No place for IPL champs RCB in World Club Championship; Pakistan's Lahore Qalandars unlikely too; here's why
According to PTI, there will be no representation from IPL despite the backing of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). RCB are the reigning champions of IPL - their first trophy in 18 years. However, it reports are to be believed, Pakistan will have no representation in the inaugural World Club Championship.
The decision to not have any Pakistan representation came after its cricket board's no show in a meeting held in London recently. Lahore Qalandars are the current champions of Pakistan Super League.
The World Club Championship is being fast tracked with the blessings of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and its chairman Jay Shah. The CEOs of most of the leading T20 franchise-based leagues gathered for the meeting held on the initiative of the English and Wales Cricket Board (WCB) with the ICC's backing.
'The Pakistan Cricket Board was invited to send its CEO of the PSL for a meeting held on the sidelines of the cricket connect meeting in London last month but no one showed up,' a source was quoted as saying.
'Discussions were held on the proposed World Clubs Championship, its window, format, schedule etc. (The) CEOs of the Emirates League, Big Bash League, The Hundred, SA20, MLC, Caribbean Premier League etc attended the meeting. Pakistan was also invited,' he confirmed.
The report also added that the World Club Championship is being fast tracked in an attempt to derail Saudi Cricket League. It said private investors will be putting in an initial investment of $400 million in the Saudi league but are facing resistance as they want to have their league on the sidelines of the Tennis Grand Slam events every year.
The source said the recent meeting was also important as CEOs had discussed fixed windows for their events, availability of NOCs for overseas players etc. 'The PCB didn't show up and strangely Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has also not regularly attended ICC meetings," he added.

Italy On Verge Of Qualifying For T20 World Cup 2026 After Shocking Win Over Scotland
Last Updated: Italy will qualify for the T20 World Cup 2026 if they manage to get the better of the Netherlands in their last league match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier. The Italy men's cricket team is on the cusp of creating history. The European team stunned Scotland by 12 runs on Wednesday (July 9) at The Hague to take a giant step towards qualifying for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. The 2026 edition of the men's T20 World Cup will be played in India and Sri Lanka early next year. With a total of five points after three matches played so far in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier 2025, Italy top the points table. If the Joe Burns-led side manage to get the better of the Netherlands in their last league match on Friday (July 11) at Sportpark Westvliet in The Hague, then they will qualify for the T20 World Cup for the first time ever. And even if Italy lose the match against the Netherlands team, then also they will still have a chance to progress. For that, they just have to make sure that they finish above Scotland and Jersey in the points table. As of now, Jersey and Scotland have 3 points each to their credit, and they will face each other on Friday. The winner of that game will have a chance to match Italy's tally of 5 points. But still, Italy can finish above them due to a better net run rate and seal the deal. According to Italy captain Burns, it feels 'very surreal" after his side took a major step towards qualifying for their first T20 World Cup. 35-year-old Burns, who played 23 Tests for Australia from 2014 to 2020 before pledging his allegiance to Italy last year, as per BBC Sport, said that his side 'technically cannot celebrate too hard at the moment" after the win in the Hague and acknowledged 'there's still a big game on Friday." 'I am really proud of the boys for this moment. To come and beat Scotland, who are a fantastic team, is a nice reward for sacrifices our players, staff, and federation have made," said Burns. 'Hopefully this is the stepping stone for a lot to come. It's a very emotional group at the moment. Being on the verge of a World Cup? It's very surreal." In the 2024 edition of the T20 World Cup, USA, Canada, Uganda, Papua New Guinea, and Nepal made their debut, and USA even went on to stun the heavyweights Pakistan at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas. view comments First Published: July 09, 2025, 21:24 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Agriculture exports can rise from Rs 4.5 lakh crore to Rs 20 lakh crore with focus on processing, branding: Piyush Goyal
New Delhi [India], July 9 (ANI): Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, while addressing the ICC: Krishi Vikram Thematic Session in New Delhi on Wednesday and said that India's agriculture and fisheries exports have now reached Rs 4.5 lakh crore. He added that agricultural exports have the potential to grow to Rs 20 lakh crore, provided the country strengthens food processing and improves the quality of branding and packaging. According to a release from the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Goyal shared that India's agricultural export basket is expanding with new items such as litchi, pineapple, bottle gourd, and jamun--products which were not traditionally exported--now reaching international markets. He mentioned that jamun was recently exported to the UK, and litchis from Punjab were exported to Doha and Dubai. He added that India's footprint in global markets such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and other Gulf nations is steadily growing. He also highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's global push for millets through the International Year of Millets, which has brought global attention to India's traditional grains and their nutritional value. Goyal underlined the need to build a resilient supply chain across agriculture, from seeds to fertilisers, insecticides, pesticides, and equipment such as water pumps. He said that India must be prepared for any global disruption in agricultural imports and ensure self-reliance across all aspects of farm inputs. The Minister emphasised that drip irrigation can be a game changer for India's agriculture, particularly in a rain-fed economy. He said that water conservation methods like drip irrigation must be scaled up into a mass movement. By creating small water bodies at the village level and adopting drip irrigation widely, Indian agriculture can become more predictable and less vulnerable to climate variability. These steps will not only enhance productivity but also facilitate exports by improving crop reliability and consistency. He highlighted the benefits of replacing outdated water pumps with smaller, energy-efficient models. These smart pumps can be controlled remotely via mobile phones, provide data on water usage, and help farmers regulate irrigation. When integrated with drip systems, they can significantly reduce water wastage and damage caused by over-irrigation. He said energy-efficient pumps combined with drip irrigation could also bring down input costs and improve the overall sustainability of farming practices. By reducing electricity usage and optimising water consumption, these technologies directly benefit farmers and enhance long-term productivity. The Minister encouraged agriculture entrepreneurs to collaborate with farmers to realise this potential. He highlighted the recent creation of the Turmeric Board as a step towards boosting spice exports. He also noted that coffee exports have doubled in recent years, and while spice exports are growing, more focused efforts are needed to scale further. He highlighted that natural and organic farming have immense potential. The government is tightening certification norms for organic produce with the help of blockchain technology to ensure trust and traceability. He added that the government will also support better packaging and product design, so that India's agricultural goods gain more visibility and competitiveness in the international market. Goyal noted that when farmers, industries, and exporters work together, challenges are resolved more efficiently. He said government assistance would be available for packaging and design support to scale up exports. The Minister said that the transformation of Indian agriculture has been both difficult and inspirational. He highlighted how the strength of India's soil, the tireless efforts of farmers, and continued government support have made India increasingly Atmanirbhar in agriculture. He recalled that agriculture has always been a national priority--from Lal Bahadur Shastri's slogan 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan' to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. He reiterated that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi government remains committed to increasing farmers' income and productivity. He said that under the PM-Kisan Yojana, every farmer receives funds annually. The government has also prevented a rise in fertiliser costs by significantly expanding subsidies. He informed that 1,400 mandis have been strengthened and connected to the e-NAM platform to facilitate transparent price discovery. Farmers are being supported through Farmer Producer Organisations for access to mechanisation, and a Rs 1 lakh crore Agriculture Infrastructure Fund is helping develop agri-infrastructure. Goyal also spoke about the Drone Didi initiative, under which 1.5 lakh women have been trained to use drones for fertiliser spraying. He said the government is promoting intercropping, horticulture, and floriculture and encouraged agri-entrepreneurs to learn international best practices and bring those innovations to Indian farms. He concluded that with collective effort and innovative approaches, Indian agriculture can transform local produce into global success stories and emerge as a true engine of national growth. (ANI)
