Wild animal menace: Karshaka Congress workers take out march to Thamarassery forest office

The Hindu10 hours ago
Seeking more field-level actions to counter the wild animal menace, Karshaka Congress activists led by its State president Majoosh Mathews took out a march to the Thamarassery Forest Range office on Monday (July 28).
The protesters who locked horns with the police and crossed the barricade alleged that upland farmers were facing a huge crisis, thanks to poor measures in place to mitigate human-animal conflict.
They also alleged that the affected farmers were not even getting reasonable compensation for crop loss. Vehicular traffic on the State highway was blocked for over half an hour as the agitators burnt Forest Minister A.K. Saseendran in effigy.
The Thamarassery police said they had booked 11 protesters who spearheaded the agitation, which led to damage to public properties worth ₹18,000. They were charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Kerala Police Act - 2011, and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act - 1984, the police said.

Two, including US national, held for trying to convert people by offering financial help

Pune: Two men — a 41-year-old US national and a Pimpri resident — were arrested on Sunday night on the charge of trying to convert people by offering financial help. Sachin Hire, assistant commissioner of the Pimpri Chinchwad police, said the US national, Schaefer Javin Jacob of California, currently residing at Mukai Chowk in Kiwale, and Steven Kadam (46) of Ajmera Pimpri were charged under sections 299 (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The US national was also booked under the relevant sections of the Foreigners Act for violating visa norms. "We also detained a 16-year-old boy with the duo and handed him over to his mother," Hire said. Inspector Vijayanand Patil of the Pimpri police said the trio on Sunday morning went to the complainant's house and told him that he would get "happiness, peace, wealth, and good mental health" if he converted from his religion. "They also assured him of financial assistance in future after his conversion," Patil said. "To avoid any untoward incident, our team reached Ajmera in Pimpri and took the trio into custody. We informed their minor accomplice's mother and handed him over to her," he said. Patil said the investigations revealed that the US national Jacob came to India on a business visa. "Jacob has been visiting the country since 2016 on business and tourist visas. He claimed that he came to India for business purposes. We, however, did not find him doing any business here. Our investigations are on," Patil said. The officer said the Ajmera resident Kadam works in a private company. "Jacob and Kadam met during a prayer session. They have been remanded in police custody for two days," he said.

2019 anti-CAA stir: HC seeks police reply on Tanha's plea

The Delhi High Court on Monday sought a reply from the police on a plea filed by student activist Asif Iqbal Tanha challenging the framing of charges against him in a case of violence during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in 2019 in south Delhi's Jamia Nagar. The court posted the next hearing for October 30. In March, a trial court had framed charges against Mr. Tanha and 10 others, observing that they had 'committed abetment by prior conspiracy as well as by instigating violent mob activity at the spot'. He has been charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, and the Arms Act. The trial court in March framed charges, observing Imam's December 13, 2019 speech near the Jamia University as a 'venomous', 'pitted one religion against another' and was 'indeed a hate speech'. It framed charges against Imam, Tanha and nine others, stating 'accused Ashu Khan, Chandan Kumar and Aasif Iqbal Tanha committed abetment by prior conspiracy as well as by instigating violent mob activity at the spot, for which penal provision of Section 109 (abetment) of the IPC is justifiably invoked against them.' Section 109 deals with abetment of an offence and attracts the same punishment given to the offender. The case stems from the 2019-20 protests at Jamia Millia Islamia and Shaheen Bagh after the passage of CAA in Parliament on December 11, 2019.
