Over 2,000 expected at Sikh parade in New Brunswick despite safety concerns

An annual Sikh parade in Moncton, New Brunswick, has received official permission to proceed after concerns were raised online about traffic and public safety. The event, organized by the Maritime Sikh Society , is set to take place on May 11 outside of Moncton. It marks the fifth year of the religious procession, named 'Nagar Kirtan,' celebrated by the Sikh community.Earlier this week, social media posts questioned whether the rural area had the capacity to safely host such a large event. Concerns were mainly due to road closures and the ability of emergency services to respond during the parade. The department approved the necessary road closure permit after discussions with organizers and local authorities.Sukhwinder Singh, a representative of the Maritime Sikh Society, said they had been working closely with officials from the beginning. 'We had proper traffic control plans in place, with volunteers and safety officers ready,' he said. He said that while cultural celebrations are welcome, public safety must always come first. 'When concerns are raised, it's our duty to look into them seriously,' he said.The event is expected to draw more than 2000 people across the region. Organizers say they are committed to holding a safe and respectful celebration.

Ahead of I-Day celebrations, Delhi Police chief reviews security arrangements
NEW DELHI: Newly appointed Delhi Police Commissioner SBK Singh on Friday held a series of meetings with senior officers to assess the security arrangements in the national capital ahead of Independence Day, officials said on Friday. Singh, who took over as the 25th Delhi Police Commissioner, focused on the city's readiness for the major event at the Red Fort. According to officials, Singh emphasised the need for heightened vigilance, increased patrolling and enhanced surveillance measures in sensitive areas. In addition to security preparations, a crime review meeting was held with the city's 15 deputy commissioners of police (DCPs). The discussions centered on law and order across the capital. All DCPs were directed to strengthen night patrolling, tighten barricades, and implement stricter checks at major entry points, officials said. Singh directed that strict checking should be carried out at hotels, guest houses, bus terminals, railway stations, metro stations, malls and high-footfall markets. A senior police officer, requesting anonymity, said that Singh also stressed the need for plainclothes personnel to monitor public spaces discreetly for suspicious activities. 'The Commissioner highlighted the importance of inter-agency coordination and the timely sharing of intelligence in the broader security framework. Reviewing preparations for the Red Fort and other key venues, he instructed senior officers to personally oversee security drills and ensure the deployment of quick reaction teams, bomb disposal units, and sniffer dogs,' the officer added. SBK Singh, previously the Director General of Home Guards, replaced Sanjay Arora, who retired on Thursday. An alumnus of St. Stephen's College, the commissioner has had a distinguished 36-year career, investigating high-profile cases such as the Uphaar fire and the Ponty Chaddha murder, and serving in key roles across Delhi Police, the Research & Analysis Wing, and other state police forces.

BFI polls on Aug 21; former Indian sports minister Anurag Thakur to contest
Anurag Thakur (PTI Photo) NEW DELHI: The Boxing Federation of India's (BFI) interim committee has announced elections for the sport's national federation on Aug 21 in Delhi-NCR. The process faces certain challenges. The officebearers' term ended on Feb 2 this year, and efforts to hold elections by March 28 were thwarted by BFI factions that contested a March 7 order issued by former president Ajay Singh in the Delhi and Himachal high courts. Since then, an interim panel headed by Singh, established under the direction of World Boxing (WB), has been managing the federation's daily operations. BFI's constituent members argue that the Singh-led committee lacks the authority to call for elections, as it merely oversees boxing affairs. Additionally, detractors claim that Singh's initiative to hold elections under the World Boxing constitution is unjustified. They assert that the BFI's amended constitution, aligned with the global body's rules and regulations, must first be ratified by the federation's Executive Committee (EC) or in a general house meeting before formal adoption. Last month, the sports ministry empowered the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to investigate the delay in conducting elections and to 'suggest a clear roadmap for holding elections in a fair and timely manner'. Meanwhile, former sports minister Anurag Thakur , nominated by Himachal Pradesh Boxing as its representative in March but excluded from the previous electoral college, will contest the elections against Singh, sources confirmed. Thakur's name, along with that of north zone vicepresident Rajesh Bhandari, will be forwarded as Himachal Boxing's two representatives attending the AGM on Aug 21. No formal discussions held yet: Centre on U.S. F-35 jets query in Lok Sabha
The joint statement following the meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with President Donald Trump in February mentions that the U.S. will undertake a "review" of its policy on releasing fifth-generation fighter jets such as the F-35 and undersea systems to India and "no formal discussions" have been held as yet on this issue, the government said on Friday (August 1, 2025). The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) was asked whether any "official proposal" was received from the U.S. regarding the potential sale of F-35 fighter jets to India following the announcement by the U.S. President in February. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh in a written response to the query told Lok Sabha that the India-U.S. joint statement following the Modi-Trump meeting on February 13 "mentions that the U.S. will undertake a review of its policy on releasing fifth generation fighters [such as the F-35] and undersea systems to India. No formal discussions have been held as yet on this issue." The MEA was also asked about the role of American diplomats to stop hostilities between India and Pakistan; and whether the government has reviewed the relationship between U.S. military assistance proposals and autonomy in terms of India's foreign policy in view of the strategic implication especially in a conflict scenario involving third-party mediation. Mr. Singh in his response said, between April 22, when the Pahalgam terrorist attack happened and May 10, there were "a number of diplomatic conversations" with various countries at different levels, including with the U.S. "All our interlocutors were given a common message that India's approach was focused, measured and non-escalatory," he said. "With specific reference to the United States, it was conveyed to Vice President J. D. Vance on May 9 that India would appropriately respond if Pakistan launched a major attack. The discussion to cease military action took place directly between India and Pakistan through the existing channels of communication between the two-armed forces, and it was initiated at Pakistan's request," Mr. Singh added. As regards any proposal for third party mediation, our longstanding position remains that any outstanding issue with Pakistan will be discussed "only bilaterally". This has been made clear to all nations, including by the Prime Minister to the U.S. President, the Minister said. "The India-U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership is anchored in mutual trust, shared interests, goodwill and robust engagement between our citizens. The partnership has also benefited from growing strategic convergence and cooperation," he added. "The Government of India closely evaluates all its external partnerships, including those in the defence and strategic domains, through the prism of India's national interest and commitment to strategic autonomy," Mr. Singh said.
