Van Coke, Kitshoff and Dobbo walk into a bar

It's not every day that a sleepy Klein Karoo town hosts a gathering of musicians, World Cup-winning Springboks, magicians and broadcasters, but that's exactly what's on the cards as the third annual 5 Arts Weekend returns to the Karoo Art Hotel in Barrydale from 18-20 July 2025. This festival is loosely geared around the theme 'The Art of...', with a host of talented South Africans hitting the road to Barrydale in aid of a good cause. The weekend kicks off on Friday night with an intimate concert in the hotel's gallery theater by Francois van Coke for 'The Art of Music'. Rugby takes center stage on Saturday with 'The Art of Rugby – Insight & Analysis', a more informal 'fireside chat' on professional rugby preparation with John Dobson, head coach of the DHL Stormers, and Steven Kitshoff, Springbok stalwart and scrummaging master. Leading the conversation will be CapeTalk host John Maytham. On Saturday evening, guests will also gather to watch the Springboks take on Georgia, with commentary, banter and braai flavor in full supply. Other highlights include 'The Art of Magic', with comedic illusionist Peter G, and 'The Art of Beer', hosted by Kitshoff; co-founder of Bomb Squad beer. Expect tastings, tales, and a celebration of South Africa's craft beer culture. But the weekend is about more than entertainment. It's become an important community upliftment initiative, supporting local rugby clubs The Stryders and Flying Eagles, who celebrate their 75th anniversary this year. With over 60 percent unemployment in the area, sport is a powerful force for good, and thanks to proceeds from past events, the teams now have new kit, improved facilities, and a growing youth program. This year's goal: new boots and more equipment. Along with Dobson and Co. contributing their time and talent, the weekend is made possible by Rick and Sue Melville, owners of the Karoo Art Hotel, whose deep local ties and commitment to Barrydale help drive the weekend's fundraising efforts.

New captain for Springboks as Kolisi withdraws

It's been confirmed that coach Rassie Erasmus was forced to make a late change to his Springbok team on Friday, following the withdrawal of Siya Kolisi. Thankfully, it has been described as just a 'niggle', and it's hoped that this won't affect Kolisi's availability for the Test season that gets under way in July. Jesse Kriel will now lead the Springboks on Saturday, while Marco van Staden has been drafted straight into the starting lineup as a replacement for Kolisi and will partner up with Vincent Tshituka and Jean-Luc du Preez in the loose trio, with the rest of the squad remaining unchanged. This will be the first time Kriel will lead the Springboks. He made his debut for South Africa in 2015 has played in 79 Tests. The match kicks off at 17:10 and will be broadcast live on SuperSport. 15 Aphelele Fassi (Hollywoodbets Sharks) – 11 caps, 35 points (7t) 14 Cheslin Kolbe (Tokyo Sungoliath) – 40 caps, 111 points (18t, 3c, 5p) 13 Jesse Kriel (captain, Canon Eagles) – 79 caps, 90 points (18t) 12 Damian de Allende (Wild Knights) – 87 caps, 55 points (11t) 11 Kurt-Lee Arendse (Vodacom Bulls) – 24 caps, 90 points (18t) 10 Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu (DHL Stormers) – 8 caps, 52 points (14c, 48p) 9 Morne van den Berg (Emirates Lions) – 2 caps, 0 points 8 Jean-Luc du Preez (Sale Sharks) – 14 caps 10 points (2t) 7 Vincent Tshituka (Hollywoodbets Sharks) – uncapped 6 Marco van Staden (Vodacom Bulls) – 25 caps, 10 points (2t) 5 Lood de Jager (Wild Knights) – 66 caps, 25 points (5t) 4 Jean Kleyn (Munster) – 7 caps, 0 points 3 Asenathi Ntlabakanye (Emirates Lions) – uncapped 2 Malcolm Marx (Kubota Spears) – 76 caps, 105 points (21t) 1 Ox Nche (Hollywoodbets Sharks) – 39 caps, 0 points Replacements: 16 Marnus van der Merwe (Scarlets) – uncapped 17 Jan-Hendrik Wessels (Vodacom Bulls) – 3 caps, 5 points (1t) 18 Neethling Fouche (DHL Stormers) – uncapped 19 Franco Mostert (Honda Heat) – 78 caps, 20 points (4t) 20 Kwagga Smith (Shizuoka Blue Revs) – 51 caps, 45 points (9t) 21 Cobus Reinach (Montpellier) – 39 caps, 70 pts (14t) 22 Manie Libbok (DHL Stormers) – 19 caps, 98 pts (1t, 30c, 11p) 23 Andre Esterhuizen (Hollywoodbets Sharks) – 19 caps, 0 points Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Life without magical Manie Libbok at No 10 could be tougher for Stormers than what they are prepared for

Manie Libbok will be missed by the Stormers when he departs for Japan soon. Photo: PHANDO JIKELO Independent Media Image: PHANDO JIKELO Independent Media Comment by Leighton Koopman Whenever Manie Libbok pulls on a Stormers jersey, magic is bound to happen on the rugby field. However, his departure from the Stormers – confirmed in a video by the Cape side – to Japan is not just the end of a brilliant chapter of his rugby career in the Mother City. But it could also end up in a flyhalf crisis for the team in the United Rugby Championship and Champions Cup. For a franchise that rebuilt itself around flair, unpredictability and a free-flowing attacking game-plan when they nearly went bankrupt, losing the conductor of that orchestra is more than just a setback; it is a massive blow to their ambitions of winning titles in the future. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Let's be blunt: the Stormers' attacking identity doesn't function without a flyhalf who can pull the strings and improvise on the attack. Libbok isn't just any No 10, though. He has been at the forefront of their resurgence since joining from the Bulls and Sharks, two franchises that failed to unlock the full potential of his talent. At the Stormers, he flourished, and there is a simple reason for that: the Cape side embraced his strengths and built their model around how he plays, not the other way around. Now, with Libbok exiting, the system may collapse. Manie Libbok expected to be announced by Kintetsu Liners pretty soon. #rugbyjp #SaffasAbroad — Darren (@SaffasRugby) June 24, 2025 Libbok's ability is rare and when harnessed properly, he is a title-winning flyhalf on any given day. He steps off his right and left foot, and his passing game is sublime – whether to the left or right of the field, he has world-class vision on the attack even in pressure situations. He doesn't just run plays – he reads the game in real time, and almost bends it to his will when on song. Replacing that will be difficult, and it was evident when he was injured last season. Newbie Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu is promising, and no doubt the future of the Stormers. However, he's raw, and it was clear in the Cape side's flat performance in the URC quarter-finals against the Glasgow Warriors recently. End of an era in Cape Town. 💔 The Stormers confirm nine player exits, including URC-winning pivot Manie Libbok! Reports link him to Japan's Liners. Best of luck, Manie!#Stormers #AllThingsRugby — All Things Rugby (@AllThingsRugbyX) June 23, 2025 He failed to spark his side, and only when Libbok entered the fray as the flyhalf did the team look better. If Feinberg-Mngomezulu is the heir apparent, he will need time. But time is a luxury that the Stormers don't necessarily have in the extremely competitive European rugby competitions. Worst of all, Feinberg-Mngomezulu is injury-prone, and should he go down again for an extended period, they will be in real trouble with Libbok away. Other options in the squad, like Jurie Matthee, lack Libbok's instinctive flair and resilience, especially under pressure. Remember the 2022 URC campaign? Libbok didn't just step up, he owned the biggest stage, and that took his career to another level. Not many players can do that. Stormers director of rugby John Dobson built the team model on movement, unpredictability and creative offloads – hot-potato rugby, as some call it. Without a dynamic pivot to link the backs and forwards and dictate their transition from defence to attack, the model will feel it. Losing that impetus could see the team take a more structured and conservative approach with other flyhalves, except maybe Feinberg-Mngomezulu. That is not what supporters would want to see. They want the flair, the fast-paced action and the fun that sets the team apart from other sides.

Image: BackpagePix Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus on Tuesday named four uncapped players in a quality team to face the Barbarians. Asenathi Ntlabakanye (prop) and Vincent Tshituka (flanker) have both been named in a relatively experienced starting lineup, while Marnus van der Merwe (hooker) and Neethling Fouche (prop) will feature alongside a few Rugby World Cup-winners and seasoned campaigners on the replacements bench. Another notable inclusion in the starting team was Lood de Jager, who will partner up with Jean Kleyn in the engine room. The experienced lock is back for his first Test since the Springboks' 2023 Rugby Championship clash against the All Blacks in New Zealand, which was his only Test in the last two seasons following a string of injuries.
