Cathay upbeat on Malaysia's aviation sector; unit to start Subang flights Aug 1
Robbie Blackwood, Cathay Pacific's area head for Malaysia and Brunei, said he remains upbeat about the aviation sector's outlook.
"We've seen strong resilience in the Penang market, especially on the cargo side, which performed very well in the first half of this year. Agility is key. We're constantly monitoring new route opportunities, and we have a really good team here who can identify that," he told Business Times after the unveiling of the "Traverse with Paramount" campaign, a partnership with Paramount Property, here on Wednesday.
"Our extensive network allows us to serve emerging routes and new cargo types effectively. Passenger performance has also been encouraging, with leisure travel remaining strong. This year, corporate travel is making a notable comeback, and we expect customer demand to continue rising, although our capacity plans are still being finalised."

Cathay Pacific acquired HK Express in 2019 and has been actively expanding its footprint in Malaysia.
"When we explored new markets, we started with Penang, launching daily flights to Hong Kong in November last year. From August, we'll expand into Subang with daily departures as well, making Subang the second Malaysian destination for HK Express," Blackwood said.
There are also plans to operate from other airports in Malaysia, especially in popular tourist destinations, but details are still under wraps.
"Malaysia is a key growth market for us as we expand across the region, Blackwood said.
He noted that currently, Cathay Pacific operates seven passenger flights and three freighter flights weekly out of Penang, supporting the state's thriving electronics export sector. HK Express also runs daily passenger flights from Penang.
Cathay Pacific also maintains a strong presence at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), with three daily passenger flights.
For its Subang operations, HK Express will deploy narrow-body aircraft in line with its low-cost strategy, which is likely from the A320 family, potentially including the A321neo, Blackwood said, noting that final aircraft plans are still being finalised.
"Subang serves a slightly different market for us. Its proximity to the city centre is a major advantage, and the evening departure slots cater well to passengers wanting to fly after work. Currently, Cathay Pacific operates morning, early afternoon, and mid-afternoon departures from KLIA. Subang's evening flight adds more flexibility for travellers," Blackwood added.
Separately, for the first time in Malaysia, Cathay Pacific has teamed up with a local property developer to strengthen its brand presence here.
The partnership with Paramount Property for the 'Traverse with Paramount' campaign is built on aligned values, Blackwood said.
"Paramount focuses on what they can offer customers beyond handing over the keys to a home. We approach travel the same way, through exceptional service in flight, at the airport, during check-in, and in our lounges. From a values perspective, the partnership is a natural fit," he said.
The campaign will reward property buyers with between 10,000 and 40,000 Asia Miles for purchases made across eight participating Paramount Property developments.

Nurul Izzah Calls On Bangladesh Interim Government Chief
WORLD By Shakir Husain NEW DELHI, July 27 (Bernama) -- Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar called on Bangladesh interim leader Muhammad Yunus in Dhaka on Sunday. Yunus, during the meeting, sought Malaysia's support for Bangladesh to join the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). "We want to become a part of ASEAN, and we will need your support," he told Nurul Izzah, according to a Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha report. Bangladesh applied to become an ASEAN sectoral dialogue partner in 2020. Yunus also invited Malaysian companies to invest in Bangladesh's growing economy. "Asia is ageing rapidly, but Bangladesh has a lot of young people. Half of our population is under the age of 27. Set up your industries here and export from Bangladesh. It will help both our economies," he said. The interim government's chief advisor informed the PKR deputy chief about Bangladesh's political reforms following last year's uprising, which ended Sheikh Hasina's nearly 16-year rule. Nurul Izzah spoke at Dhaka University on Sunday at a conference marking the first anniversary of the July Revolution.

Tabung Pahlawan Campaign Has Raises RM2.18 Mln
ALOR GAJAH, July 27 (Bernama) -- The 2025 Tabung Pahlawan Campaign, launched in conjunction with Warriors' Day, has raised RM2.186 million as of July 24, reflecting the people's continued support towards the welfare of Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) veterans. Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari said to widen outreach and simplify contributions, the ministry had also introduced a QR code donation campaign as an alternative, targeting a minimum of RM1 from every Malaysian. 'Malaysia has more than 34 million people, imagine if every person contributes at least RM1, the impact would be tremendous. 'That's why we've launched the QR code campaign, which is now widely circulated via social media and official government channels. We hope this will encourage more people to contribute,' he told Bernama after attending a high tea event with Melaka MAF veterans, in conjunction with the 2025 Warriors' Day celebration at Dataran Gangsa, here today. Also present were Veterans' Affairs Department (JHEV) director-general Maj Gen Datuk Semaon Marjuki and JHEV Melaka and Negeri Sembilan director, Major Muhammad Zarifi Tumin. Earlier at the event, 120 MAF veterans from Melaka, representing 22 associations, were celebrated. They were presented with contributions, including Cost of Living Aid, Higher Education Aid, Home Repair Assistance, and 'Bakul Rahmah' food baskets. At the same time, Adly said 151,000 MAF veterans had registered and were now using the Veteran Digital Card, which was introduced in September last year. 'With the digital card, veterans no longer need to carry a physical card as all their information is now accessible on their smartphones. So for those who haven't made the switch, we strongly encourage them to do so and to update their information. 'Although the physical card is still in use, the digital version offers easier access for members, especially to information on health, welfare, and other services,' he said.
