Andhra HRD Min Lokesh honours tribal teacher for transforming government school
Kalyani Kumari, posted at JM Thanda Mandal Parishad Single Teacher Primary School since 2017, assumed charge when the school had just 14 students, only two of whom attended regularly.
With closure imminent, she used personal funds to purchase learning materials and conducted door-to-door visits to encourage enrolment. Her efforts led to a surge in admissions—by the 2020-21 academic year, the strength grew to 53, and students earned admission to Gurukuls and Navodaya schools. Currently, 43 students are enrolled.
Lokesh listened keenly to her teaching practices. 'It is historic to achieve this as a single teacher. We have much to learn from you,' he said. Lokesh highlighted the government's commitment to school reforms, noting that 9,600 schools now have a teacher for each class.
Kumari shared her initiatives, including a weekly 'Star of the Week' award, hygiene promotion under Dirghayushman Bhava, and regular distribution of learning kits through Maa Toli Adugu. She ensures discipline through daily homework, parent engagement, and attendance protocols. Lokesh said such best practices would shape future education policy. 'Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan are committed to rebuilding trust in public education,' he said. 'Teachers like Kalyani Kumari are the torchbearers of change,' he added.

Banned adult streaming platforms evading blocks, MIB informs Standing Committee
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has informed the Parliamentary Standing Committee that it continues to receive complaints through various channels regarding blocked platforms offering adult content reappearing under new names or IP addresses. The Ministry stated that it is reviewing these instances in order to take appropriate action. These comments were submitted as part of the MIB's response to the Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology's report titled Action Taken on the Observations/Recommendations of the committee contained in their Third Report (Eighteenth Lok Sabha) on 'Demands for Grants (2024–25), dated 24 July. While the matter is under active consideration, the committee has sought clarity on whether the ministry has engaged with editorial boards of online platforms to prevent the misuse of freedom of expression, including the spread of vulgar content and fake news. Live Events On 23 July, a day before submitting the report, the ministry directed internet service providers (ISPs) across the country to block public access to 25 OTT streaming platforms for allegedly hosting and distributing unlawful content. In its notification, the ministry cited violations of Section 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act, 2000; Section 294 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023; and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986. The action was taken under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, which require intermediaries and digital publishers to adhere to a prescribed Code of Ethics and remove unlawful content upon notification by the government. The list of blocked platforms includes: ULLU, ALTT, Big Shots App, Desiflix, Boomex, Navarasa Lite, Gulab App, Kangan App, Bull App, Jalva App, Wow Entertainment, Look Entertainment, Hitprime, Feneo, ShowX, Sol Talkies, Adda TV, HotX VIP, Hulchul App, MoodX, NeonX VIP, ShowHit, Fugi, Mojflix, and Triflicks. This is not the first such action by the MIB. In March 2024, it ordered the blocking of 18 OTT platforms for disseminating obscene and, in some cases, pornographic content. As part of that enforcement, 19 websites, 10 mobile applications (seven on the Google Play Store and three on the Apple App Store), and 57 associated social media accounts were made inaccessible to the public in India. Copies of the orders were also sent to the Delhi Police for further legal action. The Code of Ethics under Part III of the IT Rules, 2021, mandates that OTT platforms must refrain from publishing content prohibited by law and must classify content into five age-based categories: U (Universal), U/A 7+, U/A 13+, U/A 16+, and A (Adult). Speaking in the Lok Sabha on 27 November 2024, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw underscored the need to enhance editorial oversight of content on social media and OTT platforms. He noted that editorial safeguards, which were standard in traditional media, are now largely absent in the digital era, resulting in the misuse of free speech to disseminate vulgar content and misinformation. The minister also highlighted the need to strengthen the current legal framework. He emphasised that a societal consensus would be essential for this and suggested that the matter could be referred to Parliamentary Committees for further deliberation. On 19 February 2025, the ministry issued an advisory to Online Curated Content Publishers (OTT platforms) reminding them of their obligations under Indian law and the Code of Ethics prescribed by the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

IT ministry officials to meet media bodies on July 28
Officials from the IT ministry will meet media bodies on July 28 to address the concerns about some provisions of the country's data privacy law that impact journalists, including the amendments to the Right To Information (RTI) Act through the digital privacy data protection (DPDP) Act. IT ministry officials to meet media bodies on July 28 This comes a month after 22 media bodies sent a joint memorandum to IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighting some provisions of the data privacy law that have 'serious repercussions for press freedom and the profession of journalism.' Ministry officials, including secretary S Krishnan, will hold a meeting with the Editor's Guild of India, Press Club of India, Indian Women's Press Corps, among others to understand their concerns. Principal DG of PIB Dhirendra Ojha will also be present at the meeting next week. The memorandum, which bears the signatures of 1,020 journalists, outlines five key demands of the journalists to the government. One of the central demands is the complete restoration of the original section 8(1)(j) of the RTI Act, which journalists describe as a vital legal tool for pursuing public interest journalism. Through section 44(3) of the DPDP Act, the government has proposed amending section 8(1)(j) of the RTI Act, reducing an 88-word provision to a mere six words, significantly diluting its original scope and intent. The undiluted provision stipulates that personal information can be withheld only if it doesn't have any relevance to public interest, or if its disclosure would cause an unwarranted invasion of privacy, unless the authorities are satisfied that a larger public interest justifies its release. The amended provision would take away this safeguard, enabling authorities to deny information solely on the grounds that it is 'personal,' regardless of its relevance to public accountability. 'We, the undersigned, demand that the unamended Section 8 (1)(j) of the RTI Act be restored in totality because it has been one of the most effective legal tools for practising journalism in the public interest,' said the memorandum, seen by HT. Apart from the RTI-related concern, the media bodies have asked for exemptions for journalists from the DPDP Act's definitions such as 'data fiduciary,' 'data processor,' and 'personal data,' which, they claim, criminalise routine journalistic work. Second, it urges the removal or amendment of provisions which require informed consent from individuals before collecting or publishing their personal data. Third, it calls for inclusion of journalists and media organisations among exempted entities, noting that startups are listed while the press is not. And fourth, it demands the protection of journalistic sources, warning that the powers granted to the Data Protection Board and the government could compel disclosure of confidential information. In a letter dated March 23, 2025, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh had urged Vaishnaw to review and repeal section 44(3) of the DPDP Act, adding that it destroys the RTI Act. In response, the Union minister had said that the amendment doesn't restrict disclosure of personal information, but rather strengthens the privacy rights of the individuals and prevents the potential misuse of the law. HT reached out to the IT ministry for comments, but did not receive a response till the time of going to print.

During a meeting with the representatives of several industrial associations, including CII, FICCI, FTCCI, ALIP, TIF, TOPMA and TS TMA, held at the Secretariat on Wednesday, Sridhar Babu said: 'We stand by the industrialists contributing to the state's progress. We have no intention of burdening them under the guise of laws and regulations. We will safeguard every industry in the state.
