Euro 2025: France edges closer to place in quarter-finals after resounding defeat of Wales
Clara Mateo was involved in three goals as France closed in on the Women's European Championship quarterfinal places with a 4-1 win over Wales on Wednesday, July 9. The Paris FC forward opened the scoring, was fouled for the penalty that Kadidiatou Diani converted, and then set up Amel Majri for the third goal. France captain Grace Geyoro sealed the result in the 63 rd. It was France's 10 th consecutive win this year. France tops Group D with six points, three more than England and the Netherlands, while Wales remains bottom with zero points after two games on its tournament debut. England revived its title defense following its opening loss to France by beating the Netherlands 4-0 earlier Wednesday. England plays Wales in their final group match on Sunday. France will win the group if it avoids defeat against the Dutch at the same time. "Nothing is set. We know when we have a game, we play it to win," said Majri, the player of the match after her first European Championship appearance. The Lyon great missed Euro 2017 through injury and the last edition in 2022 after the birth of her daughter. "I've always looked forward to playing at a Women's Euro, so I'm really happy," Majri said. "It was a great performance as well from Clara Mateo." France coach Laurent Bonadei made a host of changes to his lineup with only four players including the goalkeeper starting again from the 2-1 win over England. Alice Sombath and newcomer Thiniba Samoura, both 21, formed France women's youngest ever central-defensive partnership at a major tournament. Oldest player ever to score goal Mateo, another change, fired the favorites into an early lead with a fine finish after a corner, but Jess Fishlock equalized in the 14 th when she prodded the ball inside the right post. It was Wales' first goal at a European Championship – scored by the team's oldest player. UEFA said Fishlock, 38 years and 176 days old, became the oldest player ever to score at the tournament, beating the record previously held by Northern Ireland's Julie Nelson, who was 37 years and 33 days old when she scored at the last edition. "I guess I'll take that as a compliment!" Fishlock told broadcaster ITV. "I couldn't get these accolades without my entire team behind me, so I'm very grateful, and maybe after the tournament I'll let that sink in a little bit more." Welsh celebrations were unbridled and the goal seemed to knock the French players off their stride. It took some time before they recovered. Then Ceri Holland conceded a penalty for a foul on Mateo in the 44 th, and Diani scored with a weakly taken spot kick that went in off Wales goalkeeper Safia Middleton-Patel's legs before the break. A mistake from Middleton-Patel after the interval led to the third goal with Mateo winning the ball off the goalkeeper and laying it back for Majri to score in the 53 rd. Middleton-Patel should have stopped Diani's cross, but it fell for Geyoro to complete the scoring.

Farrell on the bench for Lions against Australia-New Zealand
British and Irish Lions' Owen Farrell looks on after the rugby match between the British and Irish Lions and the ACT Brumbies in Canberra on July 9 The former England captain is set to end a period in the international wilderness as the Lions continue their nine-game tour with their fifth and final warm-up on Saturday. Farrell made the dash to Australia last week after his father, Lions coach Andy Farrell, summoned him as cover when utility back Elliot Daly broke his arm. The 33-year-old, on his fourth Lions tour, earned the last of his 112 Test caps at the 2023 World Cup, and is coming off an underwhelming and injury-plagued season with French club Racing 92. The Lions are unbeaten in four matches in Australia after wins over four Super Rugby sides, including 36-24 against ACT Brumbies on Wednesday in Canberra. But they endured a sloppy performance against the Brumbies, with notable issues around the breakdown. Numerous changes The Lions have made numerous changes with Tadhg Beirne to take the captaincy reins, while young star Henry Pollock returns. Scrum-half Ben White will make his first start for the Lions. The Australia-New Zealand side, the first time the powerhouses have joined forces since 1989, will be led jointly by David Havili and Lukhan Salakaia-Loto. Coach Les Kiss picked 17 internationals in his matchday 23 for Saturday's final warm-up game for the Lions before they face Australia in the opening Test on July 19 in Brisbane. "We are in a great position just over a week out from the first Test," coach Farrell said. "The players now have another chance to put in a strong team performance and put a hand up for selection for the Test matches against the Wallabies. "Les Kiss has assembled a strong squad with lots of international experience and we know that he will have them well organised and they will bring a lot of physicality to the contest.' France make 10 changes to starting side for second All Blacks Test
Ten-cap hooker Gaetan Barlot was retained in the side and was named captain, with experienced centre Gael Fickou left out of the matchday 23. Four of the five who played in the Top 14 final on June 29 are starting along with Leo Barre, who arrived late in New Zealand due to a thigh injury. Barlot, 28, will lead an inexperienced team with an average of only four caps each among the starters. The most experienced French players such as prop Rabah Slimani (58 caps) and wing Gabin Villiere (19) were left out of the 23 altogether, while Cameron Woki (31) and Romain Taofifenua (55) will again start on the bench. "It's a rotation for stimulation, competition," Galthie told reporters. "We brought the players to the end of the world. They have to play. We absolutely wanted to play them as quickly as possible." New Zealand coach Scott Robertson made just three changes to his starting side, two of which were injury enforced. Captain Scott Barrett was ruled out with a torn calf, and wing Sevu Reece was concussed. Patrick Tuipulotu and Caleb Clarke, respectively, replace them with Rieko Ioane switching to the right wing, while wing Timoci Tavatavanawai will debut off the bench. France (15-1): Leo Barre; Theo Attissogbe, Nicolas Depoortere, Pierre-Louis Barassi, Emilien Gailleton; Joris Segonds, Nolann Le Garrec; Esteban Abadie, Jacobus Van Tonder, Pierre Bochaton; Matthias Halagahu, Joshua Brennan; Georges-Henri Colombe, Gaetan Barlot, Baptiste Erdocio. © 2025 AFP
