Louth girls ready for kick-off as they chase Gaynor Cup glory in top Limerick tournament

The academy's 2011 squad (under-14s) are testing themselves against elite teams from across the country in Ireland's premier underage football tournament, which takes place at the University of Limerick.
The Louth girls' group campaign kicks off against Kilkenny this Monday at 6pm, followed by a double header tomorrow as they take on Mayo at noon and Tipperary South at 6pm. All teams in the competition then progress to the various knockout matches which run from Wednesday until Friday, with a Cup, Shield, Bowl and Trophy all up for grabs.
Louth's campaign officially kicked off last Thursday with a special Gaynor Cup launch night at the Monasterboice Inn, to mark the beginning of what promises to be a thrilling journey through the iconic national tournament.
To celebrate their selection, each squad member was presented with their official squad number and kit, whilst the coaching staff overseeing the trip were introduced.
Head coach and LSGL chairperson Robbie Corr said: 'The Gaynor Cup is the pinnacle of U14 girls' football in Ireland, and our squad is full of talent, ambition and pride in representing Louth.'
'Everyone at the LSGL would like to thank all our sponsors for supporting the squad as they head to such a prestigious tournament. We hope the girls enjoy a brilliant and memorable tournament and we wish them the best of luck.'
Mick Neville, FAI regional development officer for Co Louth, said: 'This is more than football. It's about teamwork, opportunity and inspiring the next generation of female athletes.'

The ban on Ireland players moving abroad is out of date and self-defeating

IRFU Performance Director David Humphreys is adamant the IRFU will not be granting permission to any players of interest to the Ireland international side to play abroad any time who move to play in another jurisdiction are and will remain automatically ruled out of at a time when double-World Cup winning Rassie Erasmus, who was all too familiar with the Ireland rule from his time at Munster, opened up Springbok selection on returning to South on the back of former Ireland coach Joe Schmidt, who also had first-hand knowledge of the Ireland system, having just opened up selection from foreign clubs for while slashing the Mens and Womens Sevens programmes, putting circa 30 athletes out of their full-time jobs - to make a saving of € while, for example, Leinster have 12 Lions, 12 touring with Ireland this summer, three front line foreigners, three significant players on the injury list and seven U20s starting against Georgia this is the log-jam when the province is at 'full-strength' it doesn't have first team jerseys for 2025 Six Nations stars such as Jimmy O'Brien, Jamie Osborn, Ciaran Frawley, Jack Boyle, Ronan Kelleher, Gus McCarthy, Thomas Clarkson, Ryan 2025 Ireland A internationals Tommy O'Brien, Max Deegan, Stephen Smith, Alex Soroka, Fintan Gunne and Harry in the interest of bringing through young talent, the time has come to release a valve at Leinster and the other provinces; allow certain players in certain categories (say over 32 years-of-age and, say, over 33 caps move abroad without being ruled out of Ireland in the interest of being morally right-on employers, the money saved by taking 4/5 players off the wage bill - €1.2m approximately - could have been used to keep the Sevens/Olympics programme in place - saving 30 dream-chasers jobs in the up. When this is put to IRFU Performance Director David Humphreys as a way of finding €1.2m, saving the Sevens/Olympics jobs, and helping with the log-jam of young players, he disagrees with me completely... "No," he says, leaving a pause and bringing a silence over the room such as when Mick Jagger announces 'now here's a sing we wrote recently..."No. We've talked about the competitiveness of our provinces not being where we want it to be if we were to let some of our top players go. "It's a question that we've talked about internally, we've discussed it internally."But actually when you look at the Irish system, one of the great strengths is our player welfare, our player management. "We want all our players playing into their early-to-mid-thirties, we want to give them every chance and we believe by what we have in each of our provinces by how we manage them throughout the course of the season. "That gives them the best opportunity to have a much longer career than perhaps if you let them go and play in other leagues. "For me at the minute, that is not something that's up for discussion. up for discussion. "We've considered it, we believe that it's a fundamental strength of the Irish rugby system and believe it will continue to be so."I don't expect the IRFU Performance Director to change my mind on this soon but I'd like to see those 30 jobs in sport restored and I'd like for 19/20/21/22 year-olds being given chances to breakthrough at Champions Cup and international I still secretly think Jordie Barrett got to spy on us for six months, was taking notes, and consequently the All Blacks were not damaged in the least but will actually benefit from his spell in should do the same; send front-rows to France, second-rows to South Africa, back-rows to New Zealand and outside backs to have them report back! Meanwhile in a week where Rassie Erasmus said he wanted three players for every position before he chooses his treble-attempting RWC 2027 squad... I'd like to see half-a-dozen more Irish youngsters being given their chance to impress - our current base is, as is repeatedly shown at Rugby World Cups, too thin.

Seani Maguire reveals how Cork City are going to win fans back over after struggling this season

SEÁNI Maguire understands the only way to put a Cork in fans' frustrations is to start delivering wins. Cork City had their lowest gate of the season on Monday night, with just 1,815 turning out to Turner's Cross to see Djenairo Daniels scoring an injury-time equaliser to 2 Maguire has been limited to just 10 league games so far this season due to injury 2 The former Ireland international will be hoping to replicate his first stint at Cork City The point was welcome for a team that have won just twice in the league all season, but still leaves newly-promoted City bottom of the table by four points ahead of tonight's clash with St Pat's. And there were plenty of disgruntled of the displeasure was aimed at the club's hierarchy, as chants of 'we want our club back' were heard, as well as complaints about the pricing with tickets now costing €25. But striker Maguire — a league and Cup winner during his first stint at the club — knows how everything can change if the team on the pitch starts delivering. He said: 'Look, I can sense their frustration, it's their club. They've supported them for years, they go to every game, they spend their well-earned money. 'I don't think it's coming from a lack of effort, every single player is working their socks off every week to make sure we're getting points on the board. 'I've been at the club through the best days and best years. If we can get the crowd behind us, behind the players, it will do a lot for us because I feel when you have Turner's Cross rocking, it can give us that edge. 'That falls into the players' hands, we are the only people who can get us out of this situation because the manager picks 11 players, 16 players if required to turn things around. Most read in Football 'The only way to get the fans happy and optimistic is getting performances on the pitch and winning games.' Maguire — who returned to City last August having been part of their golden era in 2016 and 2017 — understands this season has been a letdown so far. Saipan film trailer splits opinion as Irish football fans voice concern about Roy Keane portrayal He added: 'We've only won two games all season and it's not been good enough. 'It can become a sort of mental thing, mind over matter, when things aren't going your way, you can start to feel sorry for yourself, especially with a young group now. 'But we can't really dwell on the past, we can only deal with what is in the present and the future.' City have performed slightly better of late — hitting 18 shots to Drogheda's three on Monday night as new boss Ger Nash begins to put his stamp on the team. Maguire is now fully fit after missing two months with a hamstring injury, while Nash has been busy in the transfer market. But Maguire agrees that the team need to change their fortunes quickly before their situation becomes any more precarious. He added: 'What is it 15 games left? There is still a lot of football to play, I don't think anyone should start panicking yet. 'But we don't have enough time to feel sorry for ourselves, we need to get up and start winning games because we have only won two games and haven't kept a clean sheet. 'We need to start picking up points real quick. Because if we don't, it could be too late.'
