DPR prepared for Central University's Tiruchi campus
The central university, which was established under the Central Universities Act, came into being in September 2009. It functions on 500 acres of land at Neelakudi on the outskirts of Tiruvarur. Taking into account the fact that many central universities have one or more campuses, in addition to their main campus, the CUTN proposed to set up a satellite campus in Tiruchi, which is well connected by air, road, and rail. It has identified five acres of land at Suriyur near the Bharathidasan University.
According to sources, the State government has fixed ₹3 crore as cost of the land. The CUTN is said to have initiated the process of taking control of the land from the Revenue Department by paying the cost.
As per the DPR, which has formulated a plan to construct classroom buildings, guest, staff quarters and other basic infrastructure, it will cost about ₹23 crore.
M. Krishnan, Vice-Chancellor of the CUTN, told The Hindu that a meeting had been scheduled on July 30 in New Delhi to finalise the budget for the project. Once the allocation of funds was finalised, all other steps, including floating of tender, would be taken.
The new campus would enable the university to improve student intake as Tiruchi was well connected by air, he said and added that it could conduct conferences, seminars, and so on by attracting experts from different parts of the country, the Vice-Chancellor said.

Plan to increase Poondi reservoir's storage capacity pending for four years
CHENNAI: The Water Resources Department's (WRD) proposal to raise the water storage capacity of Sathyamoorthy Sagar reservoir, also known as the Poondi reservoir, has been pending for the past four years despite preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR). The department had planned to increase the Full Reservoir Level (FRL) by two feet – from the present 35 feet to 37 feet. This move, which would help increase the reservoir's storage from 3.231 tmcft to 3.971 tmcft, adding an extra 0.74 tmcft of water continues to remain on paper till now. Locals claim that besides increasing drinking water sources for the city, the project is also expected to mitigate flooding risks in a few villages located close to the reservoir. Speaking to TNIE, a senior WRD official said the DPR prepared last year estimated the project to cost Rs 552.60 crore. However, the report has still not been taken up with the state government since it is still under the consideration of the WRD. The official said that feasibility studies have already been done at a cost of Rs 48 lakh for the project. 'Work of surveying the existing ground level for the entire existing embankment, proposed foreshore bund area and reserved forest area adjoining the reservoir are completed. Once we get approval from the finance department, we submit the DPR and execute the task immediately,' the official added.

Neyyar project to cap water woes in city remains in limbo
T'puram: The proposed Neyyar drinking water project, aimed at addressing the city's water woes, remains in limbo due to the apathy of the officials concerned of Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) and Kerala Water Authority (KWA) in submitting a detailed project report (DPR) on time. Several parts of Kazhakkoottam, Vizhinjam, Venganoor, Manavila, Technopark and Powdikonam are now facing a severe shortage of water. The city needs over 400 MLD of water per day, but the existing plants produce less than 320 MLD per day. KWA officials informed that the delay in implementing the project would leave the city dwellers without water in the imminent future, as there was no alternative source in place. "For the implementation of the project, we may need at least five years. But KIIFB has not even responded to us when asked for updates on the progress of DPR," said a KWA official. Owing to the indifferent approach of KIIFB, the water authority constituted a five-member team to prepare DPR on its own. The team comprises four overseers and an assistant engineer and the plan is to submit the DPR before the govt in two years to obtain the necessary sanctions. "A request was given to KIIFB to share the reports on the studies which were conducted for the project. We will incorporate them in the DPR being prepared by us," the official said. KWA also decided not to cooperate with RITES, agency appointed by KIIFB two years ago for preparing DPR. At an estimated cost of Rs 680 crore, KWA was tasked with the construction of a 120 MLD plant at Neyyar, water tanks, allied facilities and a 23.8km transmission line from Neyyar to the city. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now RITES recommended building a new road from Kattakada to PTP Nagar, an 8km distance, to lay pipes for the transmission line and the road can be used for vehicular movement as well to ease traffic. The new road was recommended to be built at an 8m width from Kattakada to PTP Nagar via Malayinkeezhu, Peyad and Kundamankadavu. The plant costs Rs 90 crore and the remaining amount has to be spent on the transmission line and other allied facilities. City Residents Associations coordinator Sumesh Krishnan opined that much of the water was lost through leakage, and KWA was unable to identify spots where leaks occur. "Leakage, coupled with a lack of enough water in existing sources, leaves many parts of the city without water for days," said Sumesh.
