Jays squander 8-run lead, recover to tie Yanks for first in East
Davis Schneider homered twice and Addison Barger also went deep as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the visiting New York Yankees 11-9 on Wednesday night.
Toronto has won the first three games of the four-game series to tie the Yankees for first in the American League East.
The Blue Jays squandered an 8-0 lead, with New York's Aaron Judge's two-run homer in the eighth tying the game at 9.
Toronto came back to take an 11-9 lead against Devin Williams (2-3) in the home eighth on two walks, a run-scoring wild pitch and Barger's RBI single.
Barger finished with four RBIs while Schneider drove in three runs. Andres Gimenez contributed three hits for the Blue Jays.
New York's Giancarlo Stanton hit a three-run homer, while Judge finished with three hits and three RBIs.
Toronto's Yimi Garcia (1-2) returned from the injured list to pitch the eighth, walking Rice with one out and serving up Judge's game-tying homer.
In the bottom of the eighth, Williams issued a one-out walk to George Springer, who stole second. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was intentionally walked. The runners advanced on a flyout, and Springer scored on a wild pitch. Barger followed with an RBI single to left.
Jeff Hoffman pitched around a single in the ninth to earn his 20th save.
Toronto scored seven in the first inning against Will Warren.
Gimenez led off with his first of two singles in the inning. George Springer singled and Guerrero walked before Alejandro Kirk hacked a high sweeper to right for a two-run single. Barger homered to center on a first-pitch changeup.
With one out, Will Wagner walked and Schneider homered to center for a 7-0 lead.
Toronto added to the margin in the third when Wagner hit a broken-bat double to left and scored on Gimenez's two-out infield single that Warren deflected.
Warren completed four innings, allowing eight runs, 10 hits and four walks while striking out four.
The Yankees scored six in the fifth. Jasson Dominguez, Anthony Volpe, DJ LeMahieu and Ben Rice hit consecutive singles to produce two runs. Judge added an RBI double high off the wall in center.
Stanton hit a slurve to center for his first homer of the season to cut the deficit to 8-6. Brendon Little then replaced Toronto starter Jose Berrios, who allowed six runs, nine hits and no walks while fanning three in 4 1/3 innings.
New York scored one in the sixth on Cody Bellinger's fielder's-choice grounder.
Schneider homered to right-center on Tim Hill's first-pitch sinker with two outs in the seventh.

NEW YORK (AP) — Kayla Thornton, Gabby Williams, Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron will be making their All-Star debuts in Indianapolis later this month as they were all chosen on Sunday as reserves for the game. It's the first time that three rookies will be playing in the game since 2011. Other reserves chosen include Seattle's Skylar Diggins, Phoenix's Alyssa Thomas, Atlanta's Rhyne Howard, Indiana's Kelsey Mitchell, Los Angeles' Kelsey Plum, Minnesota' Courtney Williams, Las Vegas' Jackie Young and Chicago's Angel Reese. 'It means a lot to go with these other two,' said Diggins, who will be making her seventh All-Star appearance, of playing with teammates Nneka Ogwumike and Williams. The reserves were selected by the WNBA's 13 head coaches, who each voted for three guards, five frontcourt players and four players at either position regardless of conference. The coaches were not able to vote for their own players. Captains Caitlin Clark and Napheesa Collier will draft their teams for the All-Star Game on July 19. Orioles acquire Alex Jackson from Yankees after Gary Sánchez becomes their 4th catcher on IL
ATLANTA (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles acquired Alex Jackson from the New York Yankees on Sunday after Gary Sánchez became their fourth catcher on the injured list. Sánchez left Saturday night's game against Atlanta with right knee pain and an MRI revealed a sprain. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said he did not have a timetable for Sánchez's recovery. Baltimore, which has 14 players on the IL, sent the Yankees international signing bonus pool allocation and a player to be named or cash. Two-time All-Star Adley Rutschman has not played since June 19 because of a left oblique strain, Maverick Handley has been on the concussion IL since a collision at the plate with the Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Jr. on June 22 and Chadwick Tromp hasn't played since June 30 because of a lower back strain. Jays aim to sweep Angels, complete perfect homestand

The Blue Jays won the first two games of their series against the Angels by the same 4-3 score, and each time in extra innings -- 10 innings on Friday and 11 on Saturday. The Blue Jays opened the homestand with a four-game sweep of the New York Yankees that vaulted them into first place in the American League East. They have won seven straight overall and have opened a three-game lead in the division. A big reason for the surge has been George Springer, who was 2-for-6 with a two-run homer on Saturday. He has five homers in his past five games, the first time he has done so since 2017. He is batting .490 (24-for-49) with six homers and 21 RBIs over his past 13 games. 'He has been so big for us the past couple of weeks,' Toronto manager John Schneider said. 'He's still showing the league that he can do this.' The Blue Jays eked out the win Saturday despite stranding 16 runners. They were 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position with Addison Barger having two of the hits, including an RBI single in the first and the game-winning RBI single with two out in the 11th. While the hitters were stranding runners, Blue Jays right-hander Lazaro Estrada made his major league debut and pitched four innings to save an overworked bullpen. He allowed one run and two hits while striking out four. 'Our depth is really good,' Schneider said. 'It's a really fulfilling feeling for me, for the staff and, I'm sure, for the guys.' The Blue Jays are scheduled to start right-hander Kevin Gausman (6-6, 4.18 ERA) on Sunday. He is 6-3 with a 3.65 ERA in 11 career starts against the Angels. He won both his starts against the team last season, posting a 0.64 ERA (one run over 14 innings). The Angels hope to avoid a sweep with left-hander Tyler Anderson (2-5, 4.12) scheduled to start. Anderson is 0-3 with a 4.98 ERA in six career starts against the Blue Jays, including a no-decision on May 6 of this season after giving up two runs over 6 2/3 innings. The Angels continue to have problems cashing runners. After going 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranding eight on Friday, they were 2-for-12 and left 10 on base on Saturday. In three extra innings in the series, they have not scored the runner placed at second. And twice they loaded the bases in the first three innings Saturday and came away with only a run each time. 'It is becoming a bit of a familiar thing,' interim manager Ray Montgomery said. 'We're putting guys on base, and we're giving ourselves so many chances. We are just not coming up with the big hit when we need it. To load the bases twice like that, and come away with two is kind of a little disappointing.' Angels center fielder Jo Adell got the run home each time with a bases-loaded walk in the first and a sacrifice fly in the third. He went 0-for-3, however, to end his 15-game hit streak. Angels second baseman Chad Stevens singled against Max Scherzer in the fourth inning for his first major league hit -- but was then caught stealing.
