Dozens dead after fire at shopping centre in Iraq
Iraq's Ministry of Interior said in a statement that 61 people died, most of them from suffocation, in the fire that broke out late Wednesday in the city of Kut in the province of Wasit.

Among the dead were 14 bodies that remain unidentified, it said.
Civil defence teams were able to rescue more than 45 people who were trapped inside the building, the statement said.

The shopping centre, which had opened only a week earlier, was in a five-storey building that also contained a restaurant and supermarket.
The state-run Iraqi News Agency reported that people remained missing. Photographs and videos on local media showed the building fully engulfed in flames.

Provincial governor Mohammed al-Mayyeh declared three days of mourning. He said the cause of the fire is under investigation but that legal cases were filed against the building owner and shopping centre owner. He did not specify what the charges were.
'We assure the families of the innocent victims that we will not be lenient with those who were directly or indirectly responsible for this incident,' he said.
The results of the preliminary investigation will be released within 48 hours, he added.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani said in a statement that he had directed the interior minister to go to the site of the fire to investigate.

She was booked into Jefferson County Jail Friday morning but was released on a $30,000 bond soon after, records reviewed by FOX54 showed. Stanford, who was charged with a Class B felony, could face two to 20 years behind bars. 'This is a terrible tragedy that was completely avoidable and unnecessary. Our condolences go out to Ketorrius's family,' Carr said. The family's attorney, Courtney French, previously told ABC News KeTorrius' death was 'a heartbreaking and preventable tragedy.' 'Based upon a preliminary investigation, with the current extreme outside temperatures and the heat index of 108 degrees, the interior temperature of the car where KJ was trapped likely exceeded 150 degrees,' French said. Stanford was terminated after the child's death, the Alabama Department of Human Resources said. 'The provider has terminated their employee. Family's tribute to motorcyclist who died in crash in Rutland
The family of a 25-year-old man who died in a crash in Oakham said it "breaks our hearts" they will not see him fulfil his dreams. Cody Armstrong, 25, was riding his black Triumph motorcycle when it was involved in a single-vehicle crash in Rutland, at the roundabout where Stamford Road and the A6003 connect, on 20 Armstrong, from Wigston in Leicestershire, was pronounced dead at the scene. An inquest into his death has been opened by the coroner, the force added. Driver admits causing death of girl, four, in Birmingham crash
A man has pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving after a crash that killed a four-year-old girl in Yahia died after being hit by a car on Upper Highgate Street on 14 April 2024.
