8-year-old girl killed in Southern California fireworks explosion on July 4
The deadly incident unfolded about 9:45 p.m. on a residential cul-de-sac in the 8000 block of Cornflower Circle in Buena Park, according to the Buena Park Police Department.
Patrol officers were in the area when they spotted family members "frantically" carrying a child into a home, the agency said in a written statement.
"Officers immediately stopped to assist and discovered a young girl suffered critical injuries, consistent with a fireworks-related explosion," the statement said.
First-responders provided medical care and rushed the badly injured girl to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, officials said.
Investigators determined the explosion took place during what police described as a "large illegal fireworks display" that had been placed in the street by a neighborhood resident.
The fireworks "failed and began misfiring toward the residence where the child was," according to the statement. A burning projectile then struck other fireworks that were near the young victim, causing them to ignite as well.
"At some point, the child had been struck, causing fatal injuries," the statement said. No other injuries were reported.
The resident believed to have set off the fireworks was arrested, police said. The case would be presented to the Orange County District Attorney's Office for consideration of charges.
Authorities did not release the identity of the girl killed in the explosion.
No further details were available.

Man stabbed with 'broken shards of glass' after fight over Pokemon cards: Police
A man in California was stabbed on Saturday, July 5, after what police said started as a fight over Pokémon cards. According to a press release from the Colma Police Department, officers were called to a local GameStop store at around 9:20 a.m. local time after reports of a fight inside the store. Once they arrived, they found a man with multiple cuts and stab wounds, police said. The victim was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries but is now in stable condition, according to police. Colma is located about 11 miles south of San Francisco. Police said that two suspects fled from the store in two separate cars. Both suspects were arrested by police later that day. According to the press release, police identified the suspects as 27-year-old Isaiah Calles and 49-year-old Miguel Orellanas-Flores. Police said that the stabbing came after a fight between the victim and Orellanas-Flores after he allegedly tried to cut in line to buy Pokémon cards. Police said the argument turned physical when Orellanas-Flores allegedly struck the victim "in the back of the head with a glass mason jar." The second man then "grabbed the broken shards of glass of the mason jar and began to stab the victim multiple times," according to police. Police arrested both men and charged them with assault with a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury, battery with serious bodily injury and conspiracy to commit a crime. Both men were booked into the San Mateo County Jail. Online court records show Calles and Orellanas-Flores' first court dates will be on Tuesday, July 8. 19-year-old suspect in Detroit fireworks shooting arrested, police say
Detroit police say the 19-year-old suspected of opening fire near the city's Ford Fireworks show on Monday, June 23 — injuring two people — has been taken into custody after a two-week search. Alphonso Cooper Jr. of Romulus was arrested Monday, July 7, at a home in Washtenaw County, police said in a statement. Police Chief Todd Bettison said investigators worked "countless hours" on the case and that he is confident Cooper is responsible for the shooting, which injured a 17-year-old boy he was allegedly fighting and a 22-year-old woman who happened to be nearby. Both victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Another person was previously sought as a person of interest by police for allegedly helping Cooper flee the scene. Police did not confirm that person's arrest, but DPD Officer Jalen Nelson said everyone believed to be involved is now in custody, and there are no outstanding suspects or persons of interest. More: Detroit cracks down on curfew violations after several teens, children shot The shooting occurred around 10:04 p.m. near Randolph and Larned streets — about a block from Spirit of Detroit Plaza and Hart Plaza, where thousands had gathered to watch the fireworks. Police said the shooting was not random and stemmed from a dispute between Cooper and the teen victim over "about $200 and some change." DPD credited its Fugitive Apprehension Services Team and the Violent Crime Reduction Initiative for the arrest. A warrant for criminal charges has been submitted to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, police said. "I want to thank the community for all the tips, along with my officers and all of our law enforcement partners who assisted in this process," Bettison said.
