Freely Streaming Service Signs Up Two More Major TV Brands

Forbes08-05-2025
Freely, the service that allows U.K. viewers to watch live broadcast channels over the Internet rather than through an aerial, has announced that it's expanding its availability to two major new TV brands.
Thanks to deals with Barcelona-based operating system Titan OS and TV manufacturer TP Vision, Freely will be available in the U.K. as a content option on select 2025 TVs from both Philips and JVC. The first Philips TVs to support it are set to launch before the end of this month (May 2025), and while a list of specific model numbers hasn't yet been released, it has been confirmed that the Philips Freely models will also carry the brand's exclusive Ambilight technology. This delivers a less tiring and more immersive viewing experience by using rear-mounted LEDs to cast immersive coloured light pools onto the wall around the screen – light pools that can even be set to track the tone and position of the colour content of the film or TV show you're watching.

Freely hasn't shared a list of the precise JVC models that will be covered by the new Freely deal either, but basically it should be any JVC set carrying the Titan OS that's launched from this summer at electronics retailer Currys.
According to Freely, the new Philips and JVC deals, which join previous deals with Amazon Fire TVs, Bush, Hisense, METZ, Panasonic, Sharp, TCL, TiVo, Toshiba and the VIDAA smart platform, mean that its service will be available on almost half of the UK TV market.
'We're excited to bring Freely to the JVC TV range, giving customers even more flexibility to enjoy the content they love,' says Senior Buyer for Currys, Paul Slater. 'By adding this free-to-use platform to our affordable JVC range, which is available exclusively at Currys, we're continuing our mission to help everyone enjoy amazing technology.'
Alongside the announcement of its two new TV brand partners, Freely has also revealed that its service, which is backed by the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 and claims to carry 97% of the U.K.'s 'favourite TV Shows' on both a live and on-demand basis, will be rolling out a duo of new content-finding features over the coming weeks.
A new Backwards TV Guide is designed to make it easier for viewers to watch shows that have recently aired by allowing them to simply scroll back to earlier in the day on the Freely electronic programme guide. Once you've got to the programme you missed, you can either start streaming it right away, or else add it to the previously announced My List feature.
New deals mean that Freely will soon be available on select Philips and JVC TVs that use the Titan ... More OS smart platform.
My List makes it possible for the first time to save up to 50 favourite TV shows from any of the U.K.'s biggest free-to-air broadcasters all in one easy access place, rather than you having to re-search for favourite shows every time you want to watch them.
The second of the new features coming to Freely, Never Miss, highlights on the Freely home page the most talked about coming up, on now and just missed TV shows, as well as spotlighting the most popular and high profile shows available via Freely's huge on-demand content library.
Both of these new features are set to be rolled out in an upcoming Freely Next firmware update that will arrive automatically onto any Freely-capable TV that's connected to Wi-Fi.
'Our new features—Backwards TV Guide, Never Miss, and My List—make finding, saving, and jumping back into great content effortless, whether live or on demand,' says Co-Chief Product Officer at Freely, Sarah Milton. 'Freely keeps evolving, offering premium features for free that other streaming platforms don't have. And now with Freely becoming available on a wider range of new smart TVs, even more households will be able to enjoy this enhanced free streaming experience.'

Ex-Janus Henderson analyst jailed in UK for six years for insider dealing

LONDON (Reuters) -A former Janus Henderson analyst was sentenced to six years in prison on Friday for using confidential information on companies, including Daimler, Jet2 and THG to make nearly 1 million pounds ($1.4 million) following a London court trial. Redinel Korfuzi, 38, used information he accessed through his job as a research analyst at the asset manager to place bets alongside his sister Oerta Korfuzi, 36. The siblings pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit insider dealing and money laundering between January 2019 and March 2021, but were convicted last month after a trial at Southwark Crown Court. Judge Alexander Milne sentenced Redinel Korfuzi to six years in jail and Oerta Korfuzi, who had an investment and finance qualification, to five years, saying the pair were "intelligent and financially aware individuals" whose actions were a "betrayal of trust". Janus Henderson, which manages roughly $380 billion in assets, was not involved in the criminal case or accused of any wrongdoing. A spokesperson said when the Korfuzis were convicted: "The protection of confidential information is extremely important to Janus Henderson and the firm treats any actual or suspected misuse of confidential information with the utmost seriousness." Prosecutor Tom Forster told jurors at the start of the trial in February that Redinel and Oerta Korfuzi used lockdown restrictions imposed from March 2020 to carry out the conspiracy from the London flat they shared. Forster added that the defendants made a profit of around 963,000 pounds in relation to 11 companies' shares in just over six months. The Financial Conduct Authority previously said Janus Henderson had cooperated fully with its investigation. Sign in to access your portfolio

Currys PLC (DSITF) (FY 2025) Earnings Call Highlights: Strong Profit Growth Amid Market Challenges

Release Date: July 03, 2025 For the complete transcript of the earnings call, please refer to the full earnings call transcript. Currys PLC (DSITF) reported a significant increase in adjusted profit before tax, up 37% year on year to GBP 162 million. The company achieved strong free cash flow of GBP 149 million, an 82% increase, contributing to a healthier balance sheet with net cash of GBP 184 million. Currys PLC (DSITF) saw a 4% like-for-like sales growth in the UK, with recurring services revenue also increasing significantly. The Nordics region showed strong profit and cash performance, with adjusted EBIT up 24% on a constant currency basis. The company has successfully implemented a clear strategy, leading to improved market share and strong performance across all financial metrics, including sales, margins, and cash flow. Despite improvements, the Nordics region experienced flat like-for-like sales, indicating challenges in market conditions. Operating expenses increased at a faster rate than sales, with inflation and living wage impacts contributing to a 20 basis point adverse movement in the operating expense to sales ratio. The company faces significant headwinds, including GBP 32 million in new government-related costs and general inflation, which will require diligent management to maintain performance. Currys PLC (DSITF) is still working to improve customer satisfaction scores, with a current NPS of 55% in the UK, which the company acknowledges is not yet satisfactory. The company is dissatisfied with the current progress in leveraging customer data for personalized experiences and third-party monetization, indicating room for improvement in this area. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 10 Warning Signs with DSITF. Q: What gives Currys the confidence to enter new categories and gain market share profitably? A: Currys is focusing on adjacent categories that leverage their existing infrastructure, supplier relationships, and channels. They are not making large leaps but are expanding into areas where they already have a significant presence, ensuring they can grow profitably. (Unidentified_3) Q: What is the target for ID Mobile customers, and is there a ceiling on growth? A: Currys is targeting at least 2.5 million ID Mobile customers this year, with no ceiling on growth. They are investing in free cash flow and working capital to grow the customer base, demonstrating they are a good owner for this asset. (Unidentified_3) Q: How does Currys plan to offset the working capital investment from ID Mobile? A: Currys focuses on stock management, supplier payment terms, and debt management to offset the working capital investment from ID Mobile. They have been successful in achieving this over the past couple of years. (Unidentified_11) Q: What is the outlook for costs in the Nordics, and what macro environment is needed to reach the 3% target? A: The Nordics business is already efficient, but further cost efficiencies may be harder to find. Improvements in consumer confidence in Denmark and potential interest rate reductions in Norway could help, but the macro environment remains challenging. (Unidentified_11) Q: Why is Currys finding success in the mobile market while others struggle? A: Currys has integrated mobile as a core category, worked on strong commercial terms with network partners, and focused on growth in both channels. They have a strong proposition and are benefiting from the exit of smaller players. Tesla sales down 13.5% in Q2

Tesla sold 384,122 cars in the second quarter, down nearly 60,000 cars, or 13.5% from the sales total a year ago. This marks the largest year-over-year drop in sales in Tesla's history, although it is up 14.1% from its first quarter total. Industry registration data indicates that both US and European sales have fallen sharply, despite an overall increase in electric vehicle (EV) sales in both markets. Tesla also faces increased competition, not only from legacy Western automakers but also from Chinese manufacturers. This competition has significantly impacted Tesla's sales in China, the largest market for both EVs and auto sales, and Tesla's second-largest market. Tesla is poised to lose its title as the world's largest EV maker based on annual sales to Chinese automaker BYD, even though BYD does not sell cars in the US market. BYD has reported it has sold one million EVs in the first half of this year, exceeding Tesla's year-to-date total of around 721,000 units. Analysts point out that while Tesla has recently given its popular Model Y an update, it lacks a more affordable product offering – which has created an opportunity for rivals such as BYD, especially in China. BYD also sold more fully electric cars in Europe than Tesla for the first time ever in April. There are also suggestions that high-profile political activity in the US from CEO Elon Musk has also kept potential Tesla buyers away. "Tesla sales down 13.5% in Q2" was originally created and published by Just Auto, a GlobalData owned brand.
