North Korean crosses heavily fortified border to South Korea
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the military identified and tracked the individual near the central-west section of the military demarcation line and conducted a 'guiding operation' before taking the person into custody on Thursday night (July 3, 2025.)
North Korea's Kim says he'll 'unconditionally support' Russia's war against Ukraine
It said authorities plan to investigate the border crossing and did not immediately say whether they view the incident as a defection attempt. The Joint Chiefs said it notified the U.S.-led United Nations Command about the incident and had not detected any immediate signs of unusual military activity by the North.
According to the Joint Chiefs, a South Korean military team approached the unarmed North Korean man after detecting him and, after identifying themselves as South Korean troops, guided him safely out of the mine-strewn Demilitarised Zone that divides the two Koreas.
North Korea's Kim Jong Un oversees air drills, calls for stepped-up war preparation
Border tensions have flared in recent months as the two Koreas traded Cold War-style psychological warfare, with North Korea sending thousands of trash-filled balloons toward the South and South Korea blasting anti-Pyongyang propaganda through loudspeakers.
Since taking office last month, South Korea's new liberal President Lee Jae Myung has made efforts to rebuild trust with North Korea, halting the frontline loudspeaker broadcasts and moving to ban activists from flying balloons carrying propaganda leaflets across the border.
In April, South Korean troops fired warning shots to repel about 10 North Korean soldiers who briefly crossed the military demarcation line. The South's military said the soldiers returned to North Korean territory without incident and that the North didn't return fire.
In June last year, North Korean troops crossed the border three times, prompting South Korea to fire warning shots. Experts suggested these crossings may have been accidental, occurring as North Korean troops added anti-tank barriers, planted mines and carried out other work to bolster border defences amid escalating tensions between the Koreas.
Diplomacy between the war-divided Koreas has derailed since the collapse of denuclearisation talks between Washington and Pyongyang in 2019, which prompted North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to accelerate the expansion of his military nuclear programme and threaten nuclear conflict toward Washington and Seoul.
South Korea's previous conservative government responded by strengthening its combined military exercises with the United States and Japan, which the North condemned as invasion rehearsals.

Chhattisgarh: Maoist killed in encounter in Indravati National Park region
RAIPUR: A Maoist was killed in an encounter between Maoists and security forces in the dense forested terrain of the Indravati National Park area in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, police said on Saturday. Police said they are yet to ascertain the identity of the slain Maoist. (Representational image) Police said the operation was launched based on intelligence about the presence of top Maoist cadres on Friday and has since witnessed intermittent gunfire. Inspector general (IG) of police, Bastar range, Sundarraj P, said that security forces acting on credible inputs initiated a coordinated search operation involving multiple units and during the course of the operation, the body of a male Maoist was recovered from the encounter site along with weapons. 'We are yet to ascertain his identity,' the IG said. Given the active nature of the operation, officials have refrained from releasing further details to ensure the safety of personnel engaged in the mission. Security operations in the Bastar division have intensified in recent months, with forces targeting senior Maoist leadership believed to be operating in the region. The IG remarked that security forces are fully committed to sustaining anti-Maoist operations even during the monsoon season and emphasised that the CPI (Maoist), which has been declared unlawful, now has no option but to surrender and give up violence. 'Over the past 18 months, a total of 415 Maoist cadres have been killed in various encounters across the Bastar range. This number includes top CPI (Maoist) leaders such as general secretary Basavaraju alias Ganganna and central committee member Gautam alias Sudhakar, marking a significant setback for the insurgent group,' the IG said.

Why anti-terrorism squad arrived after Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's wedding in Venice — no, it's not due to protests
It wasn't just the star-studded guest list or opulent venues that made headlines during Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's €40 million wedding in Venice, it was also the unexpected arrival of Italy's anti-terrorism unit. But contrary to what many might assume, their involvement had nothing to do with the widespread protests that shadowed the billionaire's celebration. The unit was there since a dress was missing. As per a report by The Guardian, Sánchez packed 27 designer dresses for her wedding with Bezos — but reportedly left with only 26. Her main ceremony gown is safe. According to Corriere della Sera, the missing garment may have been stolen by someone who gatecrashed Friday night's party. The situation reportedly became so chaotic that Italy's anti-terrorism unit, Digos, was called in to the island. The couple, now honeymooning in Taormina, Sicily, tied the knot during a three-day celebration on the exclusive island of San Giorgio. As per The Guardian, sources familiar with the matter confirmed that a dress had indeed vanished, but denied it was stolen. They also denied reports of a dress catching fire, allegedly involving a vintage Dolce & Gabbana piece, or that gatecrashers infiltrated the event. The couple believes the dress would 'turn up' at some point, so they did not file any formal complaints. The wedding, said to cost between €40 million and €48 million, featured themed parties and a guest list that included Oprah Winfrey, Orlando Bloom, and Kim Kardashian. Yet, across Venice, anti-Bezos protests intensified, forcing a last-minute change in the location of Saturday's reception. As per a report, the protest saw activists project the slogan 'No Kings, No Bezos' in green laser across the bell tower at St Mark's Square. Another involved a Bezos mannequin floating along the Grand Canal on an Amazon box holding fake dollars. Despite the backlash, Venice's mayor defended the event, saying it brought money to the city. Now in Sicily, the couple are staying at the San Domenico Palace hotel in Taormina, made famous by 'The White Lotus', a television series. Unlike Venice, their arrival has been met with enthusiasm from local leaders. 'Jeff and Lauren, we welcome you with open arms,' said Matteo Francilia, mayor of Furci Siculo, a small town near Messina, The Guardian reported. 'Leave behind the beautiful lagoon with its absurd complaints! Here in Furci Siculo you'll find sun, sea and genuine people, who would welcome you with open arms.'
