Kilauea volcano: Flight warning as rare ‘gas pistoning' phenomenon sees lava shoot 300m into air
The lava bursts are producing monster blankets of smoke and ash that are drifting for kilometres into the sky, causing aviation authorities to issue the Code: Orange warning alert for airlines flying in and out of Hawaii.
Incredible scenes are being recorded on the Big Island as the volcano's north vent spews lava fountains into the sky with such force, they are producing an uncommon phenomenon called gas-pistoning.
This is where gas accumulates beneath or within a column of lava, pushing it upwards like a piston and eventually leading to an explosive release of the gas and lava.
Expert scientists with the US Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said the latest eruption — the 25th time since last Christmas — is only the beginning of what they believe will be bigger explosions in weeks to come.
The Code: Orange alert for public and private air travel and is now in effect for companies and pilots as they prepare for more eruptions.
Aviation authorities have been monitoring the situation and travellers may soon be subjected to a temporary halt of flights if the airborne ash clouds continue to build, or if the eruption level is deemed unsafe.
Days before the latest lava burst, local geologists noted there presence of gas-pistoning.
The Volcano Observatory said this could be a precursor to a much larger event.
'Eventually, gas escapes as splatter/lava is erupted, and lava drains back into the vent,' the Observatory said.
The piston bursts became more frequent with up to 10 per hour and this then increased in intensity until a dome fountain began to feed flowing lava into the crater.
'The vigor of activity continued to increase and lava fountains from the north vent reached heights of more than 1000 feet (305 metres),' the Volcano Observatory noted.
'A small fountain, less than 50 metres high, started to erupt from the south vent. Lava fountains continued to erupt from both vents, feeding large lava flows that covered parts of Halema'uma'u crater floor,' they added.

Vogue Williams shows off her jaw-dropping figure in tiny bikini as she frolics with ripped husband Spencer Matthews and their kids in Spain
Vogue Williams showed off her incredible figure in a skimpy black and white bikini as she hit the beach in Spain with her family on Sunday. The Irish presenter, 39, looked sensational on her holiday, on which she was joined by her children, Theodore, six, Gigi, four, and Otto, three and her former Made In Chelsea star husband Spencer Matthews. Ensuring she was protected from the sun, the stunner wore a chic fedora while keeping things simple with her black and white bikini. Her taut and toned abs were on full display in the low-slung bikini bottoms while the top comprised a simple triange shape. Spencer was not to be outdone with toned physiques as he displayed his incredible abs in all their glory while emerging from the ocean with his wife. Prior to their beach trip, Vogue looked every inch the doting mother as she shared sweet family holiday pictures to Instagram earlier in the day. And she has now taken her family abroad to enjoy a sun-soaked beach holiday, with an insight into the the trip documented on her social media page. In one snap Vogue can be seen wearing a black and white two-piece as she cradled Otto, before also picking up her daughter Gigi. Meanwhile Spencer got in on the action and could be seen kissing his little girl on the cheek as the family enjoyed some downtime. Alongside her holiday post, she penned: 'I've counted down the days until we got here'. Vogue recently revealed Spencer bore the brunt of youngest child Otto's 'hitting and biting' phase during a recent trip to Legoland. She explained a subsequent trip to Legoland at Windsor Resort in Berkshire almost went awry when the infant bit his father in the groin. Recalling the painful incident during the latest instalment of Vogue & Amber - the podcast she co-hosts with her sister - she said: 'It was so random, we just went there for the day. 'It took us thirty-eight minutes to get there from our house and I thought this is a bit of me. And I kind of went off with Otto a little bit because he wasn't able to go on all of the rides that the other kids were on. 'But then he bit, you know that I've been saying he's been hitting and stuff, he bit Spenny in the crotch.' She added: 'I was just like, "Oh God, that is bad." 'We still managed to have a fantastic day, despite the biting'. Both are known for their dedication to health and fitness, especially Spencer, who turned his life around after struggling with alcohol abuse during his time on Made in Chelsea. The star also battled an addiction to steroids, the use resulted in his removal from ITV show I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! in 2015. Spencer is now the founder and Chief Business Officer of CleanCo Non-alcoholic Spirits, which he founded soon after eldest son Theo's birth. His eldest brother is married to Pippa Middleton, and his parents are the Laird and Lady of Glen Affric, a 10,000-acre estate in the Highlands of Scotland. Appearing on the latest installment of the Mail's 'The Life of Bryony' podcast, Williams recently admitted she 'thought her life was over' after divorcing Westlife singer Brian McFadden. In a candid conversation with Mail columnist Bryony Gordon, 'relationship girl' Vogue reflected on her love life ahead of turning forty. She remembered feeling as though she had 'ruined her life' in 2017 after her divorce aged 31 from Westlife singer Brian McFadden. 'I am excited at turning forty', Vogue told the podcast. 'When you are 19 or 20, you think that 40-year-olds are really old and battered. Then you actually get there and you think, this is a really nice moment. 'In your thirties, you are still trying to figure stuff out. I remember being divorced at 31 and thinking, I've ruined my life. I am never going to have kids, I am never going to do what I always wanted to do.

Renfrew man told partner to "kill herself" after drunken argument
Mark McAdam has been ordered to carry out unpaid work. A Renfrew roofer told his partner she should kill herself after they had a drunken argument. Mark McAdam admitted he caused the woman 'fear or alarm' in November last year at a flat in Paisley. The 46-year-old acted in an aggressive manner, repeatedly shouted at her and directed abusive remarks towards her. The procurator fiscal depute told Paisley Sheriff Court McAdam and the woman have been in an on/off relationship since 2010. She explained: 'On Friday, November 15, last year, the accused and the woman were together in the woman's flat. 'They both had been drinking throughout the evening. Around 11.20pm the accused became angry towards her and started an argument. The accused then shouted at her, 'why don't you commit suicide.' 'Because of his behaviour, the woman used the concierge service in her hallway and asked the concierge to call police. 'Shortly after midnight, police attended and traced the accused. He was arrested, caution and charged making no reply. He was taken to Greenock police station where he was later released on an undertaking. 'CCTV footage from the incident was observed which showed the woman in a distressed state and wiping tears from her eyes.' Sheriff Eoin McGinty asked defence agent Stephen Graham if McAdam was working as a roofer as outlined in the background report prepared by social workers. Mr Graham confirmed that was correct. Sheriff McGinty stated: 'He is a roofer and has expressed strongly that he won't undertake unpaid work. He's not in a sweetshop, he doesn't get to pick and choose what happens here today. 'He told the writer of this report he wouldn't give his consent to do unpaid work and that only leaves one single option for me.' Mr Graham told the court McAdam had 'reservations' about doing unpaid work due to it affecting his ability to carry out his paid employment. He added: 'My submission is for the court to impose a restriction of liberty order assessment, but he accepts if you find a community payback order more suitable, he will comply.' McAdam, of Paisley Road, was ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work in the community and made subject to supervision of the social work department for 12 months. Sheriff McGinty added: 'Ordinarily, I'd let these run but given you've voiced considerable reservations, I'm going to fix a review hearing in two months to ensure you are doing the order.' A review hearing was assigned for September 1.

‘His contribution was immense': Tributes paid after death of former Glentoran and Northern Ireland physio
Widespread tributes have been paid following the passing of a 'gentleman' former Irish League physio who also worked with the Northern Ireland football team. News of George Magill's death was confirmed this morning, with tributes led by Glentoran – the club Mr Magill both supported and worked for across a number of decades. In a tribute on social media, the east Belfast club said they were 'deeply saddened' and added that he had 'served the Glens with distinction' including during 'our iconic 1987/88 double-winning season, before retiring in 2015'. The club's chairman Colin Jess highlighted Mr Magill's 'immense' legacy across football in Northern Ireland. 'George was a gentleman and a hugely valued member of the Glentoran family,' he said. "His contribution to this club, and to football in Northern Ireland, was immense. We send our sincere condolences to Dorothy and the wider Magill family at this very sad time.' Mr Magill – who celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary with his wife Dorothy a number of weeks ago – worked at a number of other clubs in local football, including Larne, Carrick, Bangor and Portadown. Larne chairman Gareth Clements wrote on social media: 'Deeply saddened to learn of the passing of George Magill. "I got to know George at Larne Football Club in the very early eighties, and our paths crossed many times down the years, none moreso than during his time at Glentoran, where I was honoured to prepare the buffet to mark his retirement in 2015 after fifty one years service to local and international football. "Rest in peace my friend.' The Open at Royal Portrush: What happened in 2019? Mr Magill's nephew also paid his own tribute online, writing about his uncle on the Northern Ireland Football Museum page: 'Terrible news this morning with the passing of my uncle, George Magill. "Just a couple of weeks ago George & Dorothy celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary 'George was well known and respected right across Irish football. As well as being physio for the Northern Ireland international team and the Irish League representative teams, George helped out at most clubs in the league. 'Bangor, Ballymena, Carrick, Portadown, Larne and no doubt a few I have missed, but it was with his beloved Glentoran where he spent most of his career. 'Right up until his health issues over the last couple of years, George continued with his physio clinic. Although it's never nice getting an injury or ailment, I always loved going to Uncle George for treatment as you could guarantee that the treatment room would be full of Irish League superstars!'
