Giants' Daboll: Jaxson Dart's camp 'much like all the rookies'
July 27 - The New York Giants have one of the deeper and more intriguing quarterback rooms in the NFL, but coach Brian Daboll is firm in his stance that Russell Wilson is the team's starter. The Giants signed veteran Jameis Winston, selected Jaxson Dart in the first round and also have Tommy DeVito entering his third NFL season. But Wilson has continued to validate why Daboll put any quarterback controversy to rest by naming him the starter last week. "He's done this for a long time. He's had a really good camp since he's been here. And then the other three guys have done a great job too," Daboll said. "I like our quarterback room. They're working hard, they're going out every day. They're doing the things they need to do. It's a good group to be around." Dart was selected with the 25th overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft out of Ole Miss, but is not yet ready to threaten Wilson, the 10-time Pro Bowl selection who signed a one-year, $10.5 million contract in March. Dart is still learning the ropes of the NFL as he goes through his first training camp. "Much like all the rookies, first training camp, some good, some things to improve on, but he's got the right mindset," Daboll said. "He's here real late. He works. It's good to see him kind of finish a drive two days ago, throwing it where he needs to throw it, keep working with him." With three veterans along with Dart, one of the biggest challenges is splitting practice snaps. The Giants need to get Winston prepared as Wilson's likely backup to begin the season, but Daboll also needs to develop Dart. That leads to situations like in Friday's practice where Winston gave way to Dart during a late offensive drive. "I think Kaf (Mike Kafka) and Shane (Bowen) have done a nice job of divvying up the reps the way we need to divvy them up," Daboll said. "Sometimes they don't even know when they're going in or the offensive coaches don't know when I'm switching them either. "That was a situation there at the end where Jameis was taking a rack and I just threw Dart in there. Try to keep the coaches on their toes and the quarterbacks so they can practice numerous situations." Daboll isn't committing to Winston as the primary backup just four days into training camp, but he did note the former No. 1 overall pick's confidence in his arm and fearlessness in pushing the ball downfield. Winston has thrown 111 career interceptions to go with 154 touchdowns, but is known for his ability to shake off mistakes. Daboll called it a "no fear mentality," but also said the coaching staff continues to work on Winston's footwork, timing and overall grasp of the offense. Not all that much different than Dart, who Daboll will continue to be creative with in how he develops during camp. "Whether it's a situation or putting him in after a bad play or giving him a pressure that he might have not seen. You try to give him as much as you can give him so that each day you can learn from it," Daboll said. "If there's a good play that you have, you go ahead and give him positive reinforcement. And when there's a play that maybe wasn't executed the exact right way, you try to get another look at that sometime down the line and keep (tabs) on where they're at. "We do that with all the quarterbacks, but certainly with Jaxson." --Field Level Media

A cagey hour of football followed and penalties were needed, with England stars Hannah Hampton and Chloe Kelly the heroines. Here is how SunSport's Emillia Hawkins rated the performances. Hannah Hampton - 10 READ MORE IN FOOTBALL HAM IT UP Eagle-eyed fans stunned at where England keeper kept her penalty 'cheat sheet' Took inspiration from Mary Earps in the 2023 World Cup final, playing with confidence from the off. There was nothing really she could do about Spain's opening goal given the power behind the ball from Caldentey's header. Hampton stayed composed throughout and was the hero once again in the shootout, saving twice. 12 Lucy Bronze - 8 Initiated an early England attack with a long ball over to Russo in the opening stages, but let Caldentey breeze past her perhaps a bit too easily when Spain broke the deadlock. Made a few errors but also made some important clearances. A good performance overall. Revealed at full-time that she played the entire tournament with a broken tibia. Incredible. 12 Leah Williamson - 8 Captain fantastic. Another solid performance from the centre-back, leading by example. Missed a penalty in the shootout, but it didn't matter. 12 Jess Carter - 9 Started nervously but became one of England's most important players, making some crucial interceptions and challenges. A real testament to her resilience given everything she has dealt with during this tournament. 12 Alex Greenwood - 8 Made some crucial blocks in the box and managed to keep Ona Batlle and Athenea del Castillo at bay for the most part. Keira Walsh - 7 The England midfield faced relentless pressure from the likes of Patri Guijarro, Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas throughout, and Walsh was the player marked most heavily. However, she still managed to put in a good shift in midfield. 12 Georgia Stanway - 7 Another composed performance from the midfielder despite facing intense pressure from the Spanish midfield. She played a part in the England equaliser, sending the ball out wide to Kelly for the assist. Put her body on the line several times until she was eventually forced off in extra-time. Ella Toone - 7 Completed 100 per cent of her passes when she was on the pitch before being subbed off for Beth Mead. Another performance to be proud of. 12 Lauren Hemp - 7 Never stopped running. Even deep in extra-time she was still able to find enough energy to chase down the Spanish defenders. Another good performance from the winger. 12 Alessia Russo - 8 Once again played with fantastic energy, putting all the work in up front just as she has been doing for the entire tournament. Finally rewarded with another goal, heading the ball nicely into the top-left corner. 12 Lauren James - 6 Didn't have much influence on the match going forward but made some important defensive contributions. Unfortunate to be forced off early due to injury. SUBSTITUTES: Chloe Kelly (for James, 40) - 9 Had an instant impact - once again. The winger made her presence known by sending a perfect cross into Russo for the equaliser. She then scored the winning penalty. Mrs. Reliable. 12 Michelle Agyemang (for Russo, 71) - 7 Did more defensive work than attacking due to Spain's press, but played a huge part in the late stages. Deservedly awarded Young Player of the Tournament. What a month for the 19-year-old. Beth Mead (for Toone, 87) - 7 Added some much-needed energy in the late stages. Stepped into the centre of midfield, out of position, and did not look out of place at all. Niamh Charles (for Bronze, 106) - 8 Looked very composed off the bench in defence and made some important challenges under difficult conditions. Scored her penalty to help England to glory. Grace Clinton (for Stanway, 115) - 7 Didn't have too much time to make an impact.

King urges Lionesses to target World Cup glory after ‘great pride' of Euros win
The King has congratulated England on retaining their Women's European Championship crown, saying it is a source of 'great pride' for the country. England beat world champions Spain 3-1 on penalties in the Euro 2025 final in Basel after a 1-1 draw to defend the title they won three years ago. Writing a message entitled 'Congratulations England' on the The Royal Family X account, Charles said: 'This brings you, your manager and all your support team my most heartfelt congratulations on winning the Euros 2025. 'For more years than I care to remember, England fans have sung that famous chant 'football's coming home'. 'As you return home with the trophy you won at Wembley three years ago, it is a source of great pride that, through sporting skill and awesome teamwork, the Lionesses have made those words ring true. For this, you have my whole family's warmest appreciation and admiration. 'More than that, though, you have shown through your example over past weeks that there are no setbacks so tough that defeat cannot be transformed into victory, even as the final whistle looms. 'Well done, Lionesses. The next task is to bring home the World Cup in 2027 if you possibly can!' The Prince of Wales was spotted in the stands applauding and celebrating with those around him – including his daughter Princess Charlotte. William was among those to heap praise on striker Michelle Agyemang, who was named young player of the tournament. As the presentation ceremony took place, William exchanged words with Agyemang, appearing to say, 'Well played, fantastic, well done'. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also offered his congratulations after England's victory in Switzerland. In a post on X, the Prime Minister said: 'Champions! Congratulations @Lionesses – what a team. What a game. What drama. 'You dug deep when it mattered most and you've made the nation proud. History makers.' Lisa Nandy, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, said: 'What an absolutely extraordinary achievement by our Lionesses – once again they have made history and united the country with pride and joy. 'The Lionesses have not just won a tournament – they have inspired millions with their skill, determination and heart. Huge congratulations to Sarina Wiegman, her brilliant squad, and everyone who has supported them on this incredible journey.' Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham paid tribute to the Lionesses' creating English football history and said a victory parade in London on Tuesday would 'give England fans an opportunity to celebrate with the players'. He said: 'Our history-making Lionesses are champions of Europe for the second successive time, and have become the first England Senior team in history to win a tournament overseas. 'We are so proud of all of the players, Sarina and the support team who have all been part of this incredible achievement. 'They have all worked unbelievably hard and we know the nation shares our pride. The victory celebration in London on Tuesday will give England fans an opportunity to celebrate with the players, and be part of history. 'We've had amazing support from our fans both in Switzerland and at home throughout the tournament, and we look forward to celebrating together and creating some lifelong memories.'
