
Johari: Hire local TVET grads or no foreign workers for plantations
Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said industry players must provide proof of their efforts to hire TVET graduates to the ministry before they are permitted to recruit foreign workers.
'We are currently facing a situation where many industries are unwilling to hire graduates who have completed their training. They are reluctant to provide these students with the opportunity to gain practical experience because they prefer to take the easier route.
'Although the government has approved foreign workers for the plantation sector, I will not allow it unless industry players contribute to our local youth,' he said when met at the Dialog@MPIC session here today.
Johari said the ministry will train about 250 TVET students annually in the plantation sector, and they will be placed in the industry based on the specific needs of the industry players.
He said industry players must train these students until they become skilled and future specialists in the plantation sector.
'I want to commend Sime Darby and FGV for their dedicated initiatives to provide accommodation and decent salaries for young individuals who did not attend university. These youths can earn a salary of RM2,500 if they develop their skills and complete a TVET Level 3 qualification, and in another eight months, they could earn up to RM3,500.
'...we must support these students in developing their careers. Otherwise, we're abandoning these youths, and that's not what we promised. Some industry players even refuse to hire them, and that's why I want to enforce this prerequisite. Currently, we depend on nearly 260,000 foreign workers to manage our plantations,' he said.
Johari said the sector is vital as it represents the world's third-largest export industry, and within the national commodity sector, Malaysia exports approximately RM168 billion. He emphasised the need for industry players to take responsibility for mentoring and supporting these young talents.

PolyCC graduate employability hits 98.8% in 2024
MELAKA: Polytechnics and Community Colleges (PolyCC) continue to demonstrate the effectiveness of the national Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system, achieving an impressive graduate employability rate of 98.8 percent in 2024. Higher Education Ministry Secretary-General (KSU) Datuk Dr Anesee Ibrahim said the achievement was the result of strong collaboration between PolyCC and nearly 20,000 industries through the implementation of high-impact programmes such as Work-Based Learning, Structured Industrial Training, as well as Professional and Competency Certification. 'The academic programmes offered at PolyCC are ensured to gain accreditation and recognition from authorised professional bodies such as the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT), and professional certification agencies. 'This accreditation proves that Polytechnic and Community College graduates receive formal recognition from the government, both domestically and internationally, as well as from relevant industries,' he said in Ayer Keroh here today. He was speaking at the 22nd Convocation Ceremony of Politeknik Melaka, which was also attended by Dr Shamsuri Abdullah, Deputy Director-General (Planning) of the Department of Polytechnic and Community College Education. Elaborating further, Anesee said efforts to produce well-rounded and entrepreneurially-minded graduates were also being emphasised, with 119 entrepreneurship incubators successfully established this year, involving 476 students and generating nearly RM800,000 in sales. 'Students are exposed to various programmes during their studies, including skills competitions, entrepreneurship activities, research, volunteerism, and sports, to shape holistic and dynamic character,' he said. He added that PolyCC is also actively forging partnerships with various international institutions from countries such as Russia, Japan, Korea, Türkiye, China and Indonesia, to strengthen academic and research collaboration in line with the ministry's focus on the internationalisation of higher education. 'This move aligns with the ministry's aspiration to strengthen Malaysia's position as a world-class higher education hub, while elevating PolyCC as a leading TVET institution at the international level,' he said. Anesee noted that PolyCC now stands as a premier TVET institution with 36 polytechnics and 106 community colleges, involving nearly 15,000 staff and 97,000 active students, including in Melaka, which hosts two polytechnics and six community colleges. 'This year, a total of 32,087 graduates from polytechnics and community colleges will have been or are being celebrated in 28 convocation ceremonies held nationwide,' he said. - Bernama

Tariff Cut by US Won't Affect Malaysia's Commodity Competitiveness, Minister Says
The US' 19% import tariff on Malaysian goods will not affect the global competitiveness of the country's commodities, Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said. He noted that the revised rate, down from the previous 25%, remains fair and on par with regional peers, including Indonesia, the world's top palm oil producer, which is also subject to the same tariff. 'Indonesia is number one, and we're number two in palm oil. They're also subject to a 19% tariff, so this is reasonable and fair,' he said when asked about the potential impact of the tariff on Malaysia's commodity exports. The revised US tariff came into effect at 12:01am on Aug 1, 2025, with a seven-day grace period granted for goods already in transit to mitigate immediate supply chain disruptions.

Tailor strategy to demographic, geographic realities, Johari tells Umno
PASIR GUDANG: Umno must adopt a dynamic, geographically focused strategy to regain public support, particularly from the youth, said party vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. He said the party's current approach needs to move beyond uniform outreach and be tailored to the demographic and geographic realities of each constituency, especially in urban areas such as Kuala Lumpur and Johor Baru. "You can't apply the same strategy across the board anymore. Urban areas require a different kind of engagement than rural ones," Johari said at a press conference today after officiating the Pasir Gudang Umno division delegates' conference. Also present was fellow Umno vice-president and Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, who heads the Pasir Gudang division. Johari, who is also the Plantation and Commodities Minister and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, said 40 per cent of Malaysian voters are now youth. He added that most young voters are educated, analytical, and integrity-driven in how they assess political candidates. "They evaluate candidates differently than those who once voted for the founding fathers or for big infrastructure," he said. "Campaigns now must match the mindset of the constituency, not just rely on legacy methods." Johari said the party has increased cooperation with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) as part of a broader strategy to connect with younger voters, a demographic previously under-engaged. "Now you see Umno programmes involving more NGOs. This didn't happen before," he said. "Many of our activities today are youth-focused, but it's not just about organising events. It has to fit the context of each area." He said urban centres demand digital-savvy, grassroots-driven outreach, whereas rural constituencies may still favour personal touch and service delivery. Johari also said there is a need to understand rival parties' strengths when formulating Umno's tactical approach. "Success lies not just in how dynamic Umno becomes, but also in how well we assess the strengths of those contesting against us," he said. He called for fresh political thinking as the party prepares for the next general election, warning that outdated models could cost Umno the support it needs to regain ground. "We must think differently if we want to win back the hearts of voters, especially the young," he added.
