Thane:
Police detained local MNS leader Avinash Jadhav early on Tuesday ahead of a rally planned in Thane to counter a protest staged by traders against the slapping of a food stall owner for not speaking in Marathi, officials said.
The rally, proposed by the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti in Mira Bhayander area of Maharashtra's Thane district later on Tuesday, has not been given permission by police, they said.
The police on Monday issued orders restraining the entry of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena's (MNS) Thane and Palghar head Jadhav, who was supposed to participate in the rally, in Mira Bhayander area.
He was detained from his house in Thane at around 3.30 am, an official from Thane police control room said.
The Raj Thackeray-led MNS also posted a video of his detention on social media.
Security was stepped up in Mira Bhayander area in light of the proposed rally, which has been prohibited by police, officials said.
A food stall owner in Bhayander area was slapped by some MNS activists last week for not speaking in Marathi.
Seven members of the MNS were later detained and allowed to go after the police served notices on them.
Traders in Bhayander area had staged a protest, demanding action against those who assaulted the food stall owner.

Devendra Fadnavis to inaugurate Kusumagaraj Marathi language centre; lay foundation stone of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj special centre

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and other ministers of the Maharashtra cabinet will be in JNU on Thursday evening to inaugurate the Kusumagraj Special Centre for Marathi Language, Literature and Culture. The language centre has been named after renowned poet and Jnanpith awardee Kusumagraj, and will focus on Marathi language, literature and cultural traditions. The Chief Minister will also lay the foundation stone for the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Special Centre for Security and Strategic Studies, which will be under the School of International Studies. It will explore indigenous strategic traditions based on the Maratha empire. The centre is envisioned to become a hub for military history, strategy and future policy development rooted in India's past. The Kusumagraj centre will offer postgraduate and certificate-level programmes to promote multilingualism and cultural understanding. 'It will offer MA in Marathi and certificate courses to go with the NEP for non-Marathi speakers like those who speak Tamil. A lot of students from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have opted for Tamil and there are many who speak Tamil whenever we have functions. This is encouraging because this will unite India and make people more sensitive to other languages of the country. The present state government is giving importance to Marathi, which has been declared by the Centre as one of the classical languages, also because Marathi is a language of great repute and know for its literature,' JNU's VC Santishree Pandit told reporters recently. The State government has announced the funds of ₹10 Crore for each centre. The Marathi centre was first announced in the year 2007 by then Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. Maharashtra government wants to construct an equestrian statue of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj inside the campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University. 'We have held preliminary talks with the Vice Chancellor of the University. She is positive about it. A statue of our most revered king in the renowned university will mean spreading the importance of his valour and about Maratha history on a national platform which is holds such a key position in the academic world,' Maharashtra minister Uday Samant told The Hindu. 'We have sought land from JNU for the project. Once the land is allotted, the State government will construct the statue in the campus. There is an in-principle approval for the State government's proposal,' Mr Samant said.

Dombivli clinic case takes 'U-turn': Receptionist caught hitting accused's relative first; ‘migrant vs Marathi' debate flares up

NEW DELHI: A new twist has emerged in the case of the assault on a woman receptionist at a private paediatrics hospital in Maharashtra's Thane district, after a video surfaced showing her striking the accused man's female relative first, police said on Wednesday. Earlier, a viral video showed the accused, Gokul Jha, kicking the receptionist and dragging her by her hair across the reception floor of the hospital in Kalyan on Monday evening. He allegedly attacked her after she refused to let him enter the doctor's chamber without an appointment. Jha was arrested by police on Tuesday in connection with the assault. However, a new video now shows that the receptionist may have initiated the confrontation by hitting Jha's sister-in-law shortly before Jha launched his attack on her. The incident occurred at Shree Bal Chikitsalaya in the Kalyan East area on Monday evening. After the assault, Jha fled the scene and attempted to change his appearance by shaving his beard and trimming his hair. He was later apprehended by locals on Tuesday and handed over to the police, an official said. Based on the complaint filed by the receptionist, the Manpada police registered a case against Jha under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for assault, use of obscene language, and outraging the modesty of a woman. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo While Jha was absconding, police detained his brother Ranjit and other relatives who were present at the hospital at the time of the incident, the official added. The receptionist reportedly sustained critical injuries and is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dombivli. On Wednesday, the Kalyan District and Sessions Court remanded Jha in police custody for two days. According to police, Jha had visited the hospital along with his wife, sister-in-law, and a child for a consultation. The receptionist asked them to wait as the doctor was engaged with a representative from a pharmaceutical company. An argument reportedly broke out between the receptionist and the Jha family over the sequence of patient admissions. During the exchange, the receptionist allegedly struck Jha's sister-in-law on the earlobe. Enraged upon learning about the incident, Jha rushed into the reception area and assaulted her. The emergence of the new video showing the receptionist hitting a member of the Jha family has complicated the investigation further. When asked about the development, a senior official from Manpada police station said, "Investigation into the case is still underway and based on the evidence, further action will be taken." Meanwhile, the case has taken on a political dimension, being framed as a 'migrants versus Marathi' issue, with several political leaders demanding stringent action against Jha. Speaking to reporters before Jha's arrest, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena's Thane and Palghar districts chief Avinash Jadhav said, "A migrant has beaten up a Marathi woman. We urge the police to take stringent action against him and arrest him." BJP state president Ravindra Chavan met with Deputy Commissioner of Police Atul Zende late Tuesday night and pressed for swift action. Shiv Sena's district president Dipesh Mhatre and local MNS leader Raju Patil also called for strict action by the police in the matter. (With agency inputs)

‘It was consensual': Court gives teacher, 40, bail over sexual relationship with 16-year-old boy

The 40-year-old female teacher of a prominent Mumbai school who was booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for engaging in sexual activity with one of her students, was granted bail on the grounds that the boy was over 16 years of age, and evidence shows there was a 'consensual relationship subsequently.' In her bail plea, accused teacher said the boy was emotionally attached to her and referred to her as his 'wife'.(Unsplash/representational) As reported earlier by HT, the teacher had been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting the minor student on multiple occasions for over a year and for allegedly luring him to five-star hotels, plying him with alcohol and then engaging in sex with him. She was arrested last month after the boy's family complained to the police. In a detailed order, the special court for cases under POCSO Act noted that the accused's resignation from the school last year — during which the alleged sexual assaults took place — had diluted the 'student-teacher dynamic.' Special judge Sabina Malik also said the trial will take time to commence, so keeping the woman behind bars would not serve any purpose. The court granted the woman bail after considering that she is the mother of two minor children. 'He has a tattoo of my name' The accused has denied all the allegations, claiming the FIR was 'motivated' and filed at the insistence of the boy's mother who disapproved of their relationship. In her bail plea, she stated that the boy was emotionally attached to her and referred to her as his 'wife'. She also claimed that he had sent her affectionate messages and handwritten notes, and had a tattoo of her name on his body, adding that these facts were deliberately omitted from the police complaint. The teacher also claimed that she had resigned from the school in April 2024 to distance herself from the boy and insisted that she would only meet him with his mother's permission. However, he continued to contact her, she alleged. According to the FIR, from January 2024 to February 2025, the woman had sex with the boy at various five-star hotels and also in her car. She allegedly also gave him alcohol and medication for anxiety, and used a female colleague to persuade him to meet her. She then resigned from the school last year after the boy passed Class 11. 'Made to sign document in Marathi, did not understand' In the bail order, the court noted, 'As the accused had resigned from the school, the relationship of a teacher and student no longer existed and, hence, the influence was diluted.' The court also took note of the accused's contention that the police had provided the grounds of her arrest to her in Marathi, a language she does not understand, and that she was made to sign the documents without a translation. The court recorded this as part of its reasoning while noting improper compliance with arrest procedures under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS). In her bail plea, the accused pointed to her responsibilities as a single mother of 11-year-old twins — one of whom suffers from a respiratory condition — as grounds for leniency. She submitted her daughter's medical records and argued that her incarceration was affecting the children's education and mental health. Opposing bail, both the prosecution and the complainant cited trauma, threats, and concerns over tampering with evidence. However, the court said these risks could be addressed through strict bail conditions. 'The potential risk to the victim, if any, could be catered to by imposing necessary terms and conditions,' the court order stated, while also warning that 'breach of any condition will amount to cancellation of bail'. The teacher was granted bail on furnishing a personal bond of ₹50,000, with one or more solvent sureties of the same amount. She was directed not to contact the victim or witnesses, tamper with evidence, or leave Mumbai without the court's permission. (Reported by Vikrant Jha)
