Dilutes the importance of September 16
Published on: Sun, Aug 03, 2025 Text Size: September 16 is history. September 15 is not. To the people outside Sabah and Sarawak, they may get confused about which day was it that Sabah and Sarawak became part of Malaysia. The DE carried a front page report on July 25 which read that Sabah leaders were not amused as businesses fume with regards to the additional holiday on the eve of Malaysia Day on 16 September. Aside from how the business community feels, in my opinion this declaration of a public holiday on September 15 has done a great injustice to Sabah and Sarawak. Simply put, it has diluted the significance of September 16 and its meaning to the people of Sabah and Sarawak. September 16 is history. September 15 is not. To the people outside Sabah and Sarawak, they may get confused about which day was it that Sabah and Sarawak became part of Malaysia. History buffs will not be confused but what about our fellow Malaysians who do not have an inkling about the formation of Malaysia as it is not even included in school history books except in passing? Now with this declaration of September 15 being a public holiday, can you blame people for thinking that Malaysia Day is celebrated over two days? Let's be honest about this. Declaring a public holiday on September 15 is a benefit to those in Malaya who want to 'Balik Kampong' because September 15 falls on a Monday. That gives you a break from Saturday 13th - Tuesday 16th. Enough time for thousands in Malaya to 'Balik Kampong' and enjoy themselves. But what about us in Sabah and Sarawak ? You have just diluted a sacred day, a day in history to mark the birth of Malaysia to just another day in the September calendar of events! This isn't right. It never will be. You don't declare August 30 a public holiday but you do so on September 15? Why? Centralised price system to boost transparency
Published on: Monday, August 04, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 04, 2025 By: Crystal E Hermenegildus Text Size: Armizan said the effort aligns with the Government's long-term plan to stabilise the cost of living by tackling the root causes of inflation- not only through subsidies, but by increasing supply chain efficiency and accountability. PENAMPANG: The Government will develop a centralised Price and Supply Repository System to monitor price trends and prevent manipulative practices in the market, said Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali. He said the system, to be introduced under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), will provide a transparent data platform to detect abnormal price movements and support enforcement action against profiteering and cartel-like behaviour. 'This is a proactive step toward ensuring fairer market practices and greater price transparency across the supply chain, especially for essential goods,' he told reporters after officiating the Seminar Kenegaraan Malaysia Madani: Rancakkan Madani Sabah at ITTC Penampang. According to Armizan, the repository system will consolidate real-time information on pricing, supply volumes, and distribution to assist both consumers and regulators in making informed decisions. 'Through this system, enforcement agencies will be able to act more swiftly and decisively using data-driven evidence. It's a game-changer in combating unethical manipulation and protecting consumer interests,' he said. He added that the system will be developed through inter-ministerial cooperation and partnerships with industry players, including suppliers, retailers, and logistics operators. Armizan said the effort aligns with the Government's long-term plan to stabilise the cost of living by tackling the root causes of inflation- not only through subsidies, but by increasing supply chain efficiency and accountability. 'The repository system is not just a database. It is a tool to break the monopoly of information held by certain parties who manipulate prices for profit,' he said. Enforcement under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 and the Competition Act 2010 will also be strengthened using the data from the repository, which is expected to help uncover price-fixing activities, stock hoarding, and artificial shortages. Armizan emphasised that the initiative reflects the Madani Government's commitment to protecting consumers while creating s healthier market environment that encourages genuine competition. 'This is part of our wider agenda under 13RMP to raise the rakyat's purchasing power and build a resilient domestic economy,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? As 16.8k M'sians face travel ban for unpaid RM1.2b taxes, one family owing RM1.7b can travel freely
BOTH the Inland Revenue Board Malaysia (LHDN) and the Madani government have been taken to task for lacking the political will to recover the so-called RM1.7 bil in tax arrears owed by disgraced former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak and son Datuk Nazifuddin Najib as instructed by the Federal Court in October 2023. This came about after the nation's tax collector has reportedly imposed travel bans on over 16,800 individuals from the period of January-May this year for over RM1.2 bil in unpaid taxes. Instead of praising the LHDN for its enforcement action to ensure compliance, the revelation prompted a few Madani government critics to train their guns on Najib and son who have yet to settle their dues by insinuating double standards. '16,800 tax defaulters only defaulted RM1.2 bil but one thieving family defaulted RM1.7 bil in taxes yet Rosmah (Najib's wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor) and her kids happily travelling everywhere,' FreeMalaysian (@FreeMsian) hit out. 16,800 tax defaulters only defaulted RM1.2 billion. Truth seeker CondorHeroesReturns (@Condorretu58866) went a step further to fault Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar who also happens to be the Finance Minister for 'not daring to suspend their passports as he desperately needs to retain his PM post'. 'Without Najib's support, he'll fall!' observed the independent analyst and political commentator. 16,800 tax defaulters only defaulted RM1.2 billion. The apparent showcase of double standards obviously irked ordinary Malaysians who feel that the law of the land tends to be applicable only to commoners as opposed to the ruling elites and their cronies. More broadly, governance advocate ksampoh@MyOwn Inc (@ksampoh) who commented on a post by business radio station BFM News (@NewsBFM) on the travel bans imposed on 16,800 Malaysians has requested disclosure on the following to enhance effectiveness of LHDN's efforts in reducing receivables: Identities or categories of VVIP individuals with tax arrears in the multi‑million or billion‑ringgit range. Enforcement actions taken against them, including travel bans, liens, court actions or asset seizures. Clarification on whether any exemptions, deferred payment schemes or write‑offs have been afforded. Explanation for the lack of transparency (ie absence of publicly available list) in cases of high-value tax arrears. – Aug 4, 2025 LHDN has imposed travel bans on over 16,800 individuals from Jan-May this year over RM1.2 billion in unpaid taxes,to boost enforcement and compliance. The PAC said outstanding tax receivables fell 14.3% to RM34.59 billion in 2023, due to write-offs and reassessments. 🧵1 — BFM News (@NewsBFM) July 30, 2025
