Graham Thorpe death: England star's wife reveals tragic details
The dad, 55, was found dead on August 4 after a heartbreaking battle with anxiety and depression for several years.
His wife Amanda today told an inquest how Thorpe had begged her to help him die when his mental health 'spiralled'.
She said: 'The weeks leading up to his death, he told me he doesn't want to be here any more.
'He asked me to help him end his life.
'He said he wants to go to Switzerland. I was in turmoil.'
The Surrey left-hander had previously tried to take his own life in 2022 after losing his coaching job with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
Amanda told the court Thorpe had found Covid lockdown 'very difficult' and 'stressful'.
His dad Geoff agreed with the statement, saying: 'Everything was fine until Covid.'
He said Thorpe was 'not a fella who likes to be cooped up' and also told how his son's life had come 'crashing down' when he lost his job with the ECB.
Geoff continued: 'What you've got to realise is sometimes us chaps are a little bit macho – we can cope.
'In fact, we can't.'
The inquest was told Thorpe was dismissed from his role following an 'incident' surrounding a viral video.
According to reports at the time, the video was filmed after a dismal Ashes series which England lost 4-0.
It showed Tasmanian police breaking up a drinking session involving both England and Australia players.
The leak of the footage caused Thorpe to be dismissed from ECB and he ended up in hospital for eight weeks due to a suicide attempt in 2022.
Assistant coroner Jonathan Stevens said: 'Things continued to go downhill, he was really struggling, had anxiety and insomnia and it was all really dark.'
Thorpe made repeated threats to kill himself and by June 2024, he lost interest in food and 'wanted to hide away, totally isolated, in real crisis and despair', the court heard.
On August 4 that year, he left home and was never seen alive again.
Amanda believed he had gone out to walk the dog but saw the pet at home still so tried to call her husband.
The court heard she then received a call from Thorpe's dad telling her: 'He's gone'.
Amanda added: 'He never really recovered from (his first suicide) attempt.
'He came back from the tour of Australia in a terrible state – lots of things, the video, the environment, the set-up.
'To be sacked after that I think it was foreseeable that it would be really really hard on him.'
Thorpe made his international debut in 1993 and scored a century on his first Ashes appearance, becoming the first England player to do so in 20 years.
He was an England regular and went on to play 100 Tests, scoring 16 centuries and featuring 82 times for the ODI side, as well as enjoying a 17-year career with Surrey.
His final Test appearance came in June 2005 before he was omitted from that summer's victorious Ashes series and called time on his international career.
The inquest continues.

A brothel manager has revealed the 'stupid' mistakes men make that land them in hot water with their wives or girlfriends after getting caught visiting the adult venue. Catherine DeNoire has managed one of the largest brothels in Europe for the last nine years, and during that time she has witnessed many confrontations between husbands and wives who catch their partner using the services provided. Speaking to she said the 'most stupid' ways men have been caught at the brothel is by leaving their phone location on or withdrawing large sums of money from the couple's joint account at the brothel ATM. Ms DeNoire said there were 'bonus points' involved if the man directly transferred from his joint account with his partner to the personal account of the sex worker he was seeing. 'It sounds like a no-brainer, but lots of men stop thinking clearly once they enter a brothel. Common sense just disappears,' she said. 'But to be fair, I always say that there are also clients who are extremely good at covering their tracks. They'll come during their lunch break from work, leave their phone at the office just in case — especially if they have shared location on or tracking history on, which would look suspicious if he would suddenly turned it off — and then just say they had an important client meeting. 'They always bring cash, never withdraw money nearby, keep no receipts or entry tickets and they take a shower after the session so there's no scent or trace.' Ms DeNoire said there have been confrontations that have gone down inside the brothel, with the situation typically unfolding where the partner comes in, claiming she knows her husband is inside. Then, the couple will go outside and have their argument. But, one woman demanded to see the CCTV after she found a ticket from the brothel inside her fiance's pocket. 'Their wedding was just a week away, and she wanted to know if he had really been here. She asked me to show her all the security footage from the day in question, to confirm whether he had visited or not,' Ms Denoire revealed. 'That's simply something I can't do. I can't just let random people into the office and show them our CCTV footage. 'I explained that to them, but the fiancee took it as me covering for him and she said there would be no wedding. 'I tried to suggest that they talk it through, that maybe he really wasn't here but it didn't help. I don't think the wedding ever happened.' She said typically women were angry, sad and felt betrayed after discovering their partner had been to the establishment if they have a monogamous relationship. 'He's shocked and immediately starts apologising, claiming he didn't do anything, that his friends dragged him there, that he was just waiting at the bar, or that he only came for a drink and this was the only place still open,' she said. 'But once, I saw a guy pull a really bold move. His partner found out, waited for him to confront him, and when she did, he flipped the whole situation and got mad at her for stalking him and following him around like some jealous psycho. That was really something else.' She said there are many reasons why men visit a brothel despite being in a happy, monogamous relationship. 'Some men are in happy marriages — they love their wives but the sex is gone. They don't want to pressure their partner into doing something she doesn't want to do, but they also don't want to get involved in an affair as they see that as something more emotionally risky than visiting a professional,' she said. She said some want to explore fantasies they don't feel comfortable exploring with their partner, such as BDSM, because they are ashamed to bring it up at home. She said some men use the brothel as therapy, just wanting to vent about their problems. 'And then there are men for whom this is simply part of their lifestyle. Even if everything is 'okay' at home, they still want to feel like champions — like they're wanted and desired,' she said. 'So the question of whether it's cheating, I always answer: I don't know. I have no idea what goes on behind closed doors in their relationship, what kind of boundaries or agreements they have. 'I don't want to automatically assume that every man with a wedding ring is cheating and a jerk because some couples do have open relationships and are perfectly happy that way.'

Man sentenced for lighting own unit on fire out of frustration at noisy neighbours
A Canberra man who tried to claim he was acting in self-defence when he set his own unit on fire, because he was frustrated after years of loud music from his neighbour, has been sentenced for arson in the ACT Supreme Court. Steven Kazmar-Hall, 39, was found guilty of arson after he set the fire in April last year. The court heard he had run up the street afterwards to escape the fire. The court rejected his self-defence argument that he had set the fire out of frustration because of mental health effects from noise he had endured for three years. Acting Justice Rebecca Christensen said in her judgement, the fire left the home uninhabitable, although it did not spread beyond his unit. The evidence presented in the trial included photographs of the "sizeable sound system" that was used by the neighbour in his unit. Acting Justice Christensen said it was a serious offence that put other vulnerable residents at risk. "Not only was their safety, and their lives, put at risk, but a number of tenants seemingly experienced significant distress from the fire," Acting Justice Christensen said. "The offender himself at the trial described that there were people 'screaming' after his conduct." But Acting Justice Christensen said Kazmar-Hall's culpability was reduced. "This would lead to significant distress and frustration for anyone, let alone a person suffering the mental health challenges of the offender." But Acting Justice Christensen said it was still serious offending. Kazmar-Hall has been in custody since the fire. He was sentenced to eight months in jail, but was freed after the sentencing because he had already served his time.

Prosecutors call for PSG's Achraf Hakimi to face rape trial
French prosecutors on Friday called for Paris Saint-Germain star Achraf Hakimi to face trial for the alleged rape of a woman in 2023 which the Moroccan international denies. The Nanterre prosecutor's office told AFP that they had requested that the investigating judge refer the rape charge to a criminal court. "It is now up to the investigating magistrate to make a decision within the framework of his order," the prosecutor's office told AFP in a statement. Hakimi, 26, played a major role in PSG's run to their first Champions League title, the full-back scoring the opener in the 5-0 rout of Inter Milan in the final in May. Hakimi, who helped Morocco to their historic charge to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, was charged in March, 2023 with raping a 24-year-old woman. Hakimi allegedly paid for his accuser to travel to his home on February 25, 2023, in the Paris suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt while his wife and children were away on holiday. He denies the accusations. In Qatar, Hakimi was a cornerstone of the Morocco team that became the first African or Arab nation to reach the semi-finals of a World Cup.
