Ericsson touts development as data usage skyrockets

Ericsson predicts Thailand's consumption of data usage will soar from 35 gigabytes per month per subscription this year to 67GB by 2030, driven by streaming on the 5G network and a wave of innovations, especially generative artificial intelligence (AI) apps.
To fully realise the potential of 5G, Ericsson urges operators to continue to deploy a 5G standalone (SA) network and build mid-band sites, said Anders Rian, head of Ericsson Thailand.
Thailand is the leader in Southeast Asia for 5G penetration, comprising 25% of total mobile subscriptions last year thanks to its position as a 5G first mover in the region as well as the continuous growth of mobile broadband usage, noted the company.
5G subscriptions in Southeast Asia and Oceania are expected to reach 630 million by 2030, contributing around 49% of total mobile subscriptions in the region by then.
Data traffic per smartphone is expected to grow from 19 GB/month in 2024 to 38 GB/month by 2030.
In Thailand, 5G has become a significant driver of data consumption and increased average revenue per user.
"We are at an inflection point, where 5G and the ecosystem are set to unleash a wave of innovation. The recent advancements in 5G SA networks, coupled with the progress in 5G-enabled devices, have led to an ecosystem poised to unlock transformative opportunities for connected creativity," Mr Rian said.
He said the spectrum auction on June 29 was a positive move, ensuring the two major operators, Advanced Info Service and True Corporation, could further utilise those spectrum bands they landed at the auction.
In the auction, AIS grabbed the 2100MHz, while True clinched the 2300MHz and the 1500MHz bands.
AIS and True each has operated the 2100MHz and 2300MHz bands, respectively, through the partnerships with state enterprise National Telecom. The partnership expires in August this year.
True is expected to utilise the 1500MHz band as a supplementary signal downlink to boost its network capability.
Mr Rian said Ericsson Thailand believes the plan of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission to allocate 3500MHz is a must as it could efficiently optimise the 5G service.
The 3500 MHz range is a key middle-band and the priority range for 5G adoption by mobile operators.
Many countries in Europe provide 5G commercial service on the 3500MHz range.
He added that the 3500MHz band would foster Thailand's competitiveness in the region, boosting network capability and performance as well as creating value by monetising fixed wireless access service for consumers and enterprises.
"To fully realise the potential of 5G, it is essential to continue deploying 5G SA and to further build out mid-band sites," he added.
He said as GenAI devices proliferate and AI apps become increasingly complex, both application service providers and communication service providers will need to focus more on uplink capabilities and latency.
According to the Ericsson Mobility Report released in June, global 5G subscriptions are expected to reach 6.3 billion by the end of 2030 and 5G networks are forecast to handle 80% of global mobile traffic by the end of 2030.

Strategic spectrum allocation with reasonable pricing, the fostering of innovation, and the promotion of telecom competition are crucial for Thailand to become a prominent "digital nation" in Southeast Asia, according to the GSM Association (GSMA). The association said the country should also build a strong national 5G brand and prioritise digital inclusion. The GSMA is a global organisation representing mobile operators and organisations across the mobile ecosystem and adjacent industries. Thailand has become a "quiet achiever" in 5G, Julian Gorman, GSMA's head of Asia-Pacific, told the Bangkok Post, noting the country's leadership in the region alongside Singapore, which are deemed to be the two most experienced 5G nations within the region's footprint. Mr Gorman said that to sustain and enhance its leadership position, Thailand should focus on optimising spectrum management and make the 3.5-GHz spectrum available to foster significant innovation. Moreover, it should set a reasonable spectrum pricing, treating it as if a government were investing in a digital nation, rather than focusing on selling spectrum assets at the highest price. High spectrum prices are not conducive to the collaborative building of a strong digital nation, he added. Lessons from Vietnam and India show that significantly reducing spectrum prices, along with offering incentives such as rebates for the network rollout exceeding the obligations, can accelerate 5G deployment and adoption. Vietnam launched 5G last October and its government announced over the past two months that it would rebate 15% of network rollout costs for those who can go beyond licence obligations in terms of network rollout, said Mr Gorman. This is an incentive for operators to move beyond their minimum commitments to creating a national 5G network to power the economy. In addition, policymakers need to ensure sufficient spectrum allocation. The GSMA recommends 80-100 MHz per operator for the mid-band spectrums. The government should ensure this amount is available to avoid scarcity and drive competition and connectivity. Meanwhile, a clear roadmap for future spectrum availability is essential to cater to increasing data demands. While the manufacturing sector globally accounts for approximately 40% of the 5G benefits, significant opportunities are also being explored in Thailand's tourism and services sectors. The broader Asia-Pacific mobile economy, excluding China, is projected to be worth about US$1 trillion by the end of this decade, with 5G alone contributing an estimated $130 billion of that value. In an unfavourable economy, costs are a major hurdle for 5G adoption. "Innovation can adjust the perception of cost, making smartphones and digital services more appealing by increasing their value proposition," Mr Gorman said. The government can act as an "anchor tenant" by digitising its services, making it cheaper and easier for citizens, especially those at the bottom of the pyramid, to engage via smartphones, thereby increasing the value of the phones. While 5G adoption is important, it's equally critical to close the usage gap by ensuring everyone is connected and encouraging users of older technologies to migrate to newer ones. STRONG 5G NATIONAL BRAND Despite being a "quiet achiever" in 5G, Thailand needs to be "a bit louder" about its vision and achievements to attract more foreign direct investment, innovation and startups, Mr Gorman said. A strong 5G national brand, akin to how Thailand promoted its tourism globally, could significantly elevate its international recognition, he added. Moreover, the country has a big role to play in guiding Asean's digital transformation through initiatives such as spectrum harmonisation which ensures common frequencies and timelines, enabling a "rising tide lifts all boats" scenario that benefits the entire region through efficient technology rollout and economies of investment. Mr Gorman said that while Thailand currently operates with two main mobile network players, a number "below the average in the region", the emphasis for continued innovation should be on fostering competition at the front line of services, rather than solely on infrastructure numbers. A robust regulatory framework and policy that encourages innovation and invites investment is critical. This involves reducing the cost and complexity of launching new businesses and potentially offering incentives for specific types of innovation to invigorate the 5G ecosystem. AI FOR ECONOMIC GROWTH Mr Gorman said the widespread availability of AI in people's pockets has democratised its use, enabling everyone to easily "do something with AI". Governments nurturing the AI ecosystem and innovation can unleash a new ecosystem of innovation and use cases. AI plays a crucial role for telecom operators by making customer care "very personal", improving the efficiency of business operations, and making networks smarter. Mr Gorman said that "AI for networks" uses AI to optimise resource allocation and predict and repair faults, making networks faster and more efficient. Conversely, "Networks for AI" ensures networks are smart enough to handle the changing traffic profiles driven by AI use cases, which often involve more data uploads to the cloud. This synergy supports the monetisation of new use cases for operators. Mr Gorman said Thailand is at the leading edge of GSMA's Open Gateway API (application programming interface) program, such as APIs like SIM swap alerts, and particularly the scam signal API that demonstrates a 90% effective rate in identifying potential scam victims in the UK.

New security risks emerge as GenAI traffic surges 890%

A staggering 890% surge in Generative AI (GenAI) traffic was recorded in 2024, driven by the rapid adoption of GenAI tools in enterprise environments. This raises new security challenges for enterprises in Japan and across the Asia-Pacific region. While AI growth offers significant productivity benefits, the unsanctioned usage, emerging threats and lack of governance have rapidly expanded the attack surface for organisations, particularly across the Asia-Pacific and Japan region, according to The 2025 State of GenAI report produced by AI cybersecurity company Palo Alto Networks. On average, organisations are now managing 66 GenAI applications, with 10% classified as high-risk. As Thailand is projected to invest at least 500 billion baht on digital infrastructure to position itself as a regional AI hub, this underscores the urgent need for robust oversight frameworks to ensure GenAI technologies are deployed safely, securely and ethically. "AI adoption offers transformative opportunities across both commercial and government sectors in the region. But as this report highlights, we are also seeing an expanding attack surface, particularly with the use of high-risk GenAI applications in critical infrastructure sectors," said Tom Scully, director and principal architect for Government and Critical Industries, Asia Pacific & Japan, at Palo Alto Networks. Organisations must balance innovation with strong governance, adopting security architectures that account for AI's unique risks. Proactive oversight and adaptive security controls are essential to ensuring that the benefits of AI are fully realised without compromising national security, public trust or operational integrity, he added. The 2025 State of GenAI report is based on traffic analysis from 7,051 global enterprise customers. According to the report, GenAI traffic increased more than 890% in 2024. Following the release of DeepSeek-R1 in January 2025, DeepSeek-related traffic alone spiked by 1,800% within two months. Another key finding is rising data loss incidents. GenAI-related data loss prevention incidents more than doubled, now accounting for 14% of all data security incidents. Shadow AI has emerged as a major risk. Unauthorised, unsanctioned GenAI use, dubbed "Shadow AI", has created blind spots for IT and security teams, making it difficult to control sensitive data flows. The top three apps used in Thailand are Grammarly (36.56%), Microsoft PowerApps (30.99%) and OpenAI ChatGPT (23.41%). Piya Jitnimit, country manager for Thailand at Palo Alto Networks, said Thailand's public and private sectors are increasingly integrating AI to enhance operational efficiency and service innovation. "As adoption accelerates, it is imperative that we proactively address the emerging risks associated with these technologies," he said. Establishing a robust governance framework, ensuring ethical and secure implementation and cultivating a digitally-skilled workforce are critical to advancing Thailand's vision of becoming a regional leader in AI, he added. The report also recommended businesses seek to safely harness the potential of GenAI. They should establish visibility and control to gain comprehensive oversight of GenAI app usage, implementing conditional access policies and managing permission at the user and group levels. It also suggests they safeguard sensitive data by deploying real-time content inspection with centralised policy enforcement to prevent unauthorised data exfiltration.
