American University of Sharjah to advance cloud-enabled research
American University of Sharjah (AUS) will transform its research environment and accelerate the adoption of advanced cloud technologies through a new collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Through this partnership, AWS will provide AUS with technical, infrastructural and strategic support, enabling the university to strengthen its digital foundation and expand cloud fluency across its community.
Dr. Tod Laursen, Chancellor of AUS, commented on the significance of the agreement: 'This agreement positions AUS at the forefront of cloud-powered research and academic innovation. By working closely with AWS, we are creating an ecosystem that enables our faculty and students to engage with the world's most advanced technologies and apply them to the challenges of today and tomorrow. This is a strategic investment in our academic mission, institutional capacity and regional impact.'
A key component of the agreement is the establishment of a Cloud Center of Excellence at AUS. This center will lead efforts to promote cloud adoption, develop governance frameworks and guide digital transformation initiatives across the university. Through targeted activities — including training programs, best-practice frameworks and knowledge-sharing platforms — the center will help expand internal AWS expertise and align cloud initiatives with the university's long-term strategic goals.
AWS will also provide AUS with access to its technical experts and solutions architects, offering ongoing support to help design and optimize cloud environments that serve the university's research and academic needs. The collaboration includes AWS Immersion Days focused on AWS solutions related to research workflow enhancement, data analytics, cost optimization and cloud security.
AWS-certified speakers will further engage with AUS through participation in on-campus research events. These events will highlight case studies, best practices and explore the practical application of cloud technologies in research, helping AUS scholars connect innovation with real-world impact.

Google has transferred ownership of its Agent2Agent protocol—including its specification, developer SDKs and tooling—to the Linux Foundation, ushering in a new era of open, vendor-neutral collaboration on AI agent interoperability. Google's motivation for migrating A2A to the Linux Foundation stems from concerns over fragmentation and vendor lock-in in enterprise AI ecosystems. A neutral, open-governance structure, the announcement explains, will accelerate adoption, encourage wider contributions and maintain long-term stewardship of the protocol. Mike Smith of Google noted at the summit that the protocol has been revised to allow flexible extensions and improved agent identity frameworks. Analysts predict that establishing robust standards for AI agent interoperability could pave the way for more complex, multi-agent workflows in enterprise systems. A report from Futurum Group forecasts that agent-driven automation could generate around $6 trillion of economic value by 2028, though experts caution governance and security frameworks must evolve in parallel. Academic scrutiny, however, highlights lingering security and privacy concerns. A May 2025 paper on arXiv emphasised the need for enhancements such as short‑lived tokens, consent‑driven exchanges, and tighter control mechanisms to safeguard sensitive data flows between agents. Another study from April provided a comprehensive analysis of secure implementations, recommending proactive threat modelling and structured identity governance to fortify A2A deployments. Under the Linux Foundation, A2A will benefit from established intellectual property frameworks, transparent technical working groups and community-driven decision processes, according to the Linux Foundation's press materials. The governance roadmap includes exploring standards around trustworthy identity, delegated authority, policy controls and reputational attributes that could underpin a mature, interoperable ecosystem. The protocol's practical-ready toolkit, including Python and TypeScript implementations, has already been shared via GitHub to accelerate developer engagement. The open-source community is invited to contribute, with growing participation from systems integrators, enterprise vendors and independent developers. Enterprise adoption is expected to advance steadily as major cloud and systems providers thread A2A into their AI platforms. Use cases include orchestrating task-specific agents—for example, a procurement assistant triggering financial audit agents, or compliance bots coordinating with legal review agents—without proprietary lock‑in. Nonetheless, challenges remain. Multi-stakeholder governance could slow decision cycles, and competing priorities may hamper swift feature roll-out. Yet proponents argue that the foundational benefits of open, interoperable agent ecosystems outweigh such trade‑offs in the long term. The real test will come in adoption: how effectively Linux Foundation‑hosted governance can shepherd A2A from ambitious standard to enterprise‑grade infrastructure underpinning next‑gen AI workflows.

Sharjah's rising star: American University of Sharjah achieves its highest-ever QS World University Rankings results
American University of Sharjah (AUS) has achieved its strongest performance ever in the 2026 edition of the QS World University Rankings, climbing 60 places to 272nd globally. This places AUS among the top 18 percent of ranked higher education institutions worldwide. 'Although rankings alone do not define a university, they do serve as an important external signal of the strength of its academic community, the impact of its research and the value its graduates bring to society. This year, we were pleased to have made significant gains in our overall position and across several key indicators. We are particularly proud of our continued strong performance in employer reputation and employer outcomes, both in the UAE and globally, as one of our primary goals is to ensure our graduates make a meaningful impact far beyond AUS,' notes Dr Tod A. Laursen, the Chancellor of AUS. The latest results announced by QS include marked improvements for AUS in indicators such as employer reputation, academic reputation and citations per faculty. Globally, AUS now ranks third for international faculty and fourth for international student diversity. Within the UAE, it ranks first for employer reputation and international student diversity and second for employment outcomes. AUS also retained its position among the top three universities nationally and made notable progress in academic reputation — rising from the top five to third place. Over the past year, AUS has expanded its academic portfolio by 33 percent, particularly at the graduate level, and launched six new research centers focused on globally relevant issues ranging from AI to sustainability. AUS also recently announced that starting in Fall 2025, it will introduce five new graduate programs and one undergraduate programme: a Master of Arts in Media Studies and Practice, a Master of Arts in Translation, a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering, a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering, a PhD in Management and a Bachelor of Science in Data Science — each designed in response to global needs and national development priorities. 'Since graduating from AUS, I've worked alongside peers from top universities around the world. Time and again, I've found that the quality of education and training I received at AUS puts me right on par with them, if not ahead. While AUS already attracts some of the brightest minds in the region, its latest QS rankings will likely only strengthen its appeal to top global talent looking to be part of a forward-thinking community.
