Sports Seriously
Minnesota captured its second consecutive PWHL championship on Monday, as Liz Schepers' goal 12 minutes into overtime gave the Frost a 2-1 victory over the Ottawa Charge in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
The Frost won the best-of-five finals 3-1, as all four games were decided by 2-1 scores in overtime — including Minnesota's victory in triple overtime on Saturday.
On the winning tally, Katy Knoll passed out front to Schepers, who fired a quick shot from the slot that Ottawa goalie Gwyneth Philips saved. Schepers then knocked in the rebound. Klara Hymiarova also got an assist.
Schepers also had the title-winning goal when Minnesota claimed the Walter Cup in the league's first season in 2024.
Frost goaltender Maddie Rooney, who stopped 33 of 34 shots in the clincher, won five straight playoff games to tie the league record for victories in a single postseason.
Philips made 36 saves on 38 shots. She was voted the Ilana Kloss Playoff MVP as she led all goalies with a 1.15 goals-against average and a .954 save percentage through eight starts. The rookie posted four playoff victories, one of them a shutout, and did not drop a game in regulation.
Minnesota's Kelly Pannek opened the scoring at the 10:10 mark of the second period, with assists to Claire Thompson and Grace Zumwinkle. It was Pannek's second goal of the playoffs.
The Charge evened the score on Tereza Vanisova's goal at 10:09 of the third period. Danielle Serdachny and Jocelyne Larocque assisted.
Vanisova led Ottawa with 15 regular-season goals but went eight games into the playoffs without a score, finally tallying on her 33rd shot on target.
After playing penalty-free hockey in both the second and third periods, the teams were assessed offsetting two-minute minors for roughing at 8:01 of overtime.

Justin Jefferson on JJ McCarthy: ‘I want him to be just as confident as I am of him'

Justin Jefferson on JJ McCarthy: 'I want him to be just as confident as I am of him' Yahoo Sports' Jason Fitz spoke with the Minnesota Vikings wide receiver about the team's transition to the former first round pick at quarterback and why he's excited for the former Michigan Wolverine to take the reins in 2025. Justin joined Yahoo Sports on behalf of General Mills and their new limited-edition Cinnamon Toast Crunch boxes. View more Advertisement Video Transcript Jason Fitz with Yahoo Sports hanging out with NFL superstar Justin Jefferson, joining us on behalf of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. But let's start with some football because frankly, on all of our shows at Yahoo, we've been talking a lot about your team, different quarterback this year than we had last year. What's the adjustment like for you getting used to working with JJ? Last year he got hurt and I just wasn't able to really, you know, be, you know, hands on, uh, and being locked in and, you know, the play calls connecting with the receivers and uh everything else that that goes on with being a quarterback. Advertisement So uh I think now he's just, you know, becoming more confident, more uh settled in, I would like to say, you know, as his teammate and, you know, just as a captain of the team, uh, just trying to, you know, just make him dial in every chance that I can and uh our lockers are right next to each other. So, uh, every chance that I get to talk to him about, you know, football, about any, anything, uh, that goes on. Outside of football, uh, just try to get to know him as much as I can cause, you know, when the season comes and, uh, whenever we're locked in, um, I want him to be just as confident as I am of him, uh, to, to make the plays out there. You also love flag football and a lot of people talking about flag football coming to the Olympics. Advertisement What would it mean for you to get a shot at being an Olympian? I mean, as a flag ambassador, you know what I'm saying? I, I, right. It's only, it's only right. I mean, but you know, just like I, I, I tell everyone that asked me that question, uh, you know, a lot goes in in, you know, 2 to 3 years. Uh, so, you know, the Olympics in 2028, and uh, you know, of course, the 22 to 3 more seasons away and, uh, you know, we, we don't really know what's going to happen with our bodies, you know, uh, you know, of course, what goes on during the offseason, uh, but You know, just if everything goes well and everything is right for me. Advertisement Of course I would love uh to be, you know, a part of that team and uh to compete for a gold. Medal. That's always been, you know, a dream and something that I always wanted to accomplish, uh, you know, standing on that stage and getting that gold medal and, uh, you know, just to be an Olympian, you know, that's something that I always dreamt of, but of course football was never really in the Olympics, so now we finally have a chance. And it probably will be my only chance that I can get, so, so I'll be like, why not, why not? That's one of the coolest things about flag is like just talking to NFL players. Advertisement You guys light up when you talk about it. Like it's gonna be electric to watch. You, you light up when you talk about obviously breakfast cereals too. So walk me through, you got to make your own combination of flavors for Cinnamon Toast Crunch. All right, so was the experimentation, like how do you choose the flavors? Give me, give me the, the details on this. Well, first of all, the whole experience was fire to me, you know, I always uh dreamt of being on a a cover of a box, always, you know, dreamt of having my own, you know, cereal and it's just always a flashback moment for me, you know, just, uh, seeing me on the cover of a box and. Advertisement Uh, being able to choose my own, uh, different flavors and, uh, seeing the, the different comments that I get from other people that try uh, the flavors. So, uh, it was a whole great experience, uh, you know, just having that, you know, surreal moment, uh, you know, just being, uh, on that cover and seeing my face. So it it's, it's definitely crazy. So it's definitely crazy.

Vikings fan survey: Gauging expectations for J.J. McCarthy, Minnesota's leadership

The dawn of another Minnesota Vikings training camp means it's a perfect time for our annual survey. In 2023, about 52 percent of the responders said they believed the Vikings would win a Super Bowl within the next 10 years. Last year, that figure climbed above 60 percent. This is one of the many returning questions for 2025. We'll aim to gauge your confidence in ownership, general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O'Connell. Yes, J.J. McCarthy is a significant subject. You'll have the chance to offer opinions on the newcomers, the offensive line and the cornerback room. Advertisement How many games do you think these Vikings will win? Will McCarthy eclipse 3,000 passing yards? Which NFC North team are you most afraid of? Give us your perspective below, and we'll round up the results for a story next week. (Note: Readers using our app on an Android device might need to use two fingers to scroll through the survey. Are Twins buyers or sellers? Which players need to step up in second half?

They're resting for now, but with upcoming series against the lowly Colorado Rockies and Washington Nationals, and the Los Angeles Dodgers in between, the Minnesota Twins must be ready for when the season resumes Friday. After a disastrous June, a good homestand left the Twins in a better place. However, the club was a disappointing 47-49 in the first half, which recently drew a slew of rival scouts to evaluate potential trade targets. Advertisement With the July 31 trade deadline nearing, the Twins are four games back in the American League wild-card race and must figure out quickly how they fit into the playoff picture. Here are several prominent questions facing the team. The realistic answer to their most significant question is that not much is likely to occur at the trade deadline. Don't expect the Twins to buy big. Nor does it seem as if they'll sell, either. It's conceivable the Twins could trade one of their talented team-controlled relievers, Jhoan Duran, Griffin Jax or Brock Stewart. However, it would be shocking if they traded any for prospects unless they received a massive overpay. The likelier path to parting with one of their relievers is by adding a major-league bat they think could immediately help the team. Essentially, they'd be trading from a strength to fill a weakness. Given their current position, the Twins are unlikely to spend much prospect capital improving the roster with impact talent. According to Fangraphs, the Twins have a 22 percent chance of making the playoffs. Baseball Prospectus gives them a 28 percent chance and Baseball Reference says 10 percent. Those figures don't inspire much confidence as the Twins must leapfrog four teams over 66 games. However, the odds also indicate the Twins, which have a moderately valuable class of departing free agents to peddle, aren't out of it, notably after they completed a 6-3 homestand. Playing well against Tampa Bay and the Chicago Cubs probably gives the front office confidence that the Twins are still capable despite their flaws. As difficult as the road to playoff success would be playing as a wild-card team, it's hard to see the front office punting the season and regrouping for next year, not with the team up for sale. Advertisement Instead, it seems likely the Twins will sit by idly. Still, adding anything of consequence would play far better in the clubhouse than last year's deadline effort, which left players disappointed. The current situation is a crapshoot, though Zebby Matthews' performance at Triple A on Sunday offers encouragement. Matthews struck out nine in four scoreless innings, which leads one to believe he'll return to the majors soon. With his hip inflammation resolved, Bailey Ober is throwing bullpen sessions and won't need much time, either. Still, it wouldn't be surprising to see Ober make one rehab start since he and the Twins spent the last week trying to clean up mechanical flaws in his delivery. After he produced seasons worth of consistency, we've seen how damaging it is for Ober to be even the slightest bit off. His pinpoint command is critical to good results, and the Twins need him to return to full capability. Then there's Pablo López, who has played catch for the last 10 days. On Friday, López said his process is off to a good start. 'The first day I was a little like hesitant (because) I hadn't thrown a baseball in 30-some days,' López said. 'But then the next two were like, 'I've done this my whole life, nice and easy.' López is returning from the same injury that ended Joe Ryan's 2024 season, a Grade 2 teres major strain. Unlike Ryan, López won't have time to fully recover, which means the team will rely on his feedback. 'I have to be smart about it,' López said. 'That doesn't mean that you're not going to be able to throw with an MRI showing a little bit of something. And that's also when I have to be honest, be like, 'Hey, I feel like I can push myself.' Now, it's like I know that I can still perform while my body continues to do its thing and heal.' Advertisement The initial timeline — and it's not an exact science — provided by the Twins for López's return was 8-12 weeks, which means sometime between July 30 and August 27. Adding a healthy López for the final month to six weeks would be huge for the team's regular and postseason chances, if he's capable of pitching at a high level. Carlos Correa's first-half offensive performance was mediocre. His OPS-plus sits at 90, which suggests Correa is far from horrendous. However, the Twins are paying him to produce at an All-Star clip, especially with runners in scoring position, and he's not. Correa is far from the only key hitter to have struggled in the first half. Royce Lewis showed signs, and his hustle during the last homestand is encouraging. However, the Twins desperately need Lewis to hit again the way he did early in his career. Since he returned from a hamstring injury on May 31, Matt Wallner has a .698 OPS, a number well below what the front office thought he'd produce when Max Kepler was allowed to depart via free agency. For the Twins to succeed, at least one of those players needs to produce at an All-Star level, and it is much more likely that two will. Luke Keaschall, who is nearing a return, is another wild card. After taking several rounds of live batting practice, Keaschall is on the verge of beginning a rehab assignment later this week. How he performs after missing 2 1/2 months with a broken forearm remains to be seen. However, Keaschall demonstrated how much of a spark plug he can be with his bat and legs during a seven-game stint in April. (Photo of Carlos Correa: David Berding / Getty Images)
