No Deepika Padukone didn't buy her Hollywood Walk of Fame Star, here's is the full nomination process

Indian Express18 hours ago
Deepika Padukone made history as the only Indian cinema personality to be honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She joined names like Miley Cyrus, Josh Groban, Lyle Lovett, and others on the coveted list this year. As always, the announcement reignited the age-old rumour mill that celebs just throw money to buy the honour. But as Variety reports, this isn't new, the organisers say they get flooded with emails every year asking, 'Why don't they already have a star?' or 'Can someone just buy it?'
'You cannot just buy a star. People don't understand that there's a process. They think if they have money, it can be bought — and that's not the way it works,' the Walk of Fame producer told the outlet earlier. So, what is the process? Who actually qualifies?

In simpler terms, the Hollywood Walk of Fame marks a major win in the entertainment world. But those who make it to that sidewalk don't just show up, there's a process, and it's stricter than most think. The stretch runs across 15 blocks of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street, with over 2,800 brass-and-terracotta stars permanently installed since 1960. It features names of actors, musicians, producers, directors, and more.
As for who qualifies, stars are handed out across five categories: Motion Pictures, Television, Radio, Recording, and Live Theatre/Performance.
To qualify, the person must have at least five years of solid work in the industry. They've got to be widely known, and not just in their country, but globally. There also needs to be proof they're active in philanthropic or charity work. The nominee (or their representative) must agree to attend the unveiling ceremony. And if it's a posthumous nomination, they need to have been gone for at least two years.

Anyone can file a nomination, be it friends, fans, managers, or sponsors. There's a $275 application fee, as per the official website. Consent is mandatory. The nominee has to sign off for the application to move forward. Every June, the Walk of Fame Committee goes through nearly 200 submissions. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then filters and approves the nominations, picking around 20 to 30 names each year based on career merit, public goodwill, and overall impact. Once that's done, a sponsor, usually a studio, a brand, or even a fan group, has to foot the bill for the star, which currently costs between $75,000 and $85,000. That's where most of the confusion starts. People assume celebs are buying their way in. But the truth is that money goes to the Hollywood Historic Trust, a nonprofit that maintains the Walk, handles repairs, and keeps the street in shape.
So far, there are over 2,800 stars embedded in its sidewalks. While getting the star doesn't exactly change one's career, it's seen as a lifetime achievement. These stars have become one of the top tourist spots in Los Angeles. Every year, thousands of fans from around the globe flock to the scene to get their photo clicked alongside their favourite names. From the first official star granted to director Stanley Kramer in 1960 to the modern-day ceremonies watched by fans worldwide, it remains one of the most iconic events of the cinema.

'You Don't Get To Decide Who's A Doc': Vidit Gujrathi Claps Back At Social Media User

Last Updated: Gujrathi hit back at a social media user who claimed that none of the GM's family members were truly doctors after the 30-year-old shared a post wishing his kin on doctor's day. Indian GM Vidit Gujrathi clapped back at a social media user who claimed that none of the chess players' family members were truly doctors after the 30-year-old shared a post wishing his kin on doctors' day. Gujrathi's father is an ayurvedic migraine specialist, and his mother is a cosmetologist. His sister is a physiotherapist while his wife has an MD in homeopathy. 'Happy Doctor's day to my entire family," Gujrathi's initial post read. A social media user claimed that, 'I am sorry but none of them are really doctors." 'Your entire brand and personality is built on insulting others. While you chase retweets by tearing people down, my family quietly heals lives without needing a spotlight. They've helped more people than your ego can count. Stay in your lane. And for a change, try being useful," the Chess player hit back. Your entire brand and personality is built on insulting you chase retweets by tearing people down, my family quietly heals lives without needing a helped more people than your ego can in your lane. And for a change, try being useful. — Vidit Gujrathi (@viditchess) July 3, 2025 The user, 'TheLiverDoc', who is a Hepatologist, responded to Gujrathi in an attempt to clarify his comments with a lengthy post that read, 'Hello, Vidit. I am not a fan of chess, but you are an important person for our country and I did not mean to offend your family. I am sure they are good people. I was stating plain facts from a professional standpoint and I do not mince my words. You may call that ego or whatever, to console yourself, no problem." 'Your statement on Doctors Day claiming an Ayurveda practitioner, Homeopath, Cosmetologist and a Physiotherapist were doctors is wrong and I stand by my words. Doctors' Day in India marks both the birth and death anniversary of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, one of India's most revered physicians and a key figure in shaping the healthcare system," the update continued. 'Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Cosmetology or Physiotherapy are not realistic clinical medicine or and their practitioners are not clinical physicians. Physiotherapy is a legit branch of healthcare (adjunct to clinical medicine), but the rest are just plain sham – especially Homeopathy, which is also known as N*zi Medicine because H*tler tried to integrate it with conventional medicine at the time." 'You got all worked up and started personally attacking me because you were ignorant of this fact. I do not need to keep an ego towards a chess GM or his family. You don't make me insecure and your family is of no concern to me from a professional standpoint," he added. 'But what you claim them to be – has major public health consequence, because someone of your stature, being ignorant about science and health affects public perception of realistic healthcare and pseudoscientific practices," the user's post read. 'Your statements normalize pseudoscience and primitive therapies as healthcare practices when they are not. They are alternative medicine. And alternative medicine is medicine that is not proven to work. Just like there is no alternative chemistry, alternative physics or alternative mathematics, alternative medicine is also not medicine. And its practitioners are not doctors," he clarified. 'I am a certified internist with a doctorate in hepatology and liver transplant medicine with 260 peer reviewed scientific publications, 4400 citations and h-index of 30 (just for your information). You don't know me and how useful I am to my patients and their families. I suggest you do a bit of homework before throwing such childish tantrums." 'I am staying in my lane and always have. Calling out medical misinformation is what I do apart from being a full-time doctor. I suggest you stay in your lane and discuss more on chess. Sorry for the checkmate. And for a change, talk about chess and try being useful. All the best for your future matches," the user concluded. Gujrathi responded to the user with a post that read, 'I made a simple post out of gratitude. I chose silence at first, because not every conversation deserves a response. But when it turned into mocking my family, I stepped in. If that means stepping out of my lane, so be it." You have no authority to define others lives or dismiss their work. I've said my part. Now, back to what actually matters. No time for noise," the GM added. tags : Chess India Vidit Gujrathi Location : New Delhi, India, India First Published: July 04, 2025, 09:02 IST News sports 'You Don't Get To Decide Who's A Doc': Vidit Gujrathi Claps Back At Social Media User

What is Arijit Singh's net worth as he beats Taylor Swift and BTS in the race for most followed singer on Spotify?

Arijit Singh , one of India's most beloved musical talents, has officially claimed the top spot on Spotify 's global popularity chart. According to Spotify's recent data, Singh is now the most-followed artist on the platform, surpassing internationally acclaimed performers such as Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Billie Eilish, The Weeknd, and BTS. This is not the first time the Indian vocalist has reached this milestone—2025 marks the third instance that Singh has climbed to the pinnacle of Spotify's follower rankings. As of July 1, 2025, Arijit Singh has amassed an incredible 151 million followers on Spotify. In comparison, Taylor Swift—long considered a dominant force in the global music landscape—stands second with 139 million followers. Other major figures include Ed Sheeran with 121 million, Billie Eilish with 114 million, and The Weeknd with 107.2 million. The revered K-pop band BTS currently has 80 million followers. Notably, Arijit's consistent climb has been especially significant given that Spotify only launched in India in 2019. Musical Mastery Backed by National and Global Acclaim Arijit Singh's unmatched vocal range and emotional depth have made him a staple in Indian households for over a decade. His versatility extends beyond singing—he's also a composer, music producer, and National Award recipient. His classic numbers like 'Tum Hi Ho' 'Kesariya,' and 'Tum Kya Mile' continue to dominate playlists globally. In 2024, his newer releases, including 'Dhun' from Saiyara and 'Jaane Tu' from Chhaava (featuring Vicky Kaushal), cemented his status as a streaming heavyweight. Arijit's Spotify surge is not just a personal victory but a milestone for Indian music 's reach on the global stage. The achievement becomes even more striking considering how late India entered the streaming platform market compared to the West. AR Rahman and Diljit Dosanjh Also Shine Internationally While Arijit leads the charts, legendary music composer A.R. Rahman also finds himself among the top 20 most-followed artists on Spotify with 49 million followers. Another artist making waves internationally is Punjabi star Diljit Dosanjh, who now boasts nearly 33 million Spotify followers and continues to attract a devoted global audience. Arijit's recent collaboration with Ed Sheeran for their track 'Sapphire' marked a high-profile Indo-Western fusion that gained massive attention. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift's 2024 release, The Tortured Poets Department and her record-breaking Eras Tour, which grossed an astounding $2 billion in ticket sales, kept her in the headlines. Billie Eilish also impressed fans with her third studio album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, following her Academy Award win. India's Highest-Paid Singer Keeps Things Low-Key Despite his massive fame and success, Arijit Singh is known for maintaining a low public profile. According to a report from the singer commands a fee of ₹14 crore for a two-hour live concert, putting him among the highest-paid musicians not only in India but across the globe. Singer and television personality Rahul Vaidya highlighted this staggering figure in a recent interview, emphasizing Singh's down-to-earth nature despite his enormous fame. In terms of financial status, Singh's reported net worth stands at ₹414 crore. He resides in a lavish ₹8 crore home in Navi Mumbai, owns luxury vehicles worth over ₹3.4 crore—including brands like Range Rover and Mercedes—and endorses major names like Coca-Cola and Samsung. Yet, he remains refreshingly grounded, steering clear of showbiz glamour whenever possible.
