Whenever Manie Libbok pulls on a Stormers jersey, magic is bound to happen on the rugby field.
However, his departure from the Stormers – confirmed in a video by the Cape side – to Japan is not just the end of a brilliant chapter of his rugby career in the Mother City.
But it could also end up in a flyhalf crisis for the team in the United Rugby Championship and Champions Cup.
For a franchise that rebuilt itself around flair, unpredictability and a free-flowing attacking game-plan when they nearly went bankrupt, losing the conductor of that orchestra is more than just a setback; it is a massive blow to their ambitions of winning titles in the future.

Let's be blunt: the Stormers' attacking identity doesn't function without a flyhalf who can pull the strings and improvise on the attack.
Libbok isn't just any No 10, though.
He has been at the forefront of their resurgence since joining from the Bulls and Sharks, two franchises that failed to unlock the full potential of his talent.
At the Stormers, he flourished, and there is a simple reason for that: the Cape side embraced his strengths and built their model around how he plays, not the other way around. Now, with Libbok exiting, the system may collapse.
Manie Libbok expected to be announced by Kintetsu Liners pretty soon. #rugbyjp #SaffasAbroad pic.twitter.com/5xdYGEVyGi — Darren (@SaffasRugby) June 24, 2025
Libbok's ability is rare and when harnessed properly, he is a title-winning flyhalf on any given day.
He steps off his right and left foot, and his passing game is sublime – whether to the left or right of the field, he has world-class vision on the attack even in pressure situations.
He doesn't just run plays – he reads the game in real time, and almost bends it to his will when on song. Replacing that will be difficult, and it was evident when he was injured last season.
Newbie Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu is promising, and no doubt the future of the Stormers.
However, he's raw, and it was clear in the Cape side's flat performance in the URC quarter-finals against the Glasgow Warriors recently.
End of an era in Cape Town. 💔
The Stormers confirm nine player exits, including URC-winning pivot Manie Libbok! Reports link him to Japan's Liners.

He failed to spark his side, and only when Libbok entered the fray as the flyhalf did the team look better.
If Feinberg-Mngomezulu is the heir apparent, he will need time.
But time is a luxury that the Stormers don't necessarily have in the extremely competitive European rugby competitions.
Worst of all, Feinberg-Mngomezulu is injury-prone, and should he go down again for an extended period, they will be in real trouble with Libbok away.
Other options in the squad, like Jurie Matthee, lack Libbok's instinctive flair and resilience, especially under pressure.
Remember the 2022 URC campaign?
Libbok didn't just step up, he owned the biggest stage, and that took his career to another level. Not many players can do that.
Stormers director of rugby John Dobson built the team model on movement, unpredictability and creative offloads – hot-potato rugby, as some call it.
Without a dynamic pivot to link the backs and forwards and dictate their transition from defence to attack, the model will feel it.
Losing that impetus could see the team take a more structured and conservative approach with other flyhalves, except maybe Feinberg-Mngomezulu.
That is not what supporters would want to see. They want the flair, the fast-paced action and the fun that sets the team apart from other sides.

Rassie Erasmus the bearer of good news as Springboks' injury infirmary starts clearing out

FILE - Springboks flank Pieter-Steph du Toit is set to pull on the Springboks jersey next week for the time since November. Image: Ayanda Ndamane / Independent Newspapers Despite losing Jean Kleyn to injury after the Barbarians clash, the Springboks' injury infirmary is starting to clear out, with a host of key players set to return over the next week. The Springboks have already welcomed back big lock Lood de Jager last week after a two-year absence, while fullback Damian Willemse, scrumhalf Faf de Klerk and second-row legend Eben Etzebeth is in the matchday squad for this Saturday's first Test against Italy in Pretoria. But next weekend will see the return of the great Pieter-Steph du Toit, who had been on the sidelines since the Springboks' 2024 November Tour match against England. Du Toit, who is contracted to Toyota Verblitz, missed the Japanese League One season after undergoing shoulder surgery. Coach Rassie Erasmus revealed that the current World Player of the Year is in line to be fit for the second Italy Test in Gqeberha. Quicksilver Sharks scrumhalf Grant Williams is also set to feature next weekend after missing the Durban side's United Rugby Championship playoff matches and the Boks' games against the Barbarians and this Saturday's first Test against Italy. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading The good news for Nelson Mandela Bay rugby fans is that their hometown hero Siya Kolisi also set to return to action in the second Test after a neck injury kept him out of the Barbarians game. The Bok captain was also not considered for this weekend because of an Achilles niggle. Erasmus, however, confirmed his captain should be ready to lead the team out next weekend. 'Siya had a stiff neck, but it's all cleared up. Now he has an Achilles issue. It's not a strain, but he is really stiff there. We just want to make sure he is okay,' Erasmus told a news conference in Pretoria ahead of the Loftus Versfeld clash. 'There isn't a player who will play more than eight or nine matches this year, so we just want to make sure his achilles is 100 percent ready. But it's nothing serious, he had some scans to confirm it. Siya should be back next week.' The only long-term injury concern is tighthead Frans Malherbe, who is expected to be sidelined for the rest of the year. But the Springboks have plenty of cover at tighthead in the big frames of Wilco Louw and Vincent Koch, who has been selected to take on Italy this weekend. Erasmus confirmed yesterday that Kleyn suffered a knee injury against the Barbarians and could be on the sidelines for the next six weeks. Jesse Kriel will continue to lead the Boks in Kolisi's absence, becoming the 67th player to lead the Boks in a Test match when he takes the field on his old stomping ground this weekend.

John Dobson says Stormers door will always be open for departing Manie Libbok

Flyhalf Manie Libbok will depart the Stormers with their blessing and the door remains open for him to return to Cape Town in the future Image: BackpagePix Manie Libbok leaves with the blessing of the Stormers, and the Cape side will welcome him back with open arms once he leaves Japan and returns to South Africa. Those were the words of the director of rugby John Dobson after he confirmed that Libbok would leave the side he helped to United Rugby Championship (URC) glory in the inaugural season. Libbok will reportedly take up a contract with the Kintetsu Liners after being released early from his deal with the Stormers. It stretched up until 2027, but with the emergence of Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, they decided to part ways with the gifted flyhalf. Now, they only have Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Jurie Matthee as flyhalves in the senior system, with utility back Damian Willemse who can also provide cover in the pivotal position. Willemse and Feinberg-Mngomezulu will likely both be away with the Springboks during the start of the new URC season when they face champions Leinster. It means the Stormers will rely on Matthee to hold the fort. 'Manie is a big loss,' Dobson said on Friday. 'We had a fantastic journey with him, and we would've liked to keep him. However, there are two aspects to consider. Sacha, and with good reason, is absolutely adamant about playing flyhalf and he is entitled to it. I just saw the last couple of weeks, and it was tricky, but none of them are conditioned to be a number two flyhalf. 'Sacha also doesn't want to be a guy who comes off the bench as a fullback. It was going to be tricky. At the same time, Manie received an offer from Japan that would be described as eye-watering. It would change his whole family.' Dobson says they had a good deal with Libbok until 2027 and the flyhalf was prepared to respect it. But he said (in their conversation) to look at the numbers (of the Japanese deal) and what it could be for me and my family. Dobson added that they didn't feel it was the right thing to stand in his way and tell him that he couldn't take up the offer in Japan.

Hollywoodbets Durban July: LATE scratching

See It Again was scratched on Tuesday morning from Saturday, 5 July's Hollywoodbets Durban July due to an abnormal blood count. The five-year-old son of Twice Over was only paraded at the official public gallops last Thursday due to a temperature spike. A disappointed trainer Michael Roberts said that it was hard enough getting a horse into the big race and now having to scratch was a bitter pill to swallow. 'We have to act in the best interests of the horse and we hope to have him ready for the Champions Cup at the end of the season,' he added. RELATED | Every previous Hollywoodbets Durban July winner since 1897 As a result of the scratching, Sean Tarry's Litigation was scratched from the Grade 3 Magical Zulu Kingdom 2 200 and gets a run in the main race. He will jump from draw 15 and will be ridden by Grant van Niekerk. The 129th edition of the R5 million Grade 1 race over 2 200m at Hollywoodbets Greyville will go off at 16:00.
