Amanjot 2.0: All-rounder Kaur determined to make a mark for India

CHENNAI: WHEN Amanjot Kaur walked onto the field at the SSN College Ground, Chennai on January 7 for Team E during the senior women's one-day challenger Trophy clash against Team A after an eight-month injury layoff, she did not feel nervous. Instead, Kaur was grateful to be back on the field. It was when a back stress fracture and a ligament tear in her hand put her out of action in April 2024, Kaur realised how much the sport meant to her. Like most players, recovery was not easy either. With so much time to kill, the mind may play havoc. Kaur had to adapt and started doing chores like making salad, painting and watching movies to keep herself busy and occupied during rehabilitation. And when she finally made a comeback, the Punjab all-rounder unleashed herself like never before. Even though her team did not make the final, she impressed with her bowling in the senior challengers and went on to play a crucial part in Mumbai Indians winning their second Women's Premier League title. An India comeback followed in Sri Lanka where she took back-to-back three-fers in the ODI tri-series. Now, Kaur is in England, hoping to make a mark as a genuine all-rounder in all three departments in the five T20Is and three ODIs that begin on Saturday. 'I am very excited but I have to control my emotions,' Kaur told this daily ahead of the England tour in May. 'I have to bowl according to the conditions and the team's requirements. It's not like if the conditions are good, I have to overdo with my swing. I want to continue from where I left in Sri Lanka and not leave it behind. No point in doing it in bits and pieces. I am very excited.' While it has been a memorable six months for Kaur, the road to getting to that point in Chennai began mid 2024. When the 24-year-old injured her hand during the Bangladesh tour in April 2024, it did not feel as bad. Even the MRIs and scans showed a grade two tear, but the pain was immense. It was only when she did an ultrasound, Kaur realised that her ligament got folded at the joint because of which she could not extend her hand. Coupled with the back pain she felt during training, Kaur reported to the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. She was not able to move properly. 'For a couple of months, I had to be on bed rest. I did not know what to do with all the time I had. I was cranky. The initial period was very tough. My family doesn't understand cricket. The injury was a big setback for them. We are in the circuit, so we know that the injury is part and parcel of the game. But my family did not get it. They think that there are six or eight months and there are so many other young players and someone will come in. They think from a different point of view,' the 24-year-old explained.

Is Steve Spurrier right about the Texas Longhorns starting QB?

Texas sophomore quarterback Arch Manning has been the talk of the offseason with 100% positive coverage from the national media, which is not surprising given his lineage and five-star recruiting rating. Already the preseason front-runner for the 2026 Heisman Trophy with +700 odds (FanDuel), Manning's lack of playtime over the last two years after sitting behind veteran Quinn Ewers has led to one famous name questioning the overwhelming hype. This week, Hall of Fame coach Steve Spurrier, most known for coaching Florida (1990-2001) and South Carolina (2005-2015), including leading the Gators to the 1996 National Championship, made an appearance on Pat Dooley's Another Dooley Noted Podcast, as the topic of Arch Manning's first starting season came up, and Spurrier did not hold back. "They've got Arch Manning already winning the Heisman (Trophy), too. My question is, if he's that good, how come they let Quinn Ewers play all the time last year? He was a seventh-round pick." Spurrier is, of course, entitled to his opinion, but it's fair to note that Quinn Ewers played through a torn oblique through most of the 2024 season, resulting in a lack of mobility that hindered his accuracy. During Ewers' two-game absence, Manning looked solid in his place and went on to appear in ten games, primarily used as a runner. However, Manning will be playing in front of two new starters at left and right tackle and throwing to an inexperienced wide receiver corps, but will be aided by a talented running back room led by junior Quintreveon Wisner. Using Ewers' 7th-round draft selection could be seen as a cheap shot. Still, I believe that last season's veteran team would have continued to back Ewers as the starter to finish his Texas career on a high note before Manning eventually took the reins. Arch Manning's arm strength, dual-threat running ability, and above-average accuracy and touch should lead a young but highly talented Texas offense to at least 10 or 11 wins, mainly due to head coach Steve Sarkisian's play-calling. Like Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed, both sophomore signal callers will be under fire if things go south. Still, unlike Manning, Reed will be working with an equally talented, but more experienced, receiving corps and a loaded running back room in front of what many consider the best offensive line in the SEC. Land Rover unveils 2026 Defender Trophy Edition

LAND ROVER has introduced a new chapter in its legacy of exploration with the debut of the 2026 Defender Trophy Edition, an expedition-ready variant of the Defender 110 SUV that celebrates the British marque's historic ties to global off-road challenges. Designed to meet the demands of serious adventurers, the latest Trophy Edition is inspired by the brand's storied past while looking firmly to the future of purposeful travel and environmental stewardship. Available in two classic colour finishes–Deep Sandglow Yellow and Keswick Green–the Defender Trophy Edition evokes the aesthetics of vintage Land Rover expeditions. This distinctive model comes equipped with a suite of expedition-specific enhancements, establishing it as a formidable companion for off-road exploration. Under the bonnet lies the 3.0-litre inline-six turbo-diesel engine, producing 346hp and incorporating mild-hybrid technology. The vehicle rides on gloss black 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in all-terrain tyres, while exterior additions such as gloss black wheel arch protection, a dark rear scuff plate and a black front undershield contribute both to aesthetics and functionality. Subtle but telling design flourishes mark the Trophy Edition's unique identity. Trophy decals adorn the bonnet and C-pillars, with dedicated rear badging completing the exterior branding. The interior features illuminated 'Trophy' treadplates and Ebony Windsor leather seats, adding a refined touch. A colour-coordinated cross-car beam, finished with laser-etched Trophy badging on the end caps, reinforces the edition's bespoke character. For those seeking even greater expedition capability, the Trophy Kit option pack enhances the vehicle's utility. This upgrade includes a genuine Expedition Roof Pack, a black deployable roof ladder, gloss black side-mounted gear carrier, Classic Mud Flaps on both axles, and a raised air intake to ensure engine breathability in extreme environments. Land Rover has stated that this edition pays homage to the classic Trophy and Challenge events of its heritage, but is also poised to forge its own legacy. To that end, the launch of the 2026 Trophy Edition coincides with a newly established Defender Trophy competition, created in collaboration with conservation charity Tusk—a long-time partner of the brand. Set against the rugged landscapes of Africa, the competition will serve as both a celebration of adventure and a demonstration of environmental responsibility. Participants will compete in pairs but be scored individually through a series of grueling physical, strategic and off-road challenges. Each round is designed not just to test endurance and skill, but also to reflect Defender's core values of purpose and perseverance. Finalists will have the opportunity to contribute to a conservation mission facilitated by Tusk, allowing the competition to leave a lasting impact on the regions it touches. Land Rover describes the experience as 'a unique test of wit, willpower and teamwork' and promises that the Defender Trophy will offer more than just adrenaline—it will create a tangible legacy where epic adventure meets meaningful action. The 2026 Defender Trophy Edition thus not only represents a bold technical and stylistic evolution of the Defender nameplate, but also reaffirms Land Rover's commitment to exploration with a conscience.

Giddy Storms To Race 1 Victory

Giddy was beaten off the line by series newcomer Antal Sabo, who started alongside him on the front row of the grid. Antal made the best start in his RaceLab Academy entry and led confidently around the first lap but Ajay had him under pressure quickly and Sabo's lack of race experience showed when he went into Turn One too quickly on the defensive line, went wide on the exit and allowed the front runners through. Giddy never looked back and raced away from a chasing Harry Townshend and Lee Zeltwanger to score maximum points in the Winter class for drivers who raced in the main Bridgestone GR 86 Championship while Zeltwanger extended his Trophy class lead with another classy podium result. Townshend put in a solid drive for another second place, resisting pressure from Zeltwanger before edging away by a few car lengths in the final couple of laps. Race victory however, belonged to Giddy, who remains not only the youngest driver in Toyota 86 racing in NZ, and the youngest to win a race, but also one of the country's youngest and most promising rising stars. 'That's great to get the first win and after Antal made his mistake it was just a question of me not making any either. The car was very good though,' said a delighted Giddy afterwards. Sabo showed plenty of speed but a similar mistake at turn one later in the race defending his fourth position pushed him back to sixth in the overall results behind CareVets Scholarship racer Corban Sprague and DAYLE ITM driver Matt Day. Action Motorsport duo Toby Elmiger and Noel Simpson finished seventh and eighth while Nathan Grammer completed the runners in ninth - making it to the chequered flag despite having a slow puncture.
