MAIWP distributes over RM314 million in zakat funds to asnaf as of April 21
MAIWP chairman Syed Kamarulzaman Syed Kabeer said the distribution was carried out through various initiatives and aid clusters across the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Labuan.
These include the welfare aid cluster, education aid cluster, and the Wakalah programme, which collectively aim to improve the quality of life and opportunities for the asnaf community.
Earlier today, MAIWP hosted 600 asnaf individuals, including children, at the Jalinan Aidilfitri Bersama Asnaf event held at the Dewan Perdana Felda.
Also present was Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar.
In his speech, Mohd Na'im emphasised that MAIWP's ability to provide such large-scale assistance is a result of the continuous support from the Muslim community, who contribute zakat through MAIWP and the Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ-MAIWP).
'This proves that a transparent and efficient zakat ecosystem can be a major driver of social justice and the well-being of the people in the city,' he said.
During the event, MAIWP presented a special contribution of RM200 and souvenirs worth RM120 each to 400 asnaf recipients. In addition, 200 children received duit raya of RM50 each, amounting to a total of RM138,000 in zakat funds.
Also present at the ceremony were Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Senator Dr Zulkifli Hasan, and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee.

MAHAR condemns targeted killings of journalists in Gaza crisis
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Humanitarian Aid and Relief (MAHAR) has expressed deep outrage over the intensifying atrocities in Gaza and the recent killing of six journalists in an Israeli airstrike on Tuesday. In a statement on Thursday, MAHAR described Gaza as a 'black hole for information,' where journalists are being starved, hunted, and silenced amid the relentless destruction of homes, schools, and hospitals. The organisation highlighted that medical supplies are nearly exhausted and that aid agencies are being denied safe access to affected areas. 'When journalists are killed, entire stories die with them, stories of starving infants, displaced families, destroyed hospitals, and daily terror that never makes it to the global screen. This is not just a humanitarian crisis. This is information warfare, and the frontline soldiers are unarmed local reporters with cameras and phones. 'MAHAR asserts that these acts are a direct violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions and constitute crimes against humanity,' the statement read. MAHAR has called for an urgent global action, including an independent international investigation into the killings of journalists in Gaza and protection for all journalists operating in war zones, especially local correspondents. It also demanded immediate humanitarian access and ceasefire, to stop the starvation and mass civilian killings, sanctions and diplomatic consequences on those committing these violations, as well as full media freedom and unrestricted international coverage inside Gaza. 'This is a call to governments, international institutions, media houses, and every person of conscience. Do not let the world go blind and do not let Gaza be buried without testimony,' read the statement. Meanwhile, MAHAR president Jismi Johari said journalists are not merely collateral in this war; they are being deliberately targeted to erase evidence, accountability, and global consciousness. 'The Israeli regime is not only killing civilians, but also the truth. Every time a journalist is killed, we lose a witness. And when all witnesses are gone, genocide walks free. 'Malaysia, the Muslim world, and humankind must not be silent,' he said. - Bernama

Pre-marriage course speakers must be legally literate to build Syariah-compliant families
PUTRAJAYA: Speakers involved in Islamic Pre-Marriage Course in Malaysia must possess a clear and thorough understanding of Syariah law to ensure accurate, meaningful instructions, which go beyond emotional appeal, to strengthen participants' grasp of Islamic legal principles. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, said that marriage education is no longer a mere formality, but a crucial gateway to building principled, Syariah-compliant, and resilient families. 'So these speakers must be legally literate. The knowledge they share should not be general or emotional alone, but should enhance participants' readiness to establish a family that upholds Islamic rights and responsibilities,' he said when opening the National Convention of Islamic Pre-Marriage Course Speakers 2025 here today. In his speech, Mohd Na'im emphasised that the MBKPI (Integrated Module for Islamic Pre-Marriage Course) speakers are not only educators, but also spiritual guides (da'i) and mentors (murabbi) entrusted with shaping the future of Muslim families. 'Fulfil this trust guided by the five core values of al-Falah, namely knowledge, integrity, excellence, consistency and sincerity. These are the hallmarks of a true preacher, who doesn't just deliver content but inspires a shared vision of a harmonious society,' the minister said. Mohd Na'im further stressed that an understanding of Islamic family law must align with Maqasid Syariah, as defined by Imam al-Shatibi, which is to protect the religion, life, intellect, lineage, and property. 'The MBKPI syllabus, which covers topics such as guardianship (wali), maintenance (nafkah), and divorce, reflects these objectives in a contemporary context. Therefore, the speaker's role is not merely theoretical; it is about guiding participants to live as faithful Muslims and responsible citizens,' he added. This year's convention gathered 1,674 registered speakers from across the country who are actively involved in community education through Islamic pre-marriage courses. - Bernama
