EV maker Lucid's quarterly deliveries rise but miss estimates
July 2 (Reuters) - Electric automaker Lucid (LCID.O), opens new tab on Wednesday reported a 38% rise in second-quarter deliveries, which, however, missed Wall Street expectations amid economic uncertainty. Demand for Lucid's pricier luxury EVs have been softer as consumers, pressured by high interest rates, shift towards cheaper hybrid and gasoline-powered cars. Lucid delivered 3,309 vehicles in the quarter ended June 30, compared with estimates of 3,611 vehicles, according to seven analysts polled by Visible Alpha. It had delivered 2,394 vehicles in the same period last year. Saudi Arabia-backed Lucid produced 3,863 vehicles in the quarter, missing estimates of 4,305 units, but above the 2,110 vehicles made a year ago. The company stuck to its annual production target in May, allaying investor worries about manufacturing at a time when several automakers pulled their forecasts due to an uncertain outlook. U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff policy has led to a rise in vehicle prices as manufacturers struggle with high material costs, forcing them to reorganize supply chains and produce domestically. Lucid's interim CEO, Marc Winterhoff, had said in May that the company was expecting a rise of 8% to 15% in overall costs due to new tariffs. The company's fortunes rest heavily on the success of its newly launched Gravity SUV and the upcoming mid-size car, which targets a $50,000 price point, as it looks to expand its vehicle line and take a larger share of the market. Deliveries at EV maker Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab dropped 13.5% in the second quarter, dragged down by CEO Elon Musk's right-wing political stances and an aging vehicle line-up that has turned off some buyers.

As annual degree ceremonies take place on campuses across the country this month, new graduates will doubtless be turning their thoughts to enjoying some stress-free time off. Given the current state of the labour market, some may be forced to make that break a long one. For university leavers, these are worrying times. A mounting pile of data suggests that accessing the kind of entry-level jobs that traditionally put degree holders on a path to professional success is becoming ever harder. One report published last month by the job-search site Indeed found that the market for young people fresh out of university is tougher than at any time since 2018. Compared with last year, the number of jobs advertised for recent graduates is down 33%. Some of the squeeze can be put down to a general slowdown in hiring, as employers opt for caution in an unpredictable, growth-starved economic climate. Another analysis, published this week, found that the number of entry-level jobs on offer throughout the labour market has fallen. But the steepest drop-off appears to be in professional occupations, where the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) may be beginning to affect the bottom rungs of the white-collar career ladder. According to some analysts, a growing number of companies are using AI to perform many of the collative, summarising or research-heavy kind of tasks that young graduates might previously have done. IBM's human resources department now deploys AI to perform 94% of routine tasks, including performance reviews and development plans. Other employers may be hiring fewer graduates than in the past on the assumption that the use of AI will transform their productivity. For a graduate cohort whose education was blighted by the pandemic, and which is burdened by an average student debt of about £45,000, such developments risk stunting careers before they have begun. Recruitment systems are steadily being transformed through the introduction of AI-driven sifting processes, in which applications are rejected without a human judgment being made. A sustained contraction of the graduate job market, as pathways into professional careers are shortsightedly shut down in the name of cost savings, would further undermine trust between the generations at a time when it is already in short supply. The technology minister, Peter Kyle, has urged businesses and employees to 'act now' in gaining AI skills or risk being left behind, and the government hopes to collaborate with tech companies to deliver training to 7.5 million workers. But a focus on those hoping to enter the digitised workplace is also clearly needed. The evidence that entry-level jobs in areas such as law, finance and consulting are becoming scarcer should set alarm bells ringing both in Westminster and in boardrooms. Politically and economically, the country cannot afford to waste the acquired skills, creativity and dynamism of those who have actually come of age in the digitised world. That may mean companies eventually reimagining the spectrum of early career opportunities that can be offered to recent graduates. But business and government should make it a priority to ensure that they are given the openings and encouragement they need in a rapidly transforming environment. Innovations such as ChatGPT have become embedded in everyday life at vertiginous speed. But their benefits must not come at the expense of the young talent that will be crucial to shaping our future. How Earth could look in 10,000 years, according to AI

This process is known as globalisation, and also means that a lot of modern buildings look the same. But as global warming and climate change threatens the Earth, Metro wanted to get a clearer idea of what the Earth will look like in 10,000 years. So, naturally, we turned to AI and this is what it showed us (Picture: Shutterstock / Shutterstock AI) AI takes information from what is already out there on the internet – so it can't make up something new. However, this image looks slightly dystopian, as the AI Midjourney has spat out an image of Mexico being run-down, with large tech towers looming in the background that look slightly like they have been made out of scrap metal. We would hope that by the year 12,025 things would be more equal, but apparently, AI does not see it that way (Picture: Midjourney) AI seems to imagine that South Africa will begin to merge its landscape into nature, and greenery will be everywhere. Perhaps that is what has cleared up the skies, as climate change as we see it could lead to greyer skies. Although it doesn't say much to overpopulation, it is still nice to see humans are thriving, and are adapting to living with the Earth rather than destroying it (Picture: Midjourney) India is known for its toxic smog, and yet, not a trace of it has found its way into this image. Either there are aliens in the sky, or we have dramatically changed the face of air travel, and the luminous blue really screams 'futuristic'. AI did a nice touch adding traditional architecture with sky high roads and pointy high-rises – although the middle structure does seem to be drawing everyone in since they're all eerily walking in the same direction (Picture: ChatGPT) Now this is what we're talking about. It seems New Zealand has managed to do well for itself, and 10,000 years is enough time for a drastic makeover. Although we can't really say for sure what the massive hole in the right hand side building is for sure, we can guess it's for those air-travel things to do a loop-de-loop. If you can't afford your own personal air-craft, no need to worry as there is a handy high-speed rail that lets you see the greenery. Frodo should have waited to take the ring to Mordor, as this seems so much nicer (Picture: ChatGPT) Drivers beware, walkers don't care. Although any day crossing a road in present-day London will tell you that is already true. The main question here is why is the US so much more futuristic? And where are all those people going? Why are some people wearing more tech than others and what does it allow them to do? The year 12, 025 seems like a confusing time. The greenery is a nice touch, although it does seem that a lot of office space will be given to plants instead so maybe we will get those four day working weeks after all (Picture: Shutterstock / Shutterstock AI) The UK looks like it's straight out of Star Trek, and for some reason it's the only place that has a change in clothes. It's a huge wonder what green initiative will take place, and when, since this seems to be a recurring theme across the images. The UK has different aircrafts, which seem to match the top of some buildings. Again, pedestrians and drivers seem to share a road which does not seem like the safest option.
