Local band Spider to reveal more intimate side in ‘unplugged' concert
KUALA LUMPUR : Despite a brief lull in popularity at a certain point in their nearly 30-year career, Malaysian pop-rock group Spider – whose music incorporates elements of ska, a genre that originated in Jamaica – continues to attract new fans.
To appreciate those who have supported them throughout this time, the band is set to rock the stage through their 'Spider Unplugged' concert at Mega Star Arena here on Oct 25.
Spider vocalist Rustam Mustafah, aka Tam, said the concert, performed in acoustic format, is a long-held dream that will feature more intimate and dynamic musical arrangements.
'It will be quite challenging for us because unplugged performances are usually done as showcases. But this time we're doing it as a full-scale concert. As such, some songs may be rearranged in joget or inang style, or performed more slowly with drum accompaniment.
'We'll also incorporate strings, brass and percussion by guest musicians to diversify the performance,' Tam teased, stressing that it will be a proper 'full-concert experience' for the audience.
Popular for hits such as 'NazraKu', 'Aladin', 'Relaku Pujuk' and 'Kasih Latifah', Spider comprises Tam and Aie on drums, plus two new members: Iss (bass) and Pown (guitar), replacing Tony and Napie, who passed away in 2021 and 2024 respectively.
Acknowledging that the loss of the two original members had a deep impact on the band's dynamic, Tam expressed confidence in the new members' ability to carry on the legacy. 'I believe in them; they each bring their own unique touch,' he said.
Tam added that this concert will also be a way to attract the younger generation who may have discovered Spider more recently through radio or social media.
'We want to draw in young fans who might know our songs but have never seen us perform live. This is a chance for them to experience our music in its most honest form.'
As for the future, Tam dreams of performing in a concert with an orchestra, and organising tours to rural areas and higher-learning institutions as part of Spider's 30th anniversary next year.
Originating from Johor, the band emerged in the local scene with their debut album 'Ngam Ho' in 1996, which featured their hit single 'Phobia'.
'We want to expand the band's reach to wider audiences. We believe music is more than just entertainment; it holds cultural and educational value as well,' Tam concluded.
Tickets for 'Spider Unplugged', priced between RM198 and RM388, can be purchased here.

Coming to the big screen: 1992's Thomas Cup victory
National shuttlers Cheah Soon Kit and Rashid Sidek will serve as production advisers for the new sports biopic 'Sentuhan Wira'. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Decades after one of the most defining moments in Malaysian sports history took place at Stadium Negara, the national men's badminton team's 1992 Thomas Cup victory is set to hit the big screen. On July 2, producer Victory Pictures officially launched the film, titled 'Sentuhan Wira' ('Touch of a Hero'), in conjunction with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that will see Malaysian badminton legends Rashid Sidek and Cheah Soon Kit appointed as production advisers. The pair, who had been part of the national squad at the time, are also directly involved in the development of the script to ensure factual accuracy and convey the true spirit of the team's journey to victory. Rashid said the film won't simply be about badminton; rather, it will reflect the struggle, belief, and national pride of Malaysians. He described the film's production as an important platform through which the experiences of former players can be shared with the younger generation. It will also highlight the spirit of unity within the squad at the time. 'We want the current generation to feel what we experienced as players and to witness the strong patriotic spirit among us. Even though we came from different races, we still succeeded as one, for one purpose,' he said after the MoU signing witnessed by Finas chairman Hans Isaac. 'Yes, it has been been a long time – we've gone 33 years without winning the Thomas Cup. So, with the release of this film, we hope it will boost the spirit of our current players to become more motivated. 'What's more important is the spirit of patriotism – not individual glory, but the collective drive to bring honour to the nation,' Rashid added. Meanwhile, 'Sentuhan Wira' director Lenny Ooi said he will use an action-film approach in his direction style to emphasise realism in the training and competition scenes. 'Our actors must also be able to play badminton for real, otherwise, their movements will look too rigid,' he noted, adding that filming is expected to start at the end of the year, with a release slated for early 2027.
