IPOH: The Perak government has called on the relevant departments to conduct a thorough investigation into the explosions and tremors reported in several areas here last Wednesday.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the incident, including a similar one in October last year, had caused concern and alarm among residents.
'It is time for the relevant departments and agencies to prepare a full report and conduct a study into the cause of the explosions,' he said at a press conference after closing the National Training Week (NTW) 2025 at the Ipoh Convention Centre (ICC) here today.
Saarani also advised the public not to spread unverified or false information about the incident.
'The public should remain calm and need not worry, as the situation is under control and no serious incidents have been reported so far,' he said.
Explosions and tremors were reportedly heard and felt around Chemor and Chepor here at about 10.30 am on June 18, but the cause remains unknown.
Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin, at a press conference the following day, said the police would hold discussions with the relevant departments and agencies soon to determine the actual cause of the explosions and tremors.
On Oct 21 last year, a strong tremor was felt in several areas around the city, including Tasek, Stadium Perak, Meru, Falim, Manjoi, Chemor, and Sungai Siput, at around 11.06 am, followed by a loud bang.

Further Investigation On Explosion In Ipoh Handed Over To Police- Saarani

IPOH, June 27 (Bernama) -- The state government has handed over investigation into the explosion and tremor incident that occurred on June 18 to the police, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad. He said that so far, initial investigations have been conducted but have not found any specific cause or evidence that can be linked to the incident. "The investigation is continuing, but has not been found anything specific so we cannot comment further... and (now) the police are conducting the investigation because it is related to state security. "There is only one agency (conducting the investigation), which is the police. "What the police get is what will be reported to the state," he said when met after officiating the 2025 International Culinary Competition at Bulatan Azlan Shah today. He said the investigation would continue until the cause of the incident was found because it was the second time in Perak, and similar incidents also occurred in Selangor. Meanwhile, Perak Minerals and Geosciences Department (JMG) director, Nizarulikram Abdul Rahim, in a statement today, said according to his research, mysterious explosions have been reported all over the world for a long time without a definite explanation. "This sound is described from the sky with a moderate to strong explosion, and sometimes shakes windows and walls of buildings. "Mysterious explosions in Ipoh have occurred in 2012, 2018, 2024 and most recently on June 18, 2025 at about 10:30 am and have been determined not to be the result of quarrying activities, bomb tests or sonic booms from jet aircraft," according to the statement. He said initial studies by the Perak JMG showed that the area where the public heard the explosion was within the same range, from Chemor, Klebang, Meru in the north to around Tambun and Gunung Rapat, in the south.

On June 19, Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin announced that police would hold discussions with various departments and related agencies soon, to find out the cause of the explosion and tremors. Earlier, explosions and tremors were reported by the media twice in Perak, on October 21, 2024 and June 18 this year, which allegedly occurred in the areas of Chemor, Chepor, Tasek, Stadium Perak, Meru, Falim, Manjoi and Sungai Siput at about 10 to 11 am.

Ipoh explosion and tremors remain a mystery after 10 days

IPOH: Almost 10 days after a mysterious loud explosion and tremors shook parts of Ipoh on June 18, the cause remains unknown. Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said investigations were ongoing, but no concrete findings have emerged. "This matter falls under the jurisdiction of the police as it involves state security. The police are the sole agency conducting the investigation. "Whatever findings the police make will be reported to the state government," he told reporters after opening the Malaysia Culinary World Cup 2025 at Bulatan Sultan Azlan Shah here today. Saarani acknowledged that the incident required a thorough investigation, especially since similar events had occurred before without resolution. "This is the second such occurrence in Perak. Similar incidents have also been reported in Selangor," he said. Meanwhile, the Perak Minerals and Geoscience Department (JMG) in a statement confirmed that the department had yet to identify a geological explanation. "We will continue our studies on possible geological sources around Ipoh. So far, the cause has not been found," the statement read. JMG confirmed that the latest incident, which occurred about 10.30am on June 18, has been ruled out as resulting from quarry activity, bomb testing, or jet aircraft sonic booms. The statement said the sound was consistently heard across the same region, from Chemor, Klebang, and Meru in the north to Tambun and Gunung Rapat in the south. It also noted that similar unexplained sonic booms, often described as coming from the sky with explosive force, have been reported globally. "These mysterious sounds have occurred not only in Malaysia but also in countries like Japan, the United States, Bangladesh, Belgium, Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, Colombia, Finland, Vanuatu, Italy, Ireland and Indonesia. "They are often moderate to loud and occasionally strong enough to shake windows and walls of buildings," the statement said, adding that in Ipoh similar unexplained explosions were previously reported in 2012, 2018, and 2024, with no definitive source ever identified. On June 18, it was reported that people heard a booming sound and felt tremors in various areas around the state capital. According to social media posts and comments, users claimed to have felt the tremors in Chemor, Chepor and Tanah Hitam about 10.30am. On Oct 21 last year, a loud explosion and strong tremor was also reported in several parts of the city, including Tasek, Perak Stadium, Meru, Falim, Manjoi, Chemor and Sungai Siput at 11.06am.
