Carlos Sainz perplexed by Red Bull F1 call: ‘I don't understand why'
Spanish driver Sainz was initially without a seat for this year after Lewis Hamilton joined Ferrari, and eventually moved to Williams to partner Alex Albon.
Yet both Mercedes and Red Bull – who had second driver Sergio Perez underperforming throughout the 2024 season – opted not to pursue Sainz.
The 30-year-old was teammates with a 17-year-old Verstappen at Red Bull's sister team, Toro Rosso, in 2015 and the pair clashed as they both started on their F1 journey. Yet Sainz insisted their relationship is now cordial.
'The only thing I can say is I genuinely get on well with Max,' Sainz told The High Performance podcast.
'This is what people don't see from the outside. Like, we had a rivalry in our first year in Formula 1 in Toro Rosso, but it was a relatively healthy rivalry in terms of him and me, the way we used to go about racing. And now we get on really well.
'So, if that's the reason [Red Bull didn't sign me], I don't understand why they wouldn't want me next to Max, because I think we would actually be a very strong pairing in Formula 1.'
Perez was dropped after the 2024 season for Liam Lawson, who lasted only two races this season before being replaced by Yuki Tsunoda.
Yet Tsunoda, in his fifth F1 season, has also struggled to perform as Verstappen's teammate – a continuing trend at Red Bull.
'I think everyone's having a really tough time being Max's teammate,' Sainz added.
'I can only say that when I was Max's teammate, I didn't have this tough time.
'I was obviously incredibly surprised with how quick he was, with how he's an insane driver. I mean, he's going to go out to be one of the best ever in history, if he's not already one. But that first year together, since then, has given me the confidence to know I can be up against anyone.'
Sainz is currently 15th in the drivers' championship on 13 points, 33 points off teammate Alex Albon. The next race of the season is this weekend at Spa-Francorchamps with the Belgian Grand Prix.

England Lionesses return home after partying until 4am to celebrate Euro 2025 win
England are bringing football home again as the Lionesses begin their journey back from Euro 2025 with the trophy in hand. Sarina Wiegman's side made history by becoming the first senior England team in the men's or women's game to win a major tournament on foreign soil, and the first to successfully defend a title following their Euros triumph in 2022. The Lionesses did it the hard way, too, coming from behind in all three of their knockout matches. They were the comeback queens in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and Sunday's emotionally draining final against Spain. England were 1-0 down at half-time against the world champions following Mariona Caldentey's well-taken header. But Alessia Russo emphatically replied with a header of her own soon after the break to draw Wiegman's team level in Basel, Switzerland. After a tense ending to the 90 minutes, the Lionesses had to dig in during extra-time and take the game to penalties. Hannah Hampton's goalkeeping heroics allowed Chloe Kelly to once again score the decisive spot-kick and get the party started. England's players and staff partied long into the night, with some staying out until 4am. Champagne was gleefully guzzled until the early hours and the players had a go on karaoke. Now the Lionesses have left their hotel in Zurich and are heading back to London ahead of Tuesday's parade. There'll then be a staged ceremony at the Queen Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace. "We are so proud of all of the players, Sarina and the support team who have all been part of this incredible achievement. "The victory celebration in London on Tuesday will give England fans an opportunity to celebrate with the players, and be part of history. The summer transfer window is about to enter its final month with hundreds of millions already splashed on some major signings. Arsenal have completed the signing of Viktor Gyokeres, closing out a deal worth £63m for the forward who was unveiled as a new Gunner during their pre-season match against Newcastle on Sunday. The Gunners have also confirmed the signing of Cristhian Mosquera in defence and they now have their sights on Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze. Liverpool have signed Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt in a £79m deal having beaten off interest from Newcastle to secure his signature. Wiegman is the first manager in the men's or women's game to reach five consecutive finals in their first five major tournaments, and she is the first England manager to defend a title. The Dutch coach was described as 'priceless' by FA chief executive Mark Bullingham before the final and Wiegman said her final message to the players was a simple one. 'Well I've said a couple of things, but right before we went on the pitch, I just said, I can't use all the words I said, but the main message was enjoy it,' Wiegman said. 'We've got so far now in this tournament. I think we all created something again together. So these are the moments where you dream of , well some couldn't even dream of because it wasn't possible when they were little kids. But go out there and enjoy it and play your very best game.'
