump administration and their billionaire corrupt supporters. And so, they are actively engaging in a cover-up. Option one: they lied for years. Option two: they're engaging in a cover-up. At this point, it seems reasonable that can only be one of the two things. And so, it's Congress' responsibility, in a bipartisan way, to ask the questions and try to get answers on behalf of the American people." Spokesperson for Turning Point, Andrew Kolvet, to Newsweek via email on Monday: "Charlie didn't say he was done talking about Epstein. He said 'for the time being.' He's feels confident the administration has heard the concern expressed by himself, by the grassroots and by the attendees and speakers at TPUSA's Student Action Summit in Tampa over the weekend. He is hopeful a change in approach is underway." Kirk on X, formerly Twitter, on Monday: "This is such a lame, non-controversy. Yes, I spent the weekend talking about Epstein, as did many of our speakers at SAS. Nothing was off limits. I discussed how the communication and transparency could be much improved, how the base wasn't going to just move on, and provided options for ways forward. "Now, I'm giving them space to operate. The ball is in their court, and I'm trusting those in charge, many of whom I know personally and consider friends, to find a solution, which I'm confident is in the works. I will be more than happy to talk about Epstein again as updates come." Kirk then replied with a full quote of his remarks. What Happens Next The DOJ's findings and the Trump administration's messaging will likely continue to influence public and political discourse and opinion. Lara Trump, daughter-in-law to the president, also teased more coming from the Trump administration regarding the Epstein case.

Active shooter killed in attempt to ambush Border Patrol agents in Texas
An active shooter armed with tactical gear and a rifle opened fire upon Border Patrol agents as they arrived at a Border Patrol annex facility in McAllen, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley on Monday, law enforcement sources say. Agents and local police returned fire and killed the gunman. No federal agents were hit, but one McAllen police officer was struck. Law enforcement sources say the officer is in stable condition. "This morning an individual opened fired at the entrance of the United States Border Patrol sector annex in McAllen, Texas. Both Border Patrol agents and local police helped neutralize the shooter," the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement to Fox News. "This is an ongoing investigation led by the FBI. More information will be shared as it becomes available." Law enforcement believes the attack was a purposeful ambush targeting Border Patrol officials. Local police say they will hold a news conference on the attack later Monday. The incident comes just days after another Texas police officer was shot Friday night near U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Prairieland Detention Facility, authorities said. "We are closely monitoring the attacks on DHS detention facilities in Prairieland, TX, and Portland, OR, and are coordinating with the [US Attorney offices] and our law enforcement partners," said Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche on X. "The Department [of Justice] has zero tolerance for assaults on federal officers or property and will bring the full weight of the law against those responsible," he added. Several suspects were arrested after an officer with the Alvarado Police Department was shot at around 11 p.m. while responding to reports of a suspicious person, FOX Dallas reported. When the officer tried making contact with the person, shots were fired and the officer was struck in the neck. The officer was flown to a Fort Worth hospital for treatment and was later released. Several armed suspects fled but were arrested with the help of the Johnson County Sheriff's Office and other authorities, the news station reported.
