Asda's Screaming Devil is the best Whispering Angel dupe & over £9 cheaper – plus 5 other rose wines to try this summer

The Sun2 days ago

WITH summer finally here and our purses feeling tighter than ever before, if you're eager to find a rosé wine that's perfect for warm days and super affordable, you've come to the right place.
When it comes to rosé, there's no doubt that Whispering Angel has secured itself an A-list reputation.
The popular rosé comes with plenty of celebrity backing, with Adele, Lady Gaga and the Beckhams pronounced as big fans of the tasty tipple.
But unfortunately for those on a budget, it also boasts a VIP price tag of around £22.50 a bottle.
However, luckily for those looking to cut costs on their alcohol stash, supermarkets have released a variety of similar styles that are much more cost-effective.
So, with the weather heating up and picnic season in full swing, here, Fabulous' Senior Writer and self-proclaimed wine fanatic, Abby Wilson, tests out six of the high-street's best bottles.
Breath of Paradise
£10.99, Lidl
I was excited to try the latest Whispering Angel dupe that hit Lidl shelves only recently, and while it looks practically the same, I have to say, I was thoroughly disappointed.
Yes, it's a nice bottle, but this good-looking blush tribute is not getting a thumbs up from me.
This Whispering wannabe might have the vibe of the real thing but unfortunately, it lacks the flavour.
If you like wine that's bitter and vinegary, this Provençal tipple could be for you.
Yes, it will keep your bank account in the pink, but it lacks depth and to be totally honest, has a nasty acidic taste that quite frankly, tastes cheap.
'Aldi, are you ok hun' wine pro exclaims as she calls store's £6.99 pink bubbles a 'crowd pleaser' you need to snap up
For me, Lidl normally smash it out the park with their dupes, but in my opinion, this is simply style over substance.
Unfortunately, it's not giving me a 'Breath of Paradise'. The only thing I'm noticing is a sigh of disappointment.
There's not much of a fruity flavour and it definitely needs a bit of lemonade to sweeten it up.
While aesthetically it looks the best of the bunch, the taste makes it the biggest loser in my books.
Ranking: 1/5
Tesco Finest Provence Rosé
£10, Tesco
With the cost of our weekly grocery shop rising, there's no doubt that many of our wallets are feeling the pinch.
But if you're wanting to scrimp on rosé, the Tesco Finest Provence Rosé may, or may not, be one to try.
Where my taste buds are concerned, it's dry, weak and watery, with a somewhat tangy aftertaste.
Yes, it's light, but that's about it.

A smooth, well-structured red wine with ripe raspberry and cherry flavours complemented by a touch of spice, this gorgeous Tempranillo is a great value alternative to pricier Spanish reds. It goes with Tapas, stews and casseroles and roast lamb, too.
Great value white that will go with anything!

Did you know there's a wine brand that actually saves the sea?
Lush, black fruit with a touch of spicy oak, this ripe, dark berry-fruit Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon by Hidden Sea boasts supple tannins that add elegance and complexity. And buying this wine removes the equivalent of 10 plastic bottles from the ocean.
Rose for your sweetheart
Baron De Ley Rosado de Lágrima Rioja 2023 (13% abv), Spain Asda, £8 (when on promotion)
This gorgeous pale pink wine has white blossom aromas enhanced by hints of ripe red fruits. The palate is luscious and fresh, all perfectly balanced. Serve this Provence-style wine chilled as an excellent apéritif and also alongside grilled fish. It's perfect for gifting, too, as the bottle is a beaut!
*Note, prices of wine are subject to promotion. Prices correct as of January 27.
I'm normally a huge fan of the Tesco Finest range and can't get enough of their epic microwave meals that are perfect for lazy nights, but this own-brand buy hasn't cut the mustard for me.
It's said to emit 'delicious stone fruit flavours' and has been hailed as 'crisp and delicate', but I'm not getting any of that with this beverage.
The only upside is that it's cheap. You'll be able to enjoy a summer BBQ and toast to all the cash you've cashed with this, so I suppose if I had to, I could force it down if it meant saving a few pounds.
Ranking: 3/5
Château Roquefeuille Côtes de Provence St Victoire
£14, Tesco
If you're after a full body rosé wine, this bottle of Château Roquefeuille Côtes de Provence St Victoire should be one to add to your shopping list.
It's got good depth and a nice sweetness, with a fruity flavour of fresh nectarine.
As well as having soaring character, with an intense, lasting taste, the expensive-looking bottle is sure to impress your dinner party guests.
It's a gem of a wine that's spot on when paired with a summer salad or a creamy pasta for an alfresco meal on a balmy night.
At £14, it's not the cheapest of the bunch - but if you've got a Clubcard, you'll need to move quickly, as you'll now be able to nab it for just £12, making it over a tenner cheaper than the real deal.
Ranking: 3.5/5
Les Sarrins Côtes de Provence Rosé
£15, Tesco
For those after a wonder-wine that screams liquid sunshine, look no further.
Wine enthusiasts will need to get their hands on a bottle of Les Sarrins Côtes de Provence Rosé, which has a sharp but round flavour.
It's more than just a copycat - its deep flavour almost gave me goosebumps (in a good way).
It covers all bases - it's a brilliant all-rounder wine that is sure to be liked by many at your next outdoor function.
It'll get you ahead of the A-list but that's not all, as it's also a lovely bottle that's perfect for picnics and pre-drinks in the garden.
Yes, it's not a mega bargain, but it's refreshing, elegant and gluggable, making it brilliant for those looking for a luxury pale pink wine that will dance on your tastebuds.
Ranking: 4/5
La Balconne Organic Provence Rosé
£18, M&S
11
If you can't afford to splash the cash on Whispering Angel, here's a wannabe that is well worth raving about.
The La Balconne Organic Provence Rosé has been hailed by M&S bosses as 'elegant' and 'charming', and I have to say, I agree. It reaches near the top of the dupe test with flying colours.
It has a light but luscious flavour, with a nice tang that had me reaching for more.
It's floral and fruity, with mouth-watering tastes of berries and wild herbs.
Celebrities with their own wine brands
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie - Château Miraval (Côtes de Provence)
Cameron Diaz - Avaline (Low-intervention, made of organic grapes)

Mary J. Blige - Sun Goddess
John Legend - Legend Vineyard Exclusives (LVE) Rosé
Jay-Z - Ace of Spades Rosé (Sparkling)
Paul Oakenfold (Spokesperson) - Domaine Bertaud Belieu
It's been described as 'delicate yet complex' and for me, that's spot on.
Yes, it's the most expensive of the bunch and isn't that much cheaper than the OG, but it's definitely worth it if you want something that's similar to Whispering Angel but not quite as pricey.
Not only does it taste great and is suitable for vegetarians and vegans, but to top things off, it's also a gorgeous bottle too.
Ranking: 4.5/5
Screaming Devil
£12.97, Asda
But if you're eager to nab a rosé that's bold but not too sharp, with a strong flavour that hits you straight away, look no further.
This Screaming Devil Côtes de Provence not only has a great name, but is of great value too.
It's just like the costly celestial sip, but thankfully, a lot cheaper.
This high-class bottle will save you an impressive £9.53 and not only that, it's also sure to make summer picnics in the park much more straightforward too.
Thanks to the handy glass stopper, there's no need for a corkscrew, so you'll never find yourself desperately Googling hacks to remove a cork again - phew.
It's a lovely, modern bottle and has a sweet and refreshing flavour of white peach.
As well as being vibrant, this thirst slacker from Asda is sure to ruffle the feathers of the big-name bottle, and has a tasty zest that left me pouring a second (and third) glass within a matter of minutes.
So if you can't make it to the South of France this summer, this dupe-tastic buy is a real winner and one that you'll definitely want to stock up on this season.

Glastonbury fans left fuming as show is pulled off air in technical blunder

GLASTONBURY fans have been left fuming as the show is pulled off air in a huge technical blunder. Music enthusiasts wanted to tune into the BBC and their iPlayer streaming service to watch the latest from Worthy Farm. 5 5 5 If you wanted to watch the likes of Scissor Sisters and Charli XCX then you would have to switch the channel. The BBC coverage of the 2025 Glastonbury Festival has been dogged by technical errors. Even at the festival itself, the opening ceremony was branded a flop by disappointed festival-goers. During a set on The Other Stage, the screen cut to black for many BBC viewers today. And it's no better online for those watching iPlayer as the main Saturday feed also suffered from a huge technical difficulty. Those wanting to watch Scissor Sisters were greeted with an apology message that was emblazoned on the screen. It read: "Sorry for the interruption. We're working to fix this." Glasto fans flooded social media in their droves as they were left fuming by the blunder. Writing on X - formerly known as Twitter - one expletive-filled fan fumed: "F****** hell @BBC you cut Blossoms short and now Scissor Sisters when it's just a black screen. Sort it out." A second stated: "Scissor Sisters have been on stage 8 minutes and the screen is still black! Fury as Glastonbury crowd chants 'death to the IDF' during Bob Vylan set aired live on BBC "I've only wanted to watch them, Jade, and Raye all day and now it's not even working for Scissor Sisters!" "#Glastonbury Jeez put up with watching that Winehouse wannabe Raye screen goes blank for Scissor Sisters," exclaimed an angry user. While a fourth asked: "Having to watch Charli because no streams on iplayer I don't even know what she sings #Glastonbury." "Cmon BBC Iplayer…where's Charli xcx?", enquired someone else. Glastonbury backlashes Glastonbury Festival has been going for 54 trailblazing years - but at times it has been a stormy ride Here, we look at the biggest backlashes to hit the iconic music event. The Smiths (1984): One of the first bands to divide the early Glastonbury purists were Manchester indie stars The Smiths. The band's set even sparked a full scale stage invasion as they introduced the crowd to their guitar-driven, post-punk romanticism music. Guitarist Johnny Marr described their usual fanbase as "cup final supporters", adding: "Eventually, I did manage to instigate a stage invasion, which raised a few eyebrows. One fan was trying to climb on stage, I helped pull him up, and then a few more people followed, and all of a sudden we'd managed to turn it into a Smiths gig." The Fence (2002): It wasn't a band or musician that sparked controversy in 2002... it was a fence. Organiser Michael Eavis came under fire when he organised the erection of a £1million fence around the site. The ring of steel was brought in to protect ticket holders and those who might inadvertently endanger themselves by breaking in. Diehard Glasto fans, however, felt it was at odds with the event's hippy ethos of peace and love. Eavis and co refused to back down, though, and the fence remains in place today. JAY-Z (2008): Despite its long history, Glastonbury had never welcomed a rapper for a headline set - until 2008. Jay-Z's top bill booking was met with a flurry of digs, including some from Oasis's Noel Gallagher, who claimed hip hop had no place at the festival. In a perfect clap-back, Jay-Z walked out to a version of Wonderwall before launching into his powerful hit 99 problems. Seven years later, his pal Kanye West followed in his Glastonbury footsteps and topped the bill. Metallica (2014): Thrash metal rockers Metallica were met with raised eyebrows when they were announced as Glastonbury headliners. Some critics claimed they lacked mainstream appeal, while others felt they were past their prime. However, frontman James Hetfield managed to quickly win the crowd round thanks to his good humour and polite manners. Adele (2016): Although Adele wowed both festival goers and music fans at home with her headliner set, the British songstress did cause a stir by turning the air blue. She warned the crowd about her "potty mouth" but not everyone was impressed with with the 30 plus expletives she dropped on the stage during her headline set, which aired on the BBC. And a sixth added: "Since iPlayer is so useless this weekend you only have what's on BBC One and Two of #Glastonbury." On iPlayer, if you wanted to catch the action from The Other Stage, you would have to swap to the dedicated feed which was still working. 5 5

Gemma Collins left 'terrified' after being sent 'rat poison' in the post as TOWIE star ups security at her mansion following menacing letter earlier this month

Gemma Collins has been left 'terrified' after she was sent rat poison in the post as her stalking hell intensifies. The reality star, 44, is said to be 'reeling' after a package containing the toxicant was delivered to her Essex home. Gemma is believed to have reported the incident to police after a 'nasty' glittery note was also found inside the package. A source told The Sun: 'The package was really scary and she was terrified to receive it. 'It was delivered by the postman, but had no postage stamp on it. 'Gemma was worried as it contained rat poison, especially as she has animals at her home.' The reality star, 44, is said to be 'reeling' after a package containing the toxicant was delivered to her Essex home MailOnline has contacted a rep for Gemma for comment. It comes after it was revealed how Gemma was forced to call in police after previously being left 'terrified' by a nasty letter delivered to her home. A source close to the reality star told The Sun how the note detailed the twisted sender's strong dislike for Gemma. After the menacing letter, Gemma was said to have beefed up security at her mansion and police were investigating. Gemma, who was a car dealer before shooting to fame when she landed a role on ITV's The Only Way Is Essex, previously spoke about her experience with stalking. She told how she's had 'scary' people turn up at her shop in Essex and send her terrifying letters. She told how it 'played havoc on her mind' and was the reason she stepped away from her front of house work at her boutique in Brentwood. Appearing on the Daily Mail's Everything I Know About Me Podcast, Gemma said: 'No one would believe the bl**dy crap I've had to deal with. 'I've had a woman stalker that wrote me a letter in white gloves and wanted to kill me. 'You know, people would wish me dead. I'd get all sorts turn up at the shop. Weird. People are weird. And that's why in a way I came away from my shop in the end.' In 2019, Gemma was forced to move out of her home in Essex over stalking fears, with removal vans being pictured at the property at the time. She had been stalked by a man that previously fat-shamed her. It comes after Gemma recently told fans how she had been struck down with pneumonia as she explained her absence from social media. Gemma explained that her condition had been leaving her breathless 'really quickly' but due to medics diagnosing it as viral, antibiotics would be ineffective. She told The Mirror: 'It's shocking, I've had it now for over three weeks and I had steroids given to me by my doctor. It was DJ Fat Tony's wedding and I had to take them to get through that,' 'But I'm off them now and the sickness is really kicking back in. It's so frustrating because I normally have so much energy and I'm always loving life, but now I get really breathless really quickly and I feel like I'm dying.' Pneumonia is inflammation of the lungs, usually caused by an infection. Most people get better in two to four weeks, but babies, older people, and people with heart or lung conditions are at risk of getting seriously ill and may need treatment in hospital. Taking to her Stories Gemma shared snaps as she underwent X-rays while praising medical staff for their care. She wrote: 'Thank you to all the amazing doctors helping me your real life angels'. Announcing the news of her condition on Wednesday, Gemma shared a photo of herself in bed looking poorly in bed. She wrote: 'Hey guys sorry been quiet i have Pneumonia. I'm not as fast or on it as I usually am on the daily. 'I am still honouring my work commitments which is taking every bit of energy I have but will be back entertaining you all soon.' On her Story she added an update as she showed she was on a drip and had been visited by a doctor. One post that showed a drip in her arm read: 'I'm having to take it easy which is not like me very slow and get so out of breath and tired so quick.' WHAT IS PNEUMONIA? Pneumonia is a type of chest infection that affects the tiny air sacs in the lungs. The condition causes these sacs to be become inflammed and fill with fluid, making it harder to breathe. Pneumonia is caused by bacteria or viruses, with the most common being Streptococcus pneumoniae. It affects between five and 11 out of every 1,000 adults every year in the UK. Anyone can suffer from pneumonia, however, at-risk groups include: Babies and young children People over 65 Those with long-term heart, lung or kidney disease People with cancer, particularly those having chemotherapy Smokers Those on drugs that suppress their immune systems Antibiotics or mechanical ventilator use in hospitals also raise the risk. Symptoms include Coughing up mucus Fever Chest pain Loss of appetite Fatigue In severe cases, sufferers may cough up blood, vomit or have a rapid heart rate. Treatment is usually antibiotics, which may need to be given intravenously in hospital in severe cases.

Bain: The K-pop star who came out to the world on stage

Bain was halfway through his band's Los Angeles concert on a crisp April night when the music stopped. In an oversized fur coat and black sunglasses, the 24-year-old K-pop star told thousands of fans: "Before I start the next song - I want to share something with you guys."A brief pause and then: "I'm [expletive] proud to be part of the LGBTQ community!"The crowd erupted in applause and screams as Bain broke into Lady Gaga's pride anthem: "Just put your paws up, 'Cause you were born this way, baby". In that moment, as he came out to the world, he was not nervous, he tells the BBC in an interview at his studio in Seoul - rather, he had been trying to "sound cool". A handful of K-pop artists have come out as gay in recent years - but none as publicly as Bain. Even in 2025, that is a bold move in South Korea's entertainment industry, where stars are held to impossible standards. Admitting to even a heterosexual relationship is scandalous. "There were some people in the industry who knew [I was thinking of coming out] and warned me against it, saying it would be a risk," Bain says. "And of course I thought about the risk - that we might lose fans."But then I thought, society is changing… I might gain more than I might lose."That's the big question: has he thrown open the door to change in an industry that has become global but remains deeply rooted in a conservative South Korea? 'I thought I could just pretend' Bain, whose real name is Song Byeonghee, says he was in secondary school, about 12 years old, when he realised he was afterwards, he decided to become a K-pop trainee but he kept his sexuality a secret - he felt like being gay was "not allowed"."It wasn't something I questioned… I just thought I had no choice," he says. "There was no-one else [around me that was gay]. I thought I could just pretend and keep going." Wealthy, modern South Korea is still traditional in many ways. Powerful yet conservative churches often see homosexuality as a disability or sin. And same-sex marriage is not legally 2021, Bain made his debut as part of a six-member boyband, Just B. They have released several albums and have taken part in reality shows, earning a dedicated audience. But through it all, the years of hiding a part of himself took a toll on Bain. "I was so overwhelmed, I thought maybe I can't be an idol at all. I felt I'd been hiding so much. I decided to talk to Mom."That was about three years ago. His mother was the first person in his family to find out: "We talked for an hour, and I finally said, 'I like men more than women.' That's when she knew."Her reaction was difficult for him. "Honestly, she didn't like it - not at first. She said she thought I could overcome it, that maybe I'd someday like women. She felt sad... that I'd now face bad reactions from others. But [she] said, 'You're my son, so I love you, I support you, I love you.' It was mixed. I was sad, but in the end grateful she said she loves me." Then his team members and company began encouraging him to take the leap - and tell the this year the band began a world tour, and on the last stop of their US tour, Bain decided to come out on stage. Since then, the band has been thrust into the spotlight - with Bain giving countless interviews as he quickly became the new face of the Korean LGBTQ community."I feel like I've changed a lot since coming out. I feel more confident. When I meet someone new, I show who I am immediately," he says. "But I also feel sad that my identity is such a big deal now." Over time, he hopes, people will stop saying "oh, he's gay, but rather, oh, that's just who he is". The taboos in K-pop When South Korean actor Hong Seok-Cheon came out as gay in 2000, LGBTQ representation truly entered the country's mainstream. He was the first Korean celebrity to open up about his sexuality - and it came at a cost. He was dropped from TV shows and have certainly changed since then. A Pew survey from 2019 showed that the number of people who accepted homosexuality has risen to 44% from 25% in 2002. And yet, only a handful of other celebrities have come out. In 2018, Holland became the country's first openly gay K-pop artist and, in 2020, Jiae, a former member of girl group Wassup, came out as bisexual. Both have said they found it hard to sign with a record label as a announcement, however, has been celebrated by both fans and South Korea's LGBTQ community. "When someone like an idol comes out, it gives people like me a sense that we are not alone," says a 26-year-old Korean transgender woman, who does not want to be named."It brings comfort…makes me think, maybe I'm ok the way I am." Online too, a majority of the comments have been positive. One gay fan in a YouTube comment wrote how he was encouraged by Bain, after feeling "so much despair" over "the hateful comments" and discrimination."But thanks to Bain, I've found the courage to keep going." International fans have especially cheered him on: "After the initial shock, I started to cry," said Lia, a K-pop fan from the US who identifies as lesbian."Knowing that Korea still has some repression against LGBTQ people, the bravery and courage he displayed by coming out…[was] admirable."South Korea's cultural footprint has been growing globally, and that has brought fans from everywhere, with their own perspectives and beliefs. They may well reshape the K-pop that will take time. And that is evident in the range of comments in response to Bain's announcement - disapproval to apathy. For one, the country has seen a rise in right-wing, often avowed anti-feminist beliefs in young men, who seem to oppose any challenge to traditional gender those roles remain strong in South Korea. The government and the church champion conventional family values, encouraging young people to marry and have children so they can boost birth rates, currently the lowest in the world. Given all that, it may not be a surprise that homosexuality is still a taboo, even in a global industry like K-pop. This is a world where even straight couples don't talk about their private lives, says critic Lim Hee-yun."K-pop has spent nearly 25 years avoiding the topic of sexuality [altogether]. Even heterosexual relationships are hidden to protect fan fantasies." Bain, he adds, has "challenged that silence in a symbolic and powerful way. I believe it marks a major moment". But he believes fans may have reacted very differently - "it might have been explosive" - if a member of a global boyband had come out as gay."Bain's case was significant, but his group isn't as famous [so] it didn't cause as much stir domestically," Mr Lim has certainly helped raise awareness, he agrees. "It's a slow process but we're seeing more public figures speaking up or content being created around these LGBTQ issues."But any immediate change in K-pop or the entertainment industry is unlikely, according to him. "It's not just a social issue - it's a market issue. Male idols usually have a much larger female fanbase… [and] if you find out your favourite male idol is gay, that can shatter the illusion that you could one day be the object of his affection," he says."So if they do [come out] they risk shaking the foundation their fandom is built on."Bain, however, says his decision would be worth it if even "one person in K-pop gains strength or interest" from it."I've spent so long pretending… I realised that because I came out, others felt safe to do so too."The day he came out, he recalls, several fans approached him, saying they were gay or lesbian, talking about their own identity. "They thanked me and I thought to myself 'I should have done this sooner'."
