Escaped lion attacks woman, 2 children on busy street in Pakistan

Yahoo20 hours ago
An escaped pet lion chased a woman and two children down a busy street in Pakistan's Lahore, police said Friday, with dramatic footage showing the big cat leaping a wall before pouncing on them.
CCTV footage released by the police showed the lion jumping the barrier around its home and pursuing a woman on Thursday night. The lion jumped on her back, knocking her to the ground, the footage showed.
A police report quoted the father as saying the lion then turned to his 5-year-old and 7-year-old children, and clawed their arms and faces.
All three were taken to a hospital but were not in a critical condition.
The owners who ran out of the house were "amused to see their lion attack" the passersby, the father added in the report.
Police said Friday that they had arrested three men.
"The suspects fled from the spot, taking the lion with them. They were arrested within 12 hours of the incident," the office of the Deputy Inspector General Operations in Lahore told AFP.
The lion, an 11-month-old male, has been confiscated by police and sent to a wildlife park.
Officials at the facility said that the animal appears to be in good health.
Keeping exotic animals, especially big cats, as pets has long been seen as a sign of privilege and power in Punjab, the most populous province of the country.
In December 2024, an adult lion escaped from its enclosure in another neighborhood of Lahore, terrorizing residents before being shot dead by a security guard.
The incident prompted the provincial government to pass new laws regulating the sale, purchase, breeding and ownership of big cats.
The law now requires owners to obtain licenses for the animals which are barred from being kept in residential areas.
Breeders have to pay a hefty fee for registration, while farms have to be a minimum of 10 acres in size.
Big cats are imported and bred across Pakistan, seen as symbols of wealth and power to the elite that own them.
Last year, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, which rules the government, banned supporters from bringing lions — the symbol of the party — to political rallies.
In late December, Pakistani YouTube star Rajab Butt was gifted a lion cub on his wedding day, and authorities quickly took notice when they saw video of the animal on social media. The next month, Butt managed to avoid jail after promising a judge to upload animal rights videos for a year.
The attack in Pakistan comes one month after a lion killed a businessman at a luxury lodge in the remote northwest of Namibia. In April, a lion killed a 14-year-old girl outside Kenya's capital in a ranch to the south of Nairobi National Park.

8-year-old girl killed in Southern California fireworks explosion on July 4

Celebration turned tragic when an 8-year-old girl was killed in an explosion during a "large illegal fireworks display" along a residential street in Orange County on July 4, authorities said. The deadly incident unfolded about 9:45 p.m. on a residential cul-de-sac in the 8000 block of Cornflower Circle in Buena Park, according to the Buena Park Police Department. Patrol officers were in the area when they spotted family members "frantically" carrying a child into a home, the agency said in a written statement. "Officers immediately stopped to assist and discovered a young girl suffered critical injuries, consistent with a fireworks-related explosion," the statement said. First-responders provided medical care and rushed the badly injured girl to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, officials said. Investigators determined the explosion took place during what police described as a "large illegal fireworks display" that had been placed in the street by a neighborhood resident. The fireworks "failed and began misfiring toward the residence where the child was," according to the statement. A burning projectile then struck other fireworks that were near the young victim, causing them to ignite as well. "At some point, the child had been struck, causing fatal injuries," the statement said. No other injuries were reported. The resident believed to have set off the fireworks was arrested, police said. The case would be presented to the Orange County District Attorney's Office for consideration of charges. Authorities did not release the identity of the girl killed in the explosion. No further details were available. This article originally appeared on Palm Springs Desert Sun: 8-year-old girl killed in SoCal fireworks explosion on July 4

Several in custody after North Texas police officer shot in neck outside ICE facility

Texas officer shot as several suspects opened fire near immigration detention facility, police say Texas officer shot as several suspects opened fire near immigration detention facility, police say Texas officer shot as several suspects opened fire near immigration detention facility, police say Several suspects are in custody after a police officer was injured in a shooting at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in Alvarado, Texas, in the late night hours of the Fourth of July, officials said. Just before 11 p.m., the Alvarado Police Department said it was called to the 1200 block of Sunflower Lane, outside the ICE Prairieland Detention Facility, on a report of a suspicious person. When officers arrived, they saw a person who appeared to be carrying a firearm, according to a news release. Alvarado police said that when one of the first responding officers tried to engage with the person, an unknown number of suspects opened fire. At least one bullet struck an officer in the neck, police said. The injured officer was flown from the scene to a Fort Worth hospital, was treated and later released, Alvarado police said. According to Alvarado police, several armed suspects were taken into custody after trying to flee the scene with the help of local agencies, including the Johnson County Sheriff's Office. At this time, the suspects' names have not been released, and police are investigating the motive. A federal law enforcement source told CBS News Saturday that local police arrested eight people. The official said some of those apprehended were wearing body armor. The source told CBS News that early reports indicate that more than a dozen masked individuals dressed in black arrived at the Prairieland ICE detention facility late Friday night and vandalized vehicles and security cameras in the parking lot. The individuals launched fireworks in an apparent effort to lure law enforcement, the source said. Justice Department closely monitoring incident The Justice Department said Saturday morning it was "closely monitoring the attacks on DHS facilities." "We are closely monitoring the attacks on DHS detention facilities in Prairieland, TX, and Portland, OR, and are coordinating with the USAOs and our law enforcement partners," Justice Department Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a social media post. "The Department has zero tolerance for assaults on federal officers or property and will bring the full weight of the law against those responsible." Blanche appeared to be referencing an incident which occurred in mid-June in which three people were arrested outside an ICE facility in Portland after clashing with law enforcement, according to a report from CBS affiliate KOIN-TV. Alvarado police are asking anyone with information concerning the incident to call 817-790-0919. contributed to this report.
