Mortal Kombat 2 director teases the return of characters that were killed in the first movie: "There are ways to bring dead characters back"
As the first look at Karl Urban's Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2 just dropped, we also got another big update about the upcoming sequel. The confirmed cast includes two returning stars, Josh Lawson and Max Huang, even though their characters, Kano and Kung Lao, were killed in the 2021 movie.
Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat co-creator and head of gaming developer NetherRealm Studios, teased the surprising return of these characters during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, and offered a mysterious explanation.
"I can say Josh Lawson doesn't play Kano's twin," Boon clarified, while pointing at the Mortal Kombat lore from the video games to argue how this storyline could make sense in the story. "We've killed a number of characters who are in Mortal Kombat 1 and our latest games. So we deal with spirits and the NetherRealm and things like that. There are ways to bring dead characters back," he added.
Along with Lawson's Kano and Huang's Lao, Mortal Kombat 2 features the return of Lewis Tan's Cole Young, Hiroyuki Sanada's Scorpion, and Jessica McNamee's Sonya Blade, with Jade (Tati Gabrielle), Queen Sindel (Ana Thu Nguyen), and Quan Chi (Damon Herriman) joining the cast for the first time.
The team behind the ultra-violent sequel worked to "maximize everything", to "just build on where we were and then make it significantly more intense, bigger in scale, bigger in variation, bigger across the board really as a cinematic experience," director Simon McQuoid told EW.
"We go to lots of different realms, so that in itself gives the film a very distinct and varied visual approach," McQuoid continued, adding about the vision of the upcoming film: "What I realized was go bigger, go bolder, don't hold back, and really feed off the history of Mortal Kombat more. Just let it rip, and that's what we've done."
Mortal Kombat 2 is set to be released in cinemas on October 24, 2025. For more, check out the other upcoming video game movies coming your way very soon.

New on Netflix August 2-8: only four new shows and movies hit Netflix this week but one is huge

So let's find you something worth watching on Netflix this week... Beyond the Bar Starting the week off (on a Saturday, which is rare for Netflix) is the new Korean drama series Beyond the Bar. This seems to have a strange release schedule which mirrors its Korean release: an episode every Saturday and Sunday for several weeks. Beyond the Bar is set in Korea's legal word, and it's about a young rookie lawyer who starts to work for a big law firm. He finds his strong sense of justice challenged by the intricacies and moral gray areas of the work he has to do. Premieres on Saturday, August 2 SEC Football: Any Given Saturday Netflix subscribers are no stranger to sports documentary series, with a new one landing every other week, and this time around there's SEC Football: Any Given Saturday which releases on Tuesday, August 5. This series follows college footballers in the South Eastern Conference (hence, SEC) over the course of their 2024 season. You'll get to see players on the pitch and relaxing between games behind-the-scenes, to see what it's like being a college football player. Releases on Tuesday, August 5 Wednesday season 2 The smash-hit TV show returns when Wednesday season 2 releases; the first four episodes release on Thursday, August 6 and the last four on Thursday, September 3. This Addams Family prequel follows young Wednesday Addams as she attends the Nevermore Academy and season 2 sees her attend another year of school. She also has to solve a mystery along the way. A long list of new faces join her along the way, with many recognizable celebrity actors joining the cast. Part 1 releases on Wednesday, August 6 Stolen: Heist of the Century The second Netflix documentary this year about a jewel theft, Stolen: Heist of the Century is a doc movie about a well-known noughties crime that releases on Friday, August 8. Stolen: Heist of the Century looks at a 2003 robbery in Antwerp which saw hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of diamonds stolen in a surprisingly capable heist. No-one's ever been sure how the crime was actually committed but according to Netflix, that's finally going to change with the movie revealing it for the first time. Adam Scott recalls this A-list actor getting ‘suddenly famous': ‘It was so crazy'
Adam Scott was totally buggin'. The actor, 52, revealed what it was like to watch his college friend, Paul Rudd, shoot to stardom after the cult classic 'Clueless' came out in 1995. 'When Paul got that job, that's when everything changed and one of my friends was suddenly famous,' Scott recalled while on Entertainment Weekly's 'The Awardist' podcast. 'It was so crazy. Spider-Man: Brand New Day's Tom Holland Costume Reveal Is A Serious Upgrade
What Fantastic Four box office drop? We're talking about Spider-Man now! In an effort to shift the conversation to Marvel's next, must-hit film, we're now seeing reveals and rumors left and right about Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a return to huge-grossing trilogy that is shifting things in a number of ways. First and foremost, after teasing it yesterday, Marvel just had Tom Holland walk out in his full Spidey costume (minus mask) to drive the internet wild. It's a very, very sharp look, a combination of the raised webbing of the Maguire and Garfield eras, mixed with elements of his final suit from No Way Home, though with more muted reds and blues. Of course, Holland's Spider-Man has had many suits through the years, including the Iron Spider and a black stealth suit, but it's certainly a departure more generally from his 'base' suit, especially the one he had initially in Homecoming: Spider-Man has had dozens if not even hundreds of different suit variants over the years, but I find the franchise can be a little too obsessed with them at times. I'm hoping he has this new suit, it's cool (big webshooters, too, interestingly) and we move on and focus on the rest of the movie rather than some sub-storyline about how he gets a new one. If we're doing symbiotes…sure, that's different. But we're not doing that, we know that much. The other news this week is the revelation from the trades that the film may also soon be recruiting Bruce Banner/The Hulk and Scorpion to appear, the latter being played by Michael Mando in Homecoming eight years ago, and the former, 'Smart Hulk,' not being seen since the She-Hulk Disney Plus series. Before this, we already knew officially that Jon Bernthal's The Punisher was showing up in Brand New Day, and the word is there will be some sort of fight between him, Spidey and Hulk before they figure out they're not actually enemies, or something like that (hopefully, Savage Hulk, not Smart Hulk, is present). In addition to this, there is a persistent rumor that previously-announced cast member, Stranger Things' Sadie Sink, may be playing Gwen Stacy, but that as of yet remains unconfirmed. It would be the second time a famously red-haired actress played Stacy instead of Mary Jane (the first being Emma Stone, opposite Andrew Garfield's Peter). So, confirmed: This suit and Punisher. Likely happening: Hulk and Scorpion. Who knows: Who Sadie Sink is playing. But no doubt we're going to start hearing more soon. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram.
