BRO builds Bailey bridge in Maoist commander Hidma's village, connecting Chhattisgarh's Sukma to mainstream
For the villagers of Puvarti and surrounding hamlets like Silger, Duler, and Elmaguda, the bridge brings relief from decades of isolation, especially during the monsoon, when water-logged terrain made travel nearly impossible and these regions turned into islands. Locals had to wade through overflowing streams and rough jungle trails, often risking their lives to reach markets or health centres.
'The 15-meter-long steel bridge, a critical component of the Silger–Puvarti road corridor, now links over a dozen remote villages to district headquarters, marking a new era of accessibility, even during peak monsoon,' said Sukma SP Kiran Chavan.
SP added, 'The bridge has been constructed by BRO in very short time. This is not just a physical bridge. It will be a lifeline for the people of Puvarti, Hidma's village, and surrounding hamlets that were previously cut off from basic services. It now directly connects these villages to Sukma and Dantewada via Jagargunda, transforming the development landscape.'
Officials in Bastar told TOI, 'This marks a crucial milestone in India's push to integrate conflict-affected tribal interiors into the mainstream.

The area had remained under heavy Maoist control for over four decades. Now, BRO's swift construction, carried out under tight security cover, has for the first time enabled all-weather movement of security forces, essential goods, traders, and civilians between once fiercely Maoist-affected regions Silger, Puvarti, and Jagargunda.

The bridge's completion is part of the component of Rs 66 crore central government project, which includes the construction of 64 km of all-weather roads across Naxal-affected Sukma.
Of this, a 51 km road stretch from Elmaguda to Puvarti is being constructed at a cost of Rs 53 crore, directly benefiting villages like Silger, Timmapuram, Gollakonda, Tekulguda, Jabbagatta, and Tumalpad.
'During monsoon, this entire belt was completely cut off. Now, with this bridge, not only will civilians move freely, but so will development,' a local official said.
Until recently, this area was dominated by Maoist leaders Hidma and Deva, with BRO construction virtually impossible due to IED threats and ambushes.
However, after security forces established a forward base camp in the region from last year, Maoist presence shrunk to pockets.
What is a Bailey Bridge?
A Bailey Bridge is a modular, pre-fabricated truss bridge made from steel, joined by nuts and bolts, allowing rapid deployment in difficult terrains. Invented during the 1940s by Donald Bailey for military use, it is now widely used by armed forces and emergency relief agencies. The bridge doesn't require heavy machinery for installation and is ideal for remote or flood-affected areas, border zones, and disaster recovery efforts.
The Bailey bridge, built using pre-fabricated steel segments, is capable of withstanding the load of heavy military and commercial vehicles.

Drop in admissions in Kendriya Vidyalayas: Govt in Lok Sabha
There has been a decline in admissions in Kendriya Vidyalayas, as per a written reply by the Ministry of Education's Department of School Education and Literacy. The question asked by BK Parthasarathi from the Telugu Desam Party and Sudha R from Congress highlights that there are 1280 Kendriya Vidyalayas functioning in the country, with 13,50,518 lakh students studying in those educational institutions. In the academic session 2020-21, 13,87,763 lakh students were enrolled in KVs, while as of the 2024-25 academic session, 13,50,518 lakh students are studying. Comparing the two academic sessions, there is a clear drop of 37,245 lakh students, resulting in a drop of 2.86 per cent (approx) Comparing the 2024-25 and 2023-24 academic sessions, a clear drop of 39,042 students across the country is seen. The highest admission rate in the last five years in KVs has been in 2021-22, with 14,29,434 students enrolled. The Ministry also stated that the Government of India has approved the opening of 85 new KVs under the civil, defence sectors across the country in December 2024. Additionally, there will be an expansion of one existing KV Shivamogga, Karnataka, by adding two additional sections in all the classes. The total estimated cost for these initiatives is approximately Rs 5872.08 crore (approx.). The written reply stated that the construction and approval of the KVs in India is a continuous process. New KV proposals can be initiated by Ministries or Departments of the Government of India, state governments, or Union Territory (UT) Administrations. Such proposals have to include some essential resources—like land and temporary accommodation—as per prescribed norms. Approval for establishing new KVs is subject to clearance by the competent authority, following established procedures. KVs are not opened based on the boundaries of states, UTs, Parliamentary Constituencies, or districts. Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) are established primarily to meet the educational requirements of children of transferable Central Government employees, including those in defence and Para-military forces, central autonomous bodies, central public sector undertakings (PSUs), and central institutes of higher learning (IHLs). These schools offer a uniform curriculum nationwide to ensure continuity in education.

Awami Ittehad Party says its jailed J&K MP Er Rashid will attend parliament tomorrow
SRINAGAR: Jailed MP from Jammu and Kashmir and Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) president Er Rashid would attend the parliament session tomorrow to participate in the debate on 'Operation Sindoor'. His party has decided to bear one-day travel expenses of the jailed MP to attend the parliament. Er Rashid, who was arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) case in 2019 and is lodged in Delhi's Tihar jail, has been allowed by a special NIA court to attend the ongoing monsoon session of the parliament in custody for 12 days from July 24 to August 4. The court said he is subject to bearing the travel cost, returning to jail in the evening, and not having access to cell phones to speak to the press. Er Rashid, who won the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat last year by defeating two political heavy weights --- Omar Abdullah of National Conference and Sajjad Gani Lone of Peoples Conference --- has been asked by the court to pay Rs 1.45 lakh per day in travel expenses. AIP chief spokesperson Inam Un Nabi said Baramulla parliamentary constituency in north Kashmir, represented by Er Rashid, includes several areas along the Line of Control (LoC) that were most directly impacted by 'Operation Sindoor' and he (Er Rashid) would participate in the debate on 'Operation Sindoor'. 'The pain, suffering and ground realities of these people must be represented in Parliament. They need a voice and Er Rashid is that voice,' Inam said.

Dhami asks Uttarakhand officials to make anti-conversion law more stringent
Dehradun, Jul 28 (PTI) Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday expressed concern over recent incidents of attempted conversions in the state and asked officials to make the anti-conversion law more stringent. Proper counselling and guidance should be provided to people caught in the trap of elements indulging in conversion, Dhami said at a meeting held with senior officials at the secretariat. 'In view of recent incidents, immediate steps should be taken to make the anti-conversion law more stringent, " he said. In a joint effort, the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand police recently arrested six individuals linked to the Chhangur gang, an international religious conversion racket operating out of Pakistan and Dubai. Noting that Operation Kalanemi — targeting people impersonating saints, cheating the public and defaming Sanatan — which was launched earlier this month, has been successful in curbing such elements. He said the campaign, which is aimed at people hurting the image of Sanatan, needs to be carried forward. He said an SIT should be constituted at the state police headquarters level to monitor the campaign. 'Uttarakhand is a border state as well as the sacred land of Sanatan. Therefore, any attempt to change its demography should strictly be thwarted," he said, asking the police to keep an eye on such suspicious activities. The Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion Act, amended in 2022, prohibits religious conversion through misrepresentation, force, undue influence, coercion, allurement or any fraudulent means. It is a cognisable and non-bailable offence, punishable by imprisonment of three to ten years and a fine of at least Rs 50,000. Additionally, the court may order the accused to pay compensation of up to Rs 5 lakh to the victim.
