JOHANNESBURG - Sixteen-year-old Luca Amerseder is preparing to cross the icy Atlantic Ocean from Robben Island to Cape Town, all in the name of charity and personal growth.
As part of his Grade 11 school project at Michael Mount Waldorf, Amerseder will be swimming to raise R20,000 for Genesis Ministries of South Africa.
' In my school, Michael Mount Waldorf, we have to pick a grade 11 project that needs us to write and research a historical and theoretical aspect on a topic, and embark on a practical part too. The choice needs to be something out of our comfort zone. I am not a swimmer at all, never liked it or practised it until a few months ago. So swimming was my choice, but open-water swimming in particular,' said Amerseder to Eyewitness News .
The Fourways, Johannesburg resident will be swimming the Robben Island Escape in Cape Town in May 2025, an approximately 8km cold Atlantic open water crossing with the hope of raising R20,000 for a Port Shepstone-based charity, Genesis Ministries of South Africa. ' I wanted to do something more unique, something that stretched me and was a real accomplishment. That's when my sister suggested the Robben Island Escape. I then felt the need to make the project even more meaningful and decided to do it for a charity. It was an obvious choice for me to do it for an organization that I had witnessed firsthand last year on a school community camp to Port Shepstone.'
Genesis Hope South Africa is a non-profit organisation that currently houses eight different ministries or initiatives, each one designed to target specific needs in our local community.
'I think Luca is nuts, you wouldn't find me swimming in cold, shark-infested waters, kidding. Luca is a young man who came with his school on a volunteer trip to work with our various programs.. To see the willingness of this young man to go the extra mile to raise funds and awareness for Genesis is humbling and a sense of encouragement for us in the future leaders of our country,' said Jono Downham from Genesis Hope South Africa. The organisation has three focus areas, which are care, sports and education and social justice, with the hope of bringing meaningful and lasting change to their surrounding communities. 'We are living in a time where for so many, hope is lost... Hope for a brighter future, hope for freedom from past challenges, hope for a sense of purpose and significance, Hope for opportunity. At Genesis Hope, we have the privilege to engage, to love, to walk alongside our fellow countrymen as they come from a place of darkness and disappear into a place of restoration and freedom,' said Downham.
Amerseder, who is 16 years old, told Eyewitness News that when his class visited Genesis Ministries, they were exposed to the many areas in which these people make a difference. 'For instance, we spent time with the little orphaned children or spent the day in the local community alongside the medical team, helping and caring for the sick. I noticed the attention to detail and the relationships that were formed between the nurses and the ill people and it made a big impression on me. So when I had to think of a charity, I was immediately sure that Genesis was who I would want to support.' Genesis Ministries of South Africa, through its Community Hope and Care programme, provides medical and emotional support to members of the surrounding community who have suffered from strokes, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, TB, cancer, post-operative conditions and chronic illnesses.
'I have created a back-a-buddy fundraising campaign in which the public, anonymously or not, can donate any amount towards the cause' said Amerseder.

North Korea has officially opened the sprawling Wonsan-Kalma beach resort on its eastern coast, a project long championed by leader Kim Jong Un. This suggests that Russians may be the first foreign visitors to enjoy the resort, reflecting the close relationship between North Korea and Russia. Experts believe the initial visitors will likely be North Korea's domestic elite, including party officials and high-ranking figures. This is due to the country's tightly controlled society and restricted domestic travel. Dr Edward Howell, a North Korea specialist at the University of Oxford, notes that Western tourists are unlikely to visit due to strict social controls and ideological restrictions within the country. Lim Eul-chul, a professor of North Korean Studies, sees the resort as part of Kim's broader strategy to seek economic breakthroughs through tourism. This is despite the country's ongoing hardships and international isolation. The resort's opening raises questions about its economic viability and who will visit. North Korea remains one of the world's poorest nations, with most resources devoted to military spending. Tourism is one of the few sectors that can generate foreign currency legally, especially under UN sanctions. However, the country's history with international tourism is fraught; the once-popular Mount Kumgang tours for South Koreans ended abruptly in 2008. This was after a fatal shooting incident, and cross-border tourism remains suspended. The Wonsan-Kalma resort is a curious symbol of contrast: a lavish, state-controlled tourist zone in a country where many face hunger and hardship. It reflects North Korea's attempts to project an image of development and normalcy despite its isolation. As Dr Howell puts it, 'Whether this resort will yield the economic benefits that Kim Jong Un desperately seeks in the long term is uncertain. Wonsan-Kalma is hardly a tourist hotspot to begin with'. Elliott Davies, director of Uri Tours, adds, 'North Korea has a niche appeal for those interested in offbeat travel experiences. It's fascinating to see a beach resort shaped by North Korea's unique cultural backdrop'. The Wonsan-Kalma beach resort is a grand showcase of North Korea's ambitions to boost tourism and earn foreign currency. Privileged domestic guests and Russian tourists will initially make up its visitor base. The prospect of Western or South African tourists visiting remains remote, given the country's political climate and travel restrictions. 'The opening of a major beach resort like Wonsan-Kalma helps to reinforce the state media narrative of Kim's people-first policy. It balances his focus on national defence,' said Rachel Minyoung Lee, a fellow at the Stimson Center. 'The ceremony of the Wonsan-Kalma resort reflects Kim Jong Un's vision of 'socialist civilisation'. It is part of his strategic effort to seek economic breakthroughs through tourism,' noted Lim Eul-chul. This development offers a rare glimpse into the secretive nation's attempts to engage with the outside world, albeit under strict control and limited access. For South Africans and others, it remains to be seen whether this ambitious project will become a genuine tourism destination or remain a symbol of Pyongyang's tightly managed image. Cape Town City may face life in NFD without talented youngsters
Cape Town City will now have to prepare for life in the Motsepe Foundation Championship after being officially ruled out of the promotion/relegation playoffs earlier this week, bringing a long and difficult season to a disappointing close. The Citizens, who ended the campaign 15th on the Premiership table, fell short when it mattered most and must now regroup for the challenges of second-tier football. Boks kick off international season with clash against Barbarians in Cape Town
CAPE TOWN - The highly anticipated clash between the Springboks and the Barbarians has kicked of at the DHL Stadium in Green Point, Cape Town. The match marks the start of the Springboks' five-month international season. Saturday evening's game against the British-based invitational rugby union club, renowned for bringing together top players from various clubs and countries, serves as the curtain-raiser for the Boks' busy season. The Boks' last victory over the Barbarians date back to December 2000 in Cardiff, where they secured a 41-31 win. EWN spoke to Bok fans, all brimming with excitement to watch the thrilling encounter. "My score prediction for this game will be Springboks 32, Barbarians, 14," said one fan. "I'm sure the excitement is felt across the entire country, I'm just a little concerned with the wet weather that we're experiencing in Cape Town today, Go Springboks," said another. "Glad rugby season is finally back, confident because you know we're playing on home turf, reigning world champions so I know the opposition is intimidated." This Sprinboks-Barbarians clash is the first of two significant rugby fixtures to be hosted in Cape Town. The Boks are also expected to do battle with Australia at DHL stadium on 23 August as part of their defence of the Rugby Championship.
