It was just a meme – until it wasn't: How hate gets normalised
But that curiosity, multiplied across thousands of users who never speak up, creates exactly the kind of silence in which harmful content thrives. Everyone assumes they're just there to observe. And so no one challenges what's shared. No one says, 'That's not OK.' The silence grows louder, and gradually, it becomes the norm.

MP: Taman Permata Management must act on water woe
Published on: Sunday, July 06, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jul 06, 2025 By: Winnie Kasmir Text Size: Libaran MP Datuk Suhaimi Nasir SANDAKAN: Libaran MP Datuk Suhaimi Nasir has called on the management of Taman Permata to urgently resolve the ongoing water supply disruption that has persisted for more than 10 days and over 4,000 residents. He described the situation as critical and deeply concerning, particularly as it also impacts the families of naval personnel currently deployed at sea, whose wives and children are left to cope without access to clean water. Advertisement 'This is a truly heartbreaking situation. Today, we are here with Elopura assemblyman Calvin Chong and Sungai Manila assemblyman Datuk Mokran Ingkat to address the issue on the ground. I urge the housing management to resolve this matter within 48 hours,' he said. At press time, about 17 homes were still without water supply, believed due to low water pressure that prevents distribution to upper floors of the buildings. It was just a meme – until it wasn't: How hate gets normalised
MOST of us know someone who's in a WhatsApp or Telegram group that regularly shares content that's – let's be honest – a little questionable. Maybe it's your uncle forwarding a conspiracy video, a colleague dropping a misogynistic joke, or a friend scrolling through racist memes 'just for the laughs'. And when you ask why they stay in those groups, the answer is almost always the same: 'Oh, I'm not like them – I'm just curious.' But that curiosity, multiplied across thousands of users who never speak up, creates exactly the kind of silence in which harmful content thrives. Everyone assumes they're just there to observe. And so no one challenges what's shared. No one says, 'That's not OK.' The silence grows louder, and gradually, it becomes the norm.

KOTA BELUD: The Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) has at least 12 Madani Adopted Villages which have been allocated RM1 million each to implement various projects. Its Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the allocation was given directly to local leaders and relevant agencies to implement physical and non-physical projects that have an impact on their respective villages. Advertisement '.....the impact of the RM1 million allocation is immediate, fast, with no bureaucracy, for example, the installation of 40 units of solar lights (for Madani Adopted Villages),' he told reporters after officiating the KDN Madani Adopted Village Programme launching ceremony at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kampung Pangkalan Abai, here, Friday. Saifuddin Nasution said a Malaysian Volunteer Corps Department (Rela) and Neighbourhood Watch (KRT) control post was also established in Sk Pangkalan Abai Madani Adopted Village which was also assisted by villagers in security control. He said other facilities at SK Pangkalan Abai Madani Adopted Village which has about 800 residents, included the construction of a drainage system to overcome the problem of flooding along 150 metres. Apart from the installation of a 350-metre-long pipe and the purchase of a hearse, the Ministry of Home Affairs also allocated RM50,000 to the Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) of SK Pangkalan Abai. 'I think the benefits of this programme are in line with the Ministry of Home Affairs' duties,' he said, adding that the Madani Adopted Village programme has a direct impact on the people. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
