Carlos Sainz Breaks Silence on Scary Brake Fire Incident in Austrian GP

Williams Racing driver Carlos Sainz has opened up on the brake fire incident that caused him to retire from the Austrian Grand Prix before it even started. This follows Sainz's complaints about the brakes on the previous day in qualifying, when he declared the car was undriveable.
The poor qualifying caused the Spaniard to start the race from P19. Unfortunately, he was unable to get his FW47 F1 car going in the formation lap until the yellow flags were waved. Once he set off, Sainz returned to the pit lane, only to find the rear brakes of his car on fire. Fortunately, the team was able to douse the flames in time.
Sainz's car was then taken into the garage, resulting in a DNS at the Austrian GP. Describing the problem, the 30-year-old driver suggested that the rear brakes on his car had engaged, which prevented him from setting off in the formation lap. He told the media:

Sainz's teammate Alex Albon also ended his race before the chequered flag fell. Williams had to call him back into the garage and retire the car, which marked his third consecutive DNF. The outfit is unsure about the root cause of the problem and has launched an investigation to prevent a similar incident.

Addressing the problems that plagued his and Albon's FW47, Sainz added:
"As a team also now we have had a problem with Alex, by the looks of it. So we have to find out why we are having so many problems both in qualifying and in the race. Because it's already several weekends that we have brake problems, engine problems, overheating. Sometimes we are a little bit weak in that sense."
Describing the Austrian GP as a disastrous race weekend, Sainz said:
"Yes, very poor, really. All weekend with problems, and now both cars are out. It's a bit of a disastrous weekend for us, but we have to grit our teeth and see how we can improve."

'Cost him the race': F1 driver facing the axe after incident with Oscar Piastri
Alpine driver Franco Colapinto is reportedly in danger of losing his spot on the F1 team, and a crazy incident involving Oscar Piastri in the Austrian Grand Prix won't do him any favours. Piastri finished second behind McLaren teammate Lando Norris, who cut the Aussie's lead in the championship to just 15 points. But it was nearly so much worse for Piastri, who came perilously close to not finishing the race when he was inadvertently forced off track by Colapinto on lap 55. Norris and Piastri were moving past the lapped Alpine driver, who moved out of the way for Norris but didn't appear to realise Piastri was also right there. Colapinto moved straight back into Piastri's path and forced the Aussie driver onto the grass, who managed to keep his composure and get back on track. Piastri narrowly avoided disaster, but the incident cost him precious ground on Norris and ruined his chances of overtaking his teammate late in the race. Piastri was then blocked by Colapinto's Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly on lap 57, and the Aussie driver was left fuming. He reportedly said on team radio: 'Alpine still manages to find a way to f*** me over all these years later." Piastri was referencing his controversial switch from Alpine to McLaren in 2022, when Alpine tried to block the move. F1 fans were left filthy with Colapinto's mistake, with many joking he's trying to take out as many Aussies as possible. The Argentine replaced Aussie driver Jack Doohan earlier this season, who was sacked after six races. But new reports have claimed Colapinto is also in the gun after failing to impress. 'Racing News 365' is reporting that Alpine are considering dumping Colapinto as well, with pressure intensifying after the incident with Piastri that could have caused massive embarrassment for the team had it affected the championship race even more. Alpine's plan was to give Colapinto five races to show what he's capable of, and those five races are now completed. The Argentine hasn't scored a single point, but neither did Doohan in his six races. Apline had seemingly backflipped on that plan and guaranteed Colapinto's immediate future, but their stance has reportedly now changed. According to 'Racing News 365': "Alpine has informed Colapinto and his management team that the Argentinian needed to start performing." Colapinto, who was hit with a five-second penalty during the race and one penalty point on his record afterwards, said: "I'm not really concerned. I think (team principal) Flavio Briatore has been very supportive and he has trust on the decision he's made. I, and the team as well, are focusing on improving the car. We looked a bit weak today, and we just need to take some steps forward. "The car has been a bit tricky for me to drive at the moment. It's not very consistent. It's quick, but it just didn't give me the confidence I needed to push in the high speed here. It was a tough weekend. Overall, we did some steps forward, but it felt like something didn't click." "It was a good battle. A bit on the edge at times and probably pushed the limits a bit far," he admitted afterwards. It was the moment the great McLaren battle could have all gone disastrously wrong. Oscar Piastri moved to pass McLaren team-mate Lando Norris but locked his wheels and veered perilously close to his championship rival. The Australian regained control to eventually finish immediately behind the British driver in an enthralling Austrian Grand Prix that tightened up the race to the world title. Piastri, who saw seven points chopped off his lead, which now stands at 15, said: "It was a good battle. A bit on the edge at times and probably pushed the limits a bit far. "But that's what we're here to do: try and race each other and try and fight for wins. And that's what we did today. It was close for me, but not quite enough." The moment, on lap 20, turn four, caused some angst among the McLaren management, who had to deal with Norris's more serious blunder in the previous race, in Montreal, when he collided with Piastri and put himself out of the running. The race-long duel made for gripping viewing, a point not lost on Piastri, who said: "[It was] intense. I hope it was good watching, because it was pretty hard work from the car. I tried my absolute best, and probably could have done a better job when I just got ahead momentarily. Norris called it a "beautiful one-two" finish for the team. "We had a great battle, that's for sure. A lot of stress, but a lot of fun. A nice battle, so well done to Oscar," he added. "Hopefully it was a nice one for everyone to watch but inside the car it was tough, especially when he was in DRS (drag reduction range). It was a perfect result for the team, a one-two is exactly what we want and we did it again so I'm very happy," For Norris, this was full redemption after his Canadian nightmare. It was very much the McLaren show and Christian Horner, the Red Bull chief, conceded Max Verstappen's bid to win a fifth consecutive world championship is all but over as he proclaimed a two-horse race for the title. Verstappen is 61 points behind Piastri and Horner said: "The buffer they have is significant. It looks very much like a two-horse race. They (McLaren) have got a cushion to the rest of the field. "What's truly impressive is when you look at how close Oscar is able to run behind Lando with a car fat on fuel, at the beginning of the race, and he's basically making love to his exhaust pipe lap after lap after lap and the tyres are not dying. "That is their advantage. I can't see any other car that would be able to follow that closely and not grain the front tyres or the rear tyres."
